Panic buying

I was reading in Saturday’s Daily Telegraph that Bryony Gordon, one of their most popular columnists, had taken delivery of nearly 100 toilet rolls from Ocado, (three people living in their home, two adults, one child). Later, she stopped off at supermarket to buy more loo rolls.
The article was written in a humorous vein, but not really the best message to be putting out at the moment.
Certainly think the supermarkets are at fault if they don’t put some sort of limit on this type of blatant stockpiling.

Absolutely agree with gillybob..low income families cannot afford to stock up....I also think it's a ploy by the media to get people spending more....

The other day someone had left a massively long receipt in my supermarket trolley, so I picked it up and had a nose.
£297! Just over.
Didn’t occur to me then that it could be a case of stockpiling, but now...
(It was Waitrose, but even so...).

I understood that antibacterial gel is useless against corona because, as the name suggests, it is a Virus, not a Bacteria!

Looking back at the weather last month, I don’t somehow think we’re going to have problems with the water supply ......

I believe we have more to fear from selfish people stockpiling food than we do from the virus itself.

As an additional thought I can’t help wondering how many people in this country and worldwide are currently suffering from flu?

It’s probably a few hundred thousand in this country alone yet we all get on with our lives well aware that the person behind us in the supermarket queue, or someone at the next table in a cafe could well be incubating flu.

Despite that fact I am sure there could be widespread panic if the Coronavirus infects just a thousand here.

I do understand that those who are in a high risk group would be worried, but they are equally at risk from flu, yet probably are still out and about in winter when flu is all around us.

We have needed it in the past we had pipe issues on a road we lived on before

panic buying is ridiculous scare-mongering, on the other hand having a good two weeks supply of food and essentials is just old fashioned good housekeeping. I think the panic buyers are those who do not practise good housekeeping. Many of us have enough flour etc we can make our own bread. Maybe just a few extra toilet rolls and a bit extra soap, just in case but nothing else

I have, as always, plentiful supplies of coffee, gin, wine and the spaniels biscuits, sorted?

What sort of things count as essentials? I'm interested to know what people store.

I bulk buy pet food, vinegar and loo roll anyway, tend to store tins of chickpeas, beans and lentils, have a good supply of bread, biscuit and cake making stuff, olive oil, passata, pasta, oatley milk, nooch, tea and coffee. There's a sack of potatoes, many carrots and onions in the garage, greens in the garden - what else could I possibly 'need' for a couple of weeks?

Unless you ve got a lot of money and a huge space at best it would last a few weeks if I can’t get potatoes I ll use swede if I can’t get bread I ll use biscuits if I can’t get biscuits I ll cook done flatbread with flour and water there’s always something

Our cupboard was fairly bare so I went to Sainsbury's this morning. There were no shortages as far as I could see, except perhaps for customers.

While I was waiting at the check-out, I heard a gentleman of mature years reflect: 'If your number's on a bomb, you'll cop it anyway.' The younger lady at the till admitted that she was unaware of the expression.

We’ve stocked up on a few things a week or two earlier than we otherwise might have, ie rice, chickpeas, diced tomatoes. I do need to go to a different store for flour for my bread machine. My next coffee order is set to arrive on the 17th, and as always loads of alcohol already in house.

Otherwise, we are just trying to live as normal. Perhaps washing hands a little more often.

This is real first world angst isn't it?

I've just seen on the news the refugees on the border of Turkey and Greece, with little children, freezing cold and with no food and nowhere to go.

We in the UK are much safer in comparison, so am trying to keep a sense of proportion over the Covid virus.

Just been to our local garden centre and stocked up on potting compost so that we can keep busy if self isolating!

Artdecogran I have stockpiled baked beans - 6 tins were cheaper than 4 tins so I bought 6.
We now have 5 tins stockpiled as we ate one today for lunch!

lemongrove do you think that being stuck indoors would make you notice the cobwebs, the kitchen cupboards that need turning out etc etc instead of noting these things in passing on the way out and resolving to get around to them mañana?

Blast it !
I did my cobwebs and kitchen cupboards last week, I should have saved them just in case .
However, I’ve just spotted some new cobwebs this morning so all is not lost, hopefully ( if I have to shut myself away) the garden will be dry enough to work in too.

Killing several birds with many stones....
