Australia struggles to attract hotel workers doing such jobs as cleaners, room attendants, laundry room staff. The unemployed are often drafted into this type of work, but don’t want to do it and don’t stick it for long.
Foreign students and agency workers are frequently employed for these jobs.

Nearly all the children of the ageing staff are training as doctors or dentists. Local white yoofs won’t work the hours.

The work permit and cost towards the NHS is already affecting recruitment of teachers. The UK already has a chronic shortage in some subjects.

No it doesn't newnanny. If people in work are claiming Universal Credit, their benefits will decrease as minimum wage increases. The majority of people who benefit from the increase in minimum wage are second wage earners working part-time, who don't need a full-time job because their partner earns enough for the household. Not only that, but one in seven workers is self-employed. If they are claiming means-tested benefits, they actually lose money when the minimum wage increases. For some, it could mean that trying to earn any money isn't worth it.

@growstuff the link is if workers were able to come to UK and only have low earnings they would not be able to afford to live as would not be able to claim Universal Credit including housing benefit for 5 years. That is why we need to have an earnings lower limit. In addition to paying NIC new immigrants are also going to have to pay a work permit of £1200 and £400 annually towards NHS. This is because they have no history of paying into NHS. Also goverment will not pay child benefit for children living in other countries any more.

The minimum wage is supposed to be going up in April by 50p and I thought then by another 50p each year until it reaches £10.50 per hour. I thought that was said in run up to election by Boris. If minimum wage goes up and benefits don't go up as much there will be more differential between working and claiming benefits. That might encourage more into work. I saw a benefits programme on TV and they said for every hour a person on Universal Credit works they lose 60p off their benefit. Some on Universal Credit might think it is not worth working if only gaining 40p in pound.

It must be reassuring for car workers in Sunderland to know that there are plenty of jobs picking cabbages in Lincolnshire, if they are made redundant. If they don't fancy that, they could always try care work.

newnanny I don't understand the connection between an earnings limit and not being able to claim benefits. New immigrants have to pay towards the NHS anyway.

I don't have a problem with our new points based system. There are going to be exceptions for agricultural workers and the earnings limit can be lowered to about £20k for workers in shortage areas. There has to be an earnings limit though because new immigrants will not be able to claim benefits for the first five years they are here,and they will also have to pay £400 towards NHS.

It’s about time employers here in the U.K. started to invest in our own young people and offer apprenticeships again, instead of taking (to them) the easy option of bringing in ready qualified staff from abroad.

There seems to be a very skewed view of value in relation to the workforce, ie all the coalface 'unskilled' jobs seen as valueless, whereas uni/grammar school education, professional career all seen as high value/status. Possibly the roots buried away somewhere in the class system.

GG, I too had the work ethic firmly rammed home as did my husband. We both worked hard. Our children picked up jobs here and there.Not everybody has a decent home, a good attitude, confidence, back up at home,appropriate clothes and even the bus fare to get to the job interview! We cannot dismiss people as solely unmotivated. Money, power, confidence all linked
