The DM printed it so it must be true. Not only that, Simon Cowell has been flaunting his slimmer figure on holiday after shedding 20lbs. This is apparently fascinating stuff to the DM readers and can be taken as 100% accurate.

What is pansexual? Layla Moran
(148 Posts)I read today that Layla Moran, my local MP has come out as being pansexual. This has surprised me in as much as I've never heard of pansexual.
According to Layla (amongst other things)
it's all about the person, and that you love that person themselves, not if they're a man or a woman. Being pansexual means being attracted to people regardless of gender - which is different to being bi-sexual.
I've ended up feeling genuinely confused over this. Until now I assumed myself heterosexual, but after reading Layla's news, now I'm questioning myself
Is that true?
About the colds?
Yeah, the readers of papers who print stories about women with bigger breasts getting more colds than women with flat chests and celebs in bikinis (that’s some of today’s offerings from the DM - I just looked to see what the journos there thought was worth printing) really, really care about about voting records of Lib Dem politicians.
What's her voting record?
Surely that's of more interest, especially to her constituents than what she does in private?
But then ... if such a bloomin' fuss could be made over a glass of red wine and a cream or white sofa, then I'm not surprised really.
Just off to pour a glass of
I've never heard the term before but I guess Cynthia Nixon (Sex and the City actress) must be one? She was married to a man and now married to a woman and I remember reading she didn't see herself as a lesbian - she just "fell in love"..... first was a man, second was a woman. I do kind of 'get it'
Maybe she just thought “f*$k it, this is who I am”? I don’t imagine she cares one jot if she goes up, down or sideways in anyone’s estimation as a result of being open and honest - and rightly so. People do find this stuff fascinating for all sorts of reasons, it’s why papers go to the bother of printing the story - people like my MIL for example, who think that gay people are just “attention seeking”. Bizarre.
Elegran I still do not get it. So a reporter finds out and prints it. So what? Who cares?
As far as I know it wasn't a secret, those around her knew. she hasn't tried to hide it or deny it. She represents a major university, young and highly educated constituency. There is unlikely to be another election for 5 years.
I would have held her in higher esteem if she had left this hypothetical reporter to publish 'the facts'. Confirm it as true, if it is and then said 'so what?'.
I stick to my previous opinion I can only suppose she made it to prove how very 'woke' she is and felt the need to virtue signal this to gain congratulations and 'likes' in all the 'right' places. I am glad that someones so self-preening and self-congratulatory is not the MP or candidate in my constituency.
GGGGrrrrr. 'bi' and 'too'....
I've just asked my gay daughter, and she says it's pretty much the same as 'b'i but not used to often by the gay community
someone "pansexual" would be turned on by everyone, not just by selected individuals of various orientations who are attractive to them. If it were literally a true label, they would be going around in a permanent state of arousal
Not at all - just as someone who is heterosexual isn’t in a permanent state of arousal when in the sole company of the opposite sex. What an odd thing to suggest.

An article explaining even more terms
It seems she was getting her version in before some arsehole of a "reporter" outed her in his version. Understandable in the circumstances.
Her sexual orientation (or orientations) don't interest me, so long as they are all consensual and she is not hurting her chosen partner by following her desires.
I do feel it is a pity she uses PAN sexual, though. The implication of PAN is universality - a pandemic is global, affecting everyone in every country, indiscriminately. It doesn't select an individual because they have some quality that makes them attractive to it, it just clobbers anyone who encounters the disease.
A panacea heals everything. PanAmerican flies all over America not just to places that appeal to the chairman. The pancreas, according to an etymological dictionary, derives from words meaning "totally meat" presumably because it was all edible as sweetbreads. (Nanna58 a pancake is cooked in a frying pan)
By analogy, someone "pansexual" would be turned on by everyone, not just by selected individuals of various orientations who are attractive to them. If it were literally a true label, they would be going around in a permanent state of arousal, unless they lived alone on a desert island. For the rare individuals who are cursed with that condition, life is not a jolly existence with no taboos on their sex life, it is a sentence of misery.
I don't think this is a very good or accurate label.
I agree with you, Monica.
I can't understand either why anyone has to make some kind of statement about sexuality.
I think it's weird and attention-seeking.
ha ha sue-its a tough job but someone has to do it.... for the team
Thank you for Googling, Petunia. I feel educated now!
petunia - well said
This lead me to thinking about the English language. So, if I’ve got pansexual right, the stem of the word means ‘all’ , like pan American Airlines, panacea, and panorama, how come I’ve only got one pancreas, and a pancake is only one kind of cake? Funny old language! ( I know, I need to get out more! )
It's highly unlikely I'd ever fancy anyone at all - thank Heavens those days are gone!
I live in a constituency, neighbouring Layla Moran's. Her help in our constituency meant that, with our outstanding candidate, the LibDem vote rose from 9,000 to 27,000 in the 2019 election.
Sadly her recent statement has lowered my opinion of her. Nothing whatsoever to do what she said, I am profoundly uninterested in her, or anyone elses, sexual practices, providing they do not harm anyone.
What has lowered my opinion of her is that she thought succh a statement was necessary. I can only suppose she made it to prove how very 'woke' she is and felt the need to virtue signal this to gain congratulations and 'likes' in all the 'right' places. I am glad that someones so self-preening and self-congratulatory is not the MP or candidate in my constituency.
Our Lib Dem candidate is an environmental scientist who has worked at the highest level on climate change issues, which, I think, went a long way towards increasing his vote and for me was the only issue that mattered.
Being pansexual must solve much of the biological sex vs gender identity debate. Great move on Layla's part as a potential leader. Puts her well ahead of the game.
And, SueDomin I just had to google omnisexual. For those that haven't, where pansexuals don't see gender and therefore gender blind, omnisexuals are attracted to all genders.
Wow, gransnet teaches something new everyday
I wonder what the term is for someone who is deeply drawn to chocolate?
I've now got more of an idea what the word means but admit to still being a tad confused. When I originally read the article I scanned it and wasn't interested who it was talking about because the word pansexual zoomed in on me, and I'm a sucker for clarifying 'new' words.
I think Luckygirl hits the nail on the head when she talks about too many labels.
So much exhibition about people's sexuality seems slightly prurient and slightly flamboyant. I am a heterosexual woman but my sexual tastes and pleasures might be different from those of other heterosexual women – or not. I don't have to validate my sexual self or my body or my actions or my relationships or my attitudes in public – but in my private life, which remains my business.
For goodness sake I thought sex was supposed to be fun! (disclaimer it can also be used for procreational purposes)
Of course jokes are going to be made, but the vast majority of people really don't care what other people are doing as long as it's legal. I think the joking is mostly about the absurdity of having to give every sexual activity a label, and trying to keep up with an ever moving/increasing list. I hope none of the critics are the ones who criticise Johnson for his sexual activity ( disclaimer, I don't like or support him and if he doesn't support the resulting children of his various unions he is an arsehole of the highest order) assuming they were all consensual. How many people watch films which seem to depict graphic sexual content, does that make them voyeurs liable for criticism? Personally I'd rather have sex than watch it, but each to their own.
