I was 46. My son was in the army, came home on leave and asked, 'Would you like to go see your grand-daughter tomorrow?'
That was the first I knew of Hannah's birth, though I had known about my son's 3 year relationship with his girl-friend, though I'd never met her as they both lived 550 km away.
I was so excited, I said, 'Can I tell people?' And spent the next half hour joyfully jumping up and down and telling all my friends I was a grandma.
My son went back to camp and Hannah's mother came to me and I took care of the baby whilst she went to Tauranga to tell her own mother she'd had a baby.
From then on, Hannah spent a lot of time with me as Mum very much wanted to go back to uni to complete her degree.
Hannah is 26 now and we are still very close. She lives and works in London; thank goodness for Facebook.
