What do gransnetters think of this

Shelmiss Wed 19-Feb-20 10:24:38

I hated it. I used to get it quite a lot when living in central London back in the 80s.

But it also happened to me just recently very near my home. I thought I would walk up to meet my friend rather than drive. I’d never actually walked up this (main) road before, and I won’t again. A guy going into a newsagent looked me up and down as I approached, and when I walked past the entrance he made a very lewd remark to me.

On the way back I walked on the opposite side of the road. This time someone shouted something out of his car window.

I had a jumper and thick coat on with trousers. I couldn’t believe how it made me feel, so close to my home, I honestly couldn’t see what had made them do that other than I was a woman.

And FFS I’m 57!!!!

But you don't express an opinion Jennifer, you express it as fact.

I found it uncomfortable.

How can somebody on a building site decide whether or not the person is a school girl?

Larraine1 Wed 19-Feb-20 10:20:35

I don't mind if I am walking with someone but don't like it if I am walking on my own feel embarrassed. Or end up tripping up.

Sorry to the 'Just a joke' brigade. I'm one who always found it intimidating. Not at all the same as a man being friendly or complimentary to me as an individual. Something 'pack of wolves' about it.

Wolf whistling is offensive. I'd be horrified if it happened to my teenage DGD.

Pudding123 Wed 19-Feb-20 10:17:36

I hated getting wolf whistles,I was very shy and would go out of my way to avoid building sites ,that I had passed previously ,I would blush to the roots of my hair and would find it really embarrassing so I am really pleased they are now considered to be offensive.

Mollygo Wed 19-Feb-20 10:16:29

I certainly regarded wolf whistles as a compliment, though rude comments always were and are still offensive.
Walking down the shopping mall with my beautiful eldest GD, it’s fun to see heads turn, but I guess some folk will find head-turning offensive too.

Groups of builders wolf whistling at a young woman in the street is a different phenomenon to paedophiles lurking either in public or online.

It's often bravado and showing off to their mates, and probably rather immature. It makes others uncomfortable but in all probability is not sinister.

I don't think that paedophiles would do this, it would draw attention to themselves.

Galaxy Wed 19-Feb-20 10:06:33

They would run a mile.

Baggs Wed 19-Feb-20 10:05:40

What if they are wanting to have sex with you? Is that a crime? Or is it just the intimation that's the 'crime' (by which I mean offence rather than actual crime)?

These sorts of threads seem to divide people into "offendeds", "shruggers" (couldn't care lessers), and "enjoyers" (of the supposed compliment).

JenniferEccles Wed 19-Feb-20 10:05:16

Greymar You asked who I am to say I think the complaints are a fuss about nothing.

Well I guess I am like everyone on here in that I am expressing my opinion .

I was speaking from a personal perspective of when I was in my late teens and twenties when I found it flattering.

Others though have said it made them feel uncomfortable.

I do agree though that it’s a different matter where schoolgirls are concerned.

Grandad, the world is a different place as you point out, than when you (and I) were young. Are you saying you find adult men harassing, sexualising girls of 12 and 13, walking with their father, is perfectly acceptable?

Greymar Wed 19-Feb-20 09:55:20

ticking, yes they do. If someone says 'I like the attention', OK great. But don't tell me it's all lot of fuss about nothing because that was not my experience.

Grandad1943 Wed 19-Feb-20 09:48:17

Callistemon, there was a considerable period of time in the sixties when flared miniskirts were very prevalent but tights were yet to come onto the scene.

I and my mates very much enjoyed that period of time. I got to first recognise my wife by looking at her mini skirt and stocking clad (or unclad) legs whichever way I cared to look at it. ??

Great Days. Really must get on with some work now.

Galaxy Wed 19-Feb-20 09:48:07

I am confused tickingbird are you in favour of grooming of children online as that is what I was talking about being opposed to.

Oldbutstilluseful Wed 19-Feb-20 09:47:19

Wolf whistles, I could take them or leave them. What I really disliked was the ‘joke’ glueing down of loose coins opposite construction sites. I really hope this has died out.

tickingbird Wed 19-Feb-20 09:46:25

Greymar 09:19

Yes you absolutely do have a right to your feelings but others have as much right to theirs!

tickingbird Wed 19-Feb-20 09:44:34

Its possibly to be opposed to both. It doesnt take a lot of effort.

It’s true that a certain type of person finds it takes no effort at all to be opposed to many things; it comes easily to them.

Galaxy Wed 19-Feb-20 09:39:42

Its possibly to be opposed to both. It doesnt take a lot of effort.

Grandad1943 Wed 19-Feb-20 09:38:46

Yes, we now in this era both men and women grooming children online, is that better.

Callistemon Wed 19-Feb-20 09:36:50

As a teenager I found it embarrassing and would probably go bright red and rush on, when older I would just ignore them, stick my nose in the air and walk on.
However, it is so long ago my memory could be hazy.

I do dislike it when some men look at my DDs and you can see their eyes travel slowly up and down. I saw one doing this to younger DD when she was waiting for me and I felt a mother's protective instincts rush to the fore. She just laughed and and said she was used to handling "sleazeballs".

Grandad I think miniskirts saw the demise of stockings, tights started to come in then.

Galaxy Wed 19-Feb-20 09:34:32

Yes in a past era when grown men whistled at children.

Galaxy Wed 19-Feb-20 09:34:00

Imagine thinking grown men whistling at 13 year olds is ok.

Grandad1943 Wed 19-Feb-20 09:33:31

For those who are getting all upset by the past thoughts of Wolf Whistles, it took place back in a different era that held different attitudes and values in both men and women.

The world has moved on, so, get over it.
