Panic buying

An online supermarket has warned that they are experiencing higher than normal buying levels. Obviously people are panic buying in anticipation of global collapse. I wasn’t going to but if everyone else is stocking up/hoarding then there won’t be much left for me. So now I’m going to hoard food, medicine, toilet rolls, pet food and so on, which will then cause more shortages so you will have to hoard too. The world has gone nuts! ?

This happened when many doom and gloomers predicted we would all starve when the Brexit ref showed we were to leave. My local tv news channel were visiting folk to see what they were buying. I could not believe what one person had stocked up and often wonder if she ever saw the end of her stock of tinned beans in tomato sauce which filled a corner of her spare bed room.

Elegran Mon 02-Mar-20 17:41:32

We've not left yet, Beverley Nothing has changed, so stockpiling a thousand tins of baked beans under the bed was too soon - but who knows what will happen when the final whistle blows?

As I have said I work in well know supermarket....
I have rummaged around in my cupboard for something for tea...ended up with pasta with pesto sauce...so no I deff am not stockpiling.
I did serve a chap today who bought 60 tins(yes 60) of Oxtail soup and lots of hand gel confused

Oopsadaisy and JenniferE
I would have plenty of cobwebs to keep me busy as there seems to be a resident, very large, spider in the conservatory. He (or she) pops out to say hello occasionally then quietly re-does overnight what I have destroyed.

I was in three different shops that sell food today. None had hand gel but otherwise stocks were at usual levels. Dh added to his Coronavirus cache of Creme Eggs by buying three more. I’ll have to starve as I don’t like them. grin

Now that there have been 6 confirmed deaths from coronavirus out of 101 confirmed cases in the U.S. more people are taking it seriously and buying what they will need for a couple of weeks or more-

Lyndiloo Tue 03-Mar-20 01:58:28

Well, I'm stocking up! Yes, it may be stupid, but if we have to stay in, I want to be prepared. (I was a Girl Guide!)

And nothing will go to waste - so why not?

rosecarmel Tue 03-Mar-20 02:39:34

It isn't silly to be practical- But there should be imposed limits on how much people can buy- That sounds like rationing because it is, because sometimes it's necessary in order for there to be enough for everyone- Currently, people that are near the outbreak in Washington are panic buying- Checkout lines looping around the store and empty shelves- Even meat- Some people got a lot, others nothing-

You can follow these stories more closely by reading or listening to the local news stations in that area- King NBC Komo ABC Kiro CBS

Just beentoMorrrison, no rushing round there, in fact the gardening section just opened!!

Couldn't believe that panic buying has started over here! I went to the supermarket to get a couple of items as usual and was surprised to see the toilet paper isle nearly empty, same with the liquid hand soap! I had laughed at the photos of supermarkets in Italy and Australia showing similar but didn't expect it here!

This made me laugh. Two weeks??? There's more than enough there for two years!! grin

BlueSky Wed 04-Mar-20 19:37:32

Good God Merlot! Well today my DH, usually the last person to panic buy, insisted we stocked up on toilet paper and liquid hand soap when we finally came across an out of town supermarket stocking these items! Has anybody ordered any masks yet? They are still available on line and wonder whether we should!

Callistemon Wed 04-Mar-20 19:49:51

merlot Australians have been advised of a list of essentials to stock up on.
The thing is, many rural areas employ a lot of Chinese workers , some of whom may have travelled home for their New Year or have family staying who arrived recently.

Callistemon Wed 04-Mar-20 19:50:51

I think that woman in your link may have taken it all too literally though grin

May7 Wed 04-Mar-20 19:52:37

Well I've been to 7 chemists today for large velcro rollers and none of them have any!!! Eventually got them from a large Boots store. Somebody somewhere knows something I dont and is stockpiling grin

Doodledog Wed 04-Mar-20 20:30:17

I think that if we get to the point where there are real shortages then there will have to be rationing. Until then, though, I don't think it is stupid or selfish for people to buy more than they need if they have the space to keep it all and can afford it.

I was brought up to believe that good housekeeping involved being prepared for emergencies, so have always had things like pasta, lentils, tins and packets of non-perishables in a box, along with bottled water to cook it. I also have candles, a primus stove and things like that to hand - again, in case of (unspecified) emergency.

We often shop at Costco, so buy loo rolls in giant packs anyway, and things like toothpaste comes in boxes of 12. I wouldn't make a special trip because of Coronavirus, but the chances are that we will have overstocks of random items just because we always do grin.

In the event of fire, flood or pestilence we could manage for quite a while without leaving the house at the best of times. We might end up eating unusual combinations of ingredients, but we wouldn't starve.

I bought in extra in case of a hard Brexit, (and as Elegran says, we haven't left yet, so we still don't know how that will play out), so there is more 'stuff' in another box in the spare room.

If necessary, I will get more as and when it becomes clear what might be in short supply. It is what I have always done, and I don't see how it is wrong to do so - as I say, if there are actual shortages, I will be happy to comply with rationing, and in fact I can stop shopping altogether for a while.

If or when I find that I don't think I need packets of soup, and it is clear that vegetables are plentiful, I will go back to making my own, and donate the packs to the food bank.

Hetty58 Wed 04-Mar-20 20:57:50

What's a velcro roller?

May7 Wed 04-Mar-20 21:39:49

Well hetty58 they are sticky curlers that you put in your barnet. I always thought you could buy them at the chemist but it appears they are as unavailable as hand gel

lemongrove Wed 04-Mar-20 21:46:19

It’s daft to start panic buying anything.
My online shopping arrived as usual the other day, and in Sainsbury today for a few items of toiletries, the only half empty shelves were for handwash and bars of soap!
There are going to be some cleaner hands around than normal it seems.

Callistemon Wed 04-Mar-20 21:53:05

Perhaps that woman in Merlots link has bought up the world supply of velcro rollers!

lemongrove Wed 04-Mar-20 21:54:28

Callistemon.....there may be the odd cobweb here and there
But if spotted will soon be zapped.?
With all that self isolating time on my hands I could sort loads of photographs ( currently shoved in a drawer) into a new albumn, clean out all the wardrobes and definitely wash the windows.?
