What do gransnetters think of this

GrauntyHelen Wed 19-Feb-20 21:19:43

Extremely offensive

Hollycat Wed 19-Feb-20 20:13:04

We used to think there was something wrong with us if we walked by a building site or a hole in the road and didn’t get a whistle!

Tangerine Wed 19-Feb-20 19:37:22

Wolfwhistles didn't bother me years ago but I feel times have changed. They aren't acceptable now.

Summerlove Wed 19-Feb-20 19:33:28

I really don't understand why people who find it unpleasant are accused of being humourless, uptight, unconfident, immature etc etc. I just don't see the logic. Whatever else it is, wold-whistling isn't funny, is it? So how is objecting to it linked to having no sense of humour? The same lack of logic applies to the other accusations. They just make no sense to me.

I agree.

Being told that I likely just needed more emotional Intelligence to appreciate it is baffling.

Doodledog Wed 19-Feb-20 19:29:43

Yes, I can see the argument being made, but not the logic.

I have a sense of humour, I like sex, I like laughing. None of that is linked to wolf whistling. Liking or disliking one thing is irrelevant to liking or disliking the rest.

PC, to me, is a media construct designed to mock those who prefer not to use words or behave in ways that upset others. I see it more as 'personal consideration' than 'political correctness'.

Greymar Wed 19-Feb-20 19:19:58

It's because you are not up for a laugh, repressed or PC, apparently

Doodledog Wed 19-Feb-20 19:16:29

I just get fed up with people who try to legislate one way or another.
This is the crux of the matter, though. The only way to legislate about something like this is to legislate against it, as you can't really pass a law saying that it is now compulsory to whistle crudely at female passers by.

So nothing happens, which is all well and good if you are flattered by male attention of this sort, but ignores the point of view of those who are not. Not everyone wants legislation, or to criminalise it. Personally, I think it would be much better if it went the way of smoking in public, and just became socially unacceptable. I think it is going that way anyway - as people have said, younger people of both genders tend to see it as sleazy and a bit neanderthal.

As a teenager I used to get groped by grown men on the way home from.school, shouted at out of vans whilst in my school uniform. It's disgusting

NotSpaghetti Wed 19-Feb-20 19:06:39

Ok, Nancat if all those wolf-whistlers would ask first, maybe that’s the answer? Then only those, like you (presumably) get to “enjoy” it.

NotSpaghetti Wed 19-Feb-20 19:03:00

Like others on here, I hated them. I still hate them.
And they don’t even just come as whistles. They often come with lewd words and sometimes actions.

They were never good for my ego and should certainly not be considered harmless.

dortie145 Wed 19-Feb-20 19:02:51

Who on earth deemed appreciation from the opposite or these days same sex offensive
I loved it then and the tooting cars lol because I was confident to accept it maybe those who think less of themselves found it unacceptable if it happened now I would be over the moon but it would be a brave man who expressed himself

Treebee Wed 19-Feb-20 19:00:55

There was an army base fairly near my home town and sometimes when I was walking home from the school bus a lorry load of army men would pass me. They would shout and cheer and whistle and I wanted the ground to open up.
Made me feel so vulnerable.

Caro57 Wed 19-Feb-20 18:58:21

They are now considered sexual harassment

Damdee Wed 19-Feb-20 17:39:30

I was a tall girl and looked 17 when I was only 12. I used to get very embarrassed if I got whistled at and go bright red in the face. In fact, if I knew I had to walk past somewhere where I was likely to get whistles, I tried to go another way. On the other hand, it never stopped me wearing hot pants!

granmanat Wed 19-Feb-20 17:33:49

Well said Nancat!
The one and only occasion I had a wolf whistle was on the day of my graduation... I was nearly 50, feeling very happy and the wolf whistle as I proceeded alone down the cathedral aisle just made more bashful and thankful.

Lilyflower Wed 19-Feb-20 17:20:59

I used to get wolf whistled at a lot when I was younger and it was mostly good natured and flattering. In fact, I can't remember anything offensive being said. Now, it would be even more of a compliment.

However, I can see that with teenagers being less independent and more sheltered these days they might think it threatening. And, of course, there can be a nasty streak in young men today caused by a variety of reasons from the ubiquity ofporn to an anti feminist backlash.

mrsgreenfingers56 Wed 19-Feb-20 17:05:49

Oh not had one for years, definitely a sign of being older!

crazyH Wed 19-Feb-20 16:59:18

Ealdamodor ????

Nancat Wed 19-Feb-20 16:55:42

It's all subjective isn't it. Like all the PC stuff these days, what some love others hate. I just get fed up with people who try to legislate one way or another. I live and let live, ignore what I dislike and enjoy what I like. I don't expect everyone to fall in with my "likes" but do expect to be allowed to have them without critisism.

Daisymae Wed 19-Feb-20 16:47:20

Totally unacceptable, always designed to intimidate. I never considered it flattering and I am glad that my GDs are not subject to it.

Greymar Wed 19-Feb-20 16:42:54

It has absolutely nothing to do with PC. I don't want some idiot staring at my tits and passing comment? Clear?

JandJ5years Wed 19-Feb-20 16:20:08

Perhaps it depends on your personality? I avoided walking past building sites as I knew I would be wolf whistled. I never ever saw it as a compliment or a bit of fun. I was confident enough in the way I looked , and certainly did not need validating in this way.

Summerlove Wed 19-Feb-20 16:01:23

Everything nowadays has become too PC.

Was everything too politically correct 50/40/30 years ago when it was bothering some of the women here?

Greciangirl Wed 19-Feb-20 15:50:58

If you don’t like it, then ignore it.
If you do, then smile and walk on.

Everything nowadays has become too PC.

optimist Wed 19-Feb-20 15:47:32

Very sexist and offensive. Objectify the recipient.
