Special Gifts

As a child at home and at Sunday School I was taught that everyone has a special gift and it would eventually show up in your life. I'm still waiting for mine - has anyone got a special gift they can tell us about. I dont mean family/children but a characteristic or skill of your own.

To the ones who say.... I haven't got a gift.

You have a special gift of motherhood or fatherhood! A great parent that inspires their children, is special.

Organizational skills, or running a household is a great skill in of itself.

Can cook something from nothing, people say .... Omg you should their roasties, or upside cake or whatever. Or I've never known anyone that can make a fishfinger sandwich taste amazing.

Can you sew and fix ... Great skill

See, the trouble is, people want an AMAZING skill, when sometimes your gift is being you, and all you do that goes unnoticed by most.

Things you do with your eyes shut, and never think about, but we're never "taught", that's a skill/gift.

The gift of kindness, is an amazing gift, and so rare these days.

Please don't be hard on yourselves for not having this "special" gift, cos you have it already.

I'm not sure what my special gift is.
I love quizzing and can often guess the right answer which can irritate others but it's not exceptional.
My grandma said that I could be relied upon to see the funny side of things - a gift which has been sorely tested over the last decade.

Some people think I should develop the second part of your talent Peardrop50 grin
I already have the first.

MissAdventure Mon 10-Feb-20 15:43:39

I can touch my nose with my tongue.
That's it. That's all.

Conni7 Mon 10-Feb-20 15:34:43

I don't think I'm good at anything, so I must be very modest!

Peardrop50 Mon 10-Feb-20 15:30:15

Wow Theoddbird, your piece is amazing.
My 'thing' seems to be organising. I organise everything and everybody, much appreciated by some, absolutely not appreciated by others. More recently I have also developed a talent for knowing when to use my talent and when to shut tfu.

I'm still waiting too. smile

Hand eye coordination . If you throw something to me and even if I am looking in the other direction I will catch it with either hand equally well . I don’t have to look at it or turn my head. I just jut out my hand and the thing is caught . Especially with my right hand as I am left handed. I impress myself with this . My husband tries to catch me out randomly throwing sweets . Catch them every time .

I seem to have a knack for opening screw-top jars which defeat others. It does occasionally come in useful.

Calendargirl Mon 10-Feb-20 14:24:00

Very impressive Theoddbird !?

Lancslass1 Mon 10-Feb-20 14:16:13

I have no special gifts but I was so pleased to be told by both my sons at different times what a great childhood they had had so I must have done something right.

knspol Mon 10-Feb-20 14:11:53

I want what geekesse has!!!

gulligranny Mon 10-Feb-20 14:08:35

I can make people laugh. My 13-year-old grandson says I crack him up, and that's praise enough for me.

Greyjoy1953 Mon 10-Feb-20 14:01:36

My talent according to my family, all generations, is Shepherds/Cottage pie making with either beef or lamb, no-one make it better. Not sure thats much of a talent but at least they all eat well haha

Teetime Mon 10-Feb-20 13:56:10

Thank you for all the responses. It sounds as though many of these gifts involve caring for others which is great.
I spent a long time waiting for my special gift to make itself known. I thought at some stage I would emerge as a concert pianist or an Olympic something or other but no. The only thing I know how to do competently is look after others that was why I was a nurse. I still wish I was good at golf though.

Apparently I make exceptional vegetable soup according to my siblings!

Theoddbird Mon 10-Feb-20 13:30:31

I discovered when in my 40s that I could sculpt. I had always looked longingly at clay when at school but never got to use it. At an art class in my 40s I saw them using clay in the next room... I enrolled the next term. This is something I produced.

I am a musician and my children have inherited the talent. I play and teach piano, violin and viola and feel so blessed to be able to work in the field l love most.

JeannieB44 Mon 10-Feb-20 13:08:11

I would say mine is sewing. It is a skill I have been lucky enough to inherit. My Nan started to teach me when I was 9, I am now in my 60s. Being an odd shape I can make clothes for myself and I make my living altering clothes for others. I feel have been very fortunate.

4allweknow Mon 10-Feb-20 13:04:49

My special talent must be not bothering about not having a special talent!

PernillaVanilla Mon 10-Feb-20 12:54:33

My father could park large cars in tiny spaces - he would sometimes attract an audience. My mother had the uncanny gift of being able to tell exactly how old someone was. I'm still waiting to find out what mine is.

GrandmaJan Mon 10-Feb-20 12:52:20

My son lives in Scotland about 250 miles away from me and he always says on a Sunday all he can think about is my Sunday dinners and how he misses them. He also loves my home made chestnut and apricot stuffing and says it’s the best he’s ever tasted. Not sure if this counts as a special gift. I’m just being a mum really.

Fennel Mon 10-Feb-20 12:47:53

Teetime I believe 100% in that theory of each person having a 'gift'.The hard part is to find out what it is. Then exploit as much as possible. The replies up to now have shown this.
At my advanced age I've been told that I have a gift for cheering people up? Hard to believe but I have to try.
I don't want to be a Pollyanna, but maybe there are worse things.

sodapop Mon 10-Feb-20 12:31:27

Bet I can make chocolate disappear more quickly than you Hert2Hart & Jillybird grin

I'm good at organising and getting people to do things. I can have an event sorted whilst others are still thinking about it. I do wish I had continued to learn piano, I had lessons when I was young but couldn't be bothered to practice. I have always regretted that.
