Today I found an ANKH in a drawer ..remember them ? This one was made of Siamese silver which was really fashionable when I was in my mid teens .I think it was a gift from a boyfriend ...I haven't come across it for decades . I dont think I've seen Siamese silver since 1972. It just appeared out of nowhere.Do you have anything that isn't seen nowadays ?
Having to walk to the shop with 2 x one gallon cans to have them filled with paraffin for the heater. They were very heavy and the handles cut into your fingers on the walk back.
Oh yes, tooth rot spangles, loved them. Another tooth rot lovely thing was rosehip syrup. Mum put it in my dinky. I think that’s what it was called. A mini baby bottle. Loved all those, hated the filling.
Prams outside shops White dog shit Old ladies wearing those little transparent plastic rain hats/scarves Yes to long rope skipping. That was such fun and good exercise. There were some amazingly complex rhymes and moves.
My bf gave me a St Christopher medallion to wear to protect me when I rode on the back of his motorbike. It worked! I lost it sadly but i wonder what happened to him.....
Siamese silver is often called niello ware. It is still available , mostly online. I bought myself some niello earring a couple of years ago. They are decorated with images of the lightning goddess as lots were in the 60s /70s. I've just googled niello and a huge amount of jewellery is still available , you might even find an ankh!
Before I get inundated with comments, I know Wayfair market the style of bean slicer that I described BUT it's plastic, something that I try to avoid buying, and I doubt it would last anywhere near as long as Mums! Just can't get the quality these days.
There you go! Something else from the past that we don't see these days.......QUALITY!!!
My Mum had a runner bean slicer. It had a little hopper in the top, a sucker on the bottom to secure to a work surface and you turned a handle on the side. Whole beans were put into the hopper and came out of the machine sliced perfectly. Can't find one now, only those that look like veggie peeler which are worse than useless!
All our homegrown runner beans are therefore sliced by hand!
