When I was 14 my Dad sat me behind the wheel of Mum's Morris Minor and taught me the basics, including double-declutching (as lizzypopbottle mentioned above, they weren't synchro meshed)

Then Mum got a mustard coloured mini, which was striking enough but it also had a nifty little racing steering wheel and the registration number was HOT, which we all thought was great! I passed my test in that one.

A white fiat that I thought was great I loved it and passed my driving test first time in it .

An exhausted old DAF Marathon 66 with rubber belt drive and a metal bar on the back seat to hit the starter motor when it jammed, which it did often, usually at the top of a multi-storey car park

i took a long time to eventually learn to drive and pass my test. i started with my dad in a hillman minx, then years later with my now ex husband in a proton and then professional lessons in a corsa. my first car was a red fiat panda, didnt like the cold weather and regularly needed a push start but went everywhere in it

I learned to drive in a white, Hillman Avenger,.HGD 26N, was the reg.
DH had bought it just before we married, I loved that car!

He then sold it to his brother and my SIL learned to drive in it, then it was sold on to my BIL. We certainly had our money's worth from it.

1939 Vauxhall 10bought from my Dad in 1962 for £30. (Mum must have part funded) Was Relief Milking for farmers at the time and drove - 45 mph top speed - all over south of England and West Wales for almost a year. This included the great freeze of 1962 - 1963.
6 volt battery so candles for headlights. Life less complicated then.

A second hand mini but learned to drive in a ford escort. I remember my driving instructor was always trying to set me up with his son!

My first very own car was bought for me in 1967 - a little black 4 door Morris minor - it was second hand of course - bought for me by my husband because I was pregnant with our first child and we lived in the country. He drove his yellow mini to and from work, so when I became pregnant and gave up working in the City he felt I needed my own transportation so I could get to the shops etc., So I considered myself very fortunate at that time.......and I have had a car of my own ever since - which has been for the past fifty three years!

My first car was a 1972 Fiat 128, over the years, I've had everything from Rovers to Jeeps! I now have a choice of a Rover 75, an MGF and (the only one currently on the road) a 1969 Rover P6 ?

My 3rd car was a Nissan Cherry turbo which did 0-60 in 6 seconds. How I didn’t kill myself in it do not know. I sold it to someone intending to race it at Silverstone. I’m quite a sedate driver nowadays.

A yellow Hillman Imp....and it's the only one of our many cars whose registration number I still remember fifty years later.

Can’t remember what was my first car but being a young divorced mother in the early 70s it was under £50, that was for sure. However, I do remember learning to driving, during the strikes therefore no street lighting, pitch black in the town centre.

My husband taught me to drive in a Ford Cortina estate as I couldn’t afford driving lessons (I don’t recommend it). I had 6 lessons once I’d booked my test. Failed first time but passed second time in same car.

Can’t remember, it was so long ago, in Cyprus.
Had to take another test once I’d been back in the U.K. for a year. UK didn’t trust Cyprus tests at the time, which didn’t surprise me, since I heard of someone who passed their test despite having driven through a red light! Apparently the examiner just said, ‘Remember next time.’

First car of my own was a 2nd hand dark blue Mini, tiny 850 cc engine. Cost me £150. Well remember it struggling to get up Reigate Hill when I had 3 friends on board.

I have no idea what my instructors car was, I doubt I knew at the timehmm

My first car officially was a blue Metro which I drove for a few weeks before it burst into flames while I was driving itshock. Second was a death trap Mini which had belonged to the son of my friend - must have know about the problems but always just said it was OK when they had it.

Then came what I consider my first love in the car world, a silvery- green Triumph Acclaim. Still miss itblush

A Ford Poplar. Pale blue, had pop out indicators, 3 gears, no heater but I loved that car. It was old when I bought it for £50 in 68.

A Austin A40 took my test and passed in it, with passenger window stuck open, called her Susie (no idea why)

A brand new mini Mayfair, bought by my fiancé.
Lucky me, but I wrote it off four years later.

Timsmum Thu 02-Jan-20 18:21:13

An old ford popular with a wooden floor that had a hole in it near the accelerator pedal and a windscreen wiper that you switched on in the roof area. No signals ,had to do hand signal ,but it started every time.

An MG Midget. Super little thing.

Camelotclub Thu 02-Jan-20 17:46:54

A blue Renault 11, now extinct.

Magrithea Thu 02-Jan-20 17:42:51

Ancient Mini Traveller bought for £50 from a friend of my now DH! I sold it to a patient for the same for his underage son to practice driving on their farm!

Wheniwasyourage Thu 02-Jan-20 17:41:03

Think I might be tempted if someone offered me a Triumph Herald though!

Wheniwasyourage Thu 02-Jan-20 17:39:58

Learnt in a Triumph Herald and first (and last) car of my own was a Simca which leaked brake fluid and developed a hole in the floor... Still, it worked!

All our other cars were needed for DH's work and we never needed more than one at a time. Now I haven't driven for years.
