Do You Act Responsibly?

A recent article in my favourite UK mag. (The Oldie) tells me that "assaults by pensioners on people who have told them to act 'responsibly' have reached a peak.
Britain could be engulfed in a tsunami of ominous predictions.before the end of the 2030s, leading to a dangerous increase in levels of anxiety.
Experts at the Institute of Possible Outcomes estimate that 81% of today's primary school children will, in 20 years' time be employed in some form of foreboding activity.
Apparently. there are calls for the Govt. to appoint a Minister for Nonchalance to introduce measures to lower awareness. and limit the number of predictions issued.

Isn't that shocking!? What is the country coming to!?
Drink up and "drink responsibly"

rufus did you see the advert for short breaks with 'Matron' - a strict disciplinarian?
Jane The "Oldie" Jan '20 arrived today so I visited "Matron's website! shock Not the sort of genteel retirement home suitable for retired teachers and clergy that I had in mind! Wow! Our indoor temp is around 30C at 11.00 p.m. thanks to Mother Nature, so we don't need a further boost, just yet!
But thanks! we'.ll keep it on file for a rainy day, whatever they are. hmm

Jane My latest copy is the December issue, but I can't find that ad. Perhaps you've got a Christmas special or even Jan '20; we're 3 to 4 weeks behind you!
Three other entries caught my eye whilst searching; page 13, "Wholesome and Tasty Meals delivered, for "just £1.99 a meal" How about that?
Page 12 "Cardigan-huggers" Useful pot-stirring stuff! grin
Page 108 Ad. re: "Beautiful, Busty, Mature Blonde" hmm "Oldie caters for all mature tastes, by the look of it!
Better find that "Matron ad. quick smart!
I'm trying to copy/paste other articles with my new printer, but it's taking time.

I devour the 'Oldie' on the day it arrives
Jane Same here! It's nice to know we share the same good tastes! I even read the ads for "retirement accom." for the elderly hmm
Should I return (heaven forbid!) to the UK and decide to live in one of these very enticing places, who could I expect to find as my neighbours?
As I imagine their prices wouldn't attract "riff-raff," as Basil would say' would they all be retired public servants or school teachers on super superannuation packages?
Changed my mind; it's still a good read though! grin
Happy New Year.

I think you're a bit tchconfused. Too much Christmas tipple?
Callistemon That's not fair! How did you know that? You can't smell my breath or see me staggering up the garden path and now all of GN knows! sad
But as you should know, too much is never enough! hmm
For a moment I thought I was to be the Prince (Charming?) you are looking for, but a lady of your immaculate taste wouldn't want to be seen dead walking out with a drunk, even though you do have Aussie connections
So, I"ll do a crash teetotal course in case you're waiting to pounce on Feb 14. that's another New Year resolution,to keep?
Btw. doesn't Mrs J. say "yes, yes, yes, yes, No.?
OoRoo "No more wine

BradfordLass the Oldie Magazine is most definitely a British publication and I'm not sure Americans would 'get' the humour.

Callistemon Thu 26-Dec-19 14:39:53

Rufus I think you're a bit tchconfused. Too much Christmas tipple?

Jim from Vicar of Dibley famously said 'No, no, no, no, Yes!'

'Yeah but no but yeah' was a classic of Vicky Pollard of Little Britain fame (it was broadcast in Australia too). It has to be pronounced with a Bristol accent of course.

Rufus2 Thu 26-Dec-19 14:10:37

Or is it April Fools’ Day already ?
Maw don't rush it! "Your Day Will Come" too. grin
Ate you and Ladymuck family?
I've got to get past Valentine's Day and Leap Day yet! confused

Buffybee Thu 26-Dec-19 12:04:33

Our Day will come was originally sang by Ruby and The Romantics (1962), had to find it on You tube music.
Amy Winehouse made the much better version. What a loss to music this young girl was. I still play her amazing Back to Black CD.

Rufus2 Thu 26-Dec-19 11:49:33

Came across this whilst looking for something else. Isn't it nice? Thought it might come in handy on Feb. 14th, if I can find some lass! blush

Our Day Will Come
Amy Winehouse
Our day will come (our day will come)
And we'll have everything
We'll share the joy (we'll share the joy)
Falling in love can bring
No one can tell me that I'm too young to know (young to know)
I love you so (love you so)
And you love me
Our day will come (our day will come)
If we just wait a while
No tears for us (no tears for us)
Think love and wear a smile
Our dreams have magic because we'll always stay in love this way
Our day will come (our day will come, our day will come)
Our dreams have magic because we'll always stay in love this way
Our day…

I have been "responsible" all my life - if something went wrong I was responsible!

Jane10 Thu 26-Dec-19 07:59:36

Bradfordlass the article referred to is a spoof one really taking the mick out of our current attitudes. It's not serious6

Rufus2 Thu 26-Dec-19 07:56:47

Whatever you are on Rufus, I expect a few here woukd like what you are having.
Maw; Are you sure? What have you got in mind? I was on Warfarin, but now on a new blood thinner called "Eliquis". Not sure of the contraindications yet, but maybe it enhances one's sense of humour. The "few" should try it sometime; only available on a doctor's prescription.! grin

leading to a dangerous increase in levels of anxiety

Ye gods! If people in the UK become even more anxious about trivial things, the whole of the UK is going to be confined in Homes for the Bewildered and Discomposed!

Are there no stoics left?
Where's the battling British Spirit of Determination?

Every time I log on here I see another complaint (or 4) about things which my parents and grandparents would have regarded as 'just life' and coped with sans comment.

I blame the American media for exporting their puerile predilection for airing personal issues in public.

I often feel the wind from my maternal ancestors whirlring in their graves.

Stiff upper lip UK, keep calm, quiet and soldier on!!

I wish everyone could read the article Rufus alluded to. It was very funny and clever.

Jane10 Wed 25-Dec-19 08:53:32

Rufus I devour the 'Oldie' on the day it arrives. Takes hours to read and every word is interesting and frequently funny. The cartoons are good too. I'm so glad I impulse bought it one day last year.

Resurgam123 Wed 25-Dec-19 08:14:38

My "problem" is my "fat finger" typing.

Resurgam123 Wed 25-Dec-19 08:10:56

We ought to be worrying about the climate proplem.

Rufus2 Wed 25-Dec-19 06:45:10

Perhaps the prediction is more accurate than we think
Does that mean that some women (and men hmm]) actually eat their lipstick? These warnings must be concocted by Public Servants with a sense of humour, otherwise what hope is there for womankind and for that matter mankind! confused
Cheers Have a relaxing Day regardless smile

threexnanny Tue 24-Dec-19 16:37:38

Another 'Oldie' reader here, and yes I read that article too. Having just seen a warning notice online ' lipstick is not a food ' !!! Perhaps the prediction is more accurate than we think.

Rufus2 Tue 24-Dec-19 12:09:14

I'm another 'Oldie' reader and fan
Jane; Hi! It's a marvellous mag. and worth every cent. Our copy takes a month to arrive, but that's not a problem as it never dates. I never discard them; copies can be found every where, in and under armchairs etc.and I re-read them regularly. A clever one by Matthew Norman was (is) " Women are best at everything, except..." in front of me right now! tchgrin
You possibly agreed, depends!, but some of our Grannies took it seriously and went on the attack when I copied some of it here. An ideal holiday companion! wink
Merry Christmas. OoRoo wine wine wine

Yehbutnobut What's that you're binning? Not my message, I hope. Apart from your name reminding me of Jim, (Vicar of Dibley), you appear to be in the wrong thread; or not!?tchhmm
Anyway, Merry Christmas! . wine wine wine
