I’m visiting an Aldi store for the first time ever on Monday - any recommendations as to what to buy - good, wine etc. Thanks

Some of us don't have a Lidl anywhere near. My nearest is 29 miles away.

You’ll be like Alice in Wonderland! But whatever you do - don’t buy the gravy granules! So far they’re the only thing in Aldi that we haven’t liked. Have fun ?

Magnum dishwasher tabs and washing up liquid.
Lacura nourishing hand cream - the best I have ever used. Caviar face products.
Bakery items. Asti. Chocolate.
Household electrical are good value and the ones that I have bought have 3 year guarantees.

We will have to differ there Narrowboatnan I much prefer their Quixco to Bisto.

All baking items are much cheaper but, unfortunately, they no longer sell block margarine. Cleaning products are as good as any others I have bought and much cheaper. Canned, chilled and frozen foods are all good quality. Fruit and vegetables don’t last so long though.
I always go to Aldi first and then to Tesco if Aldi don’t have everything I want.

I like the cold meats and the prices are reasonable. We do quite a lot of our shopping on Aldi.

Ice cream and ice lollies. Their soft drinks are fairly good too . Wouldn't buy a lot else from there. A lot of their food seems quite tasteless. Their bleach is fairly good and toilet rolls not bad

Pat1949 Sun 16-Jun-19 15:52:33

I found their fruit and veg don't last long.

Rosina Sun 16-Jun-19 15:54:17

Fruit and veg is lovely and soooo cheap! I like the mango chunks - they re delicious and always soft and nice to eat, not as I sometimes find with Waitrose when I feel as if I am eating raw turnips.

I am a new convert; popped in for the first visit to get some milk that I had forgotten on the way home one day and bought two packs of 'bake them yourself' rolls, the milk, and the mango, bought a really nice hessian shopper priced at £1.00 as I didn't have anything to carry the stuff home in, and the bill was under £4.!!

Is this an Aldi sponsored discussion ? Just asking.

Bijou Sun 16-Jun-19 15:59:04

I am restricted to Lidl and Sainsburys for my weekly shop. Both small shops. Almost all is bought in Lidl only that which is unobtainable there i have to get in Sainsburys. Lidl veg is sourced locally whereas Sainsburys from abroad. Lidl sell only British bacon, Sainsbury Danish and Dutch. Got Lidl gravy granules and they have less additives than Bisto as well as being cheaper. Lidl washing liquid is the best.

luxury passion fruit yoghurt - 99p, you get at least 3 portions out of it.

Coconut water - £1.59

KatyK Sun 16-Jun-19 15:59:13

We buy their ground coffee. It's about £1.10 per pack and is lovely.

When we lived in England I preferred Aldi to Lidl but maybe that was because we had to drive to the next town for Lidl. When we come back to England we usually do most if the shopping to take back with us in Aldi. Last summer their swede were 29p each for a larger one than those at 70p in Sainsburys nearby. The gammon joints are very good too. Two if the things we cant buy in Portugal. Here in Portugal I prefer Lidl to Aldi although there arent as many Aldi stores here. Their fruit and veg are excellent and the best shop to buy potatoes here in Portugal. Obviously the shops here cater for the Portuguese so we cant get the fish dishes mentioned by previous posters . We have just been shopping and I bought a couple of packs of the Dulano ham plus they have had a Greek and Italian week so was able to buy Greek style large wraps plus parmesan cheese and marscapone for half the price of any other supermarket

Pat1949 Sun 16-Jun-19 16:24:25

Rosina I sometimes wonder if it depends on where you live as to how fresh the fruit and veg is and how long it lasts. I've occasionally looked on mumsnet and see that people love their greens.

KatyK Sun 16-Jun-19 16:25:45

I've never had a problem with their fruit and veg not lasting.

My daughter loves Aldi but I don't like their meat, beef is always tough or shrivels away to nothing if slow cooked in stews etc. Like their bread range and brioche etc, fruit is okay but a bit limited in choice. Tinned items are like those you get if you buy a hamper, tinned tomatoes are great for spaghetti sauces. But to be honest I have found our local Tesco is just as cheap and the meat is better quality (I usually only buy meat if it is on the reduced aisle so usually cheaper than similar at Aldi) My daughter loves the Aisle of Weirdness smile Any savings she makes on grocery shopping soon disappear if she is allowed to linger there!

Ellpammar19 Sun 16-Jun-19 17:28:54

Does anyone think that Aldi and Lidl will close if Brexit has a no deal with europe?
I asked an employee in a store as he was stacking tomatoes, hw laughed and said
'Not a chance, with all the customets and profit
here

Ellpammar19 Sun 16-Jun-19 17:29:51

Oops, excuse spelling mistakes

nannypiano Sun 16-Jun-19 17:48:19

I have shopped in Aldi for several years, so imagine my delight when they built a new one just under a mile away. I tend to use the other big supermarkets as corner shops, for the things Aldi don't stock. I just love Aldi.

mosaicwarts Sun 16-Jun-19 17:55:31

I had to go today after all your recommendations! I bought sliced beef, salad, floor wipes and nearly got my son a pair of jogging pants!

Caro57 Sun 16-Jun-19 19:09:34

Restrain yourself! I go with a list of ‘needs’ and invariably come out with a good few ‘wants’! Very good fruit and veg and DH will only eat their whole meal bloomer - enjoy your trip

Aldi' s chocolate bars, Moser Roth. Particularly the Peruvian & the Mint. They come in 5 individually wrapped bars. I have 2 each night so a packet is always on the go.

bikergran Sun 16-Jun-19 19:36:00
