Dame Cicely Saunders
The modern-day hospice movement came into being in 1967 when she founded St Christopher's House in London.
She has my admiration for her devoted compassion to improve quality of life for the dying

Certainly not Lizzie ,I dont for a minute think she would have done the "job" if all she had got from it was a council house in Glasgow and a minimum wage.... has feathered her own and the nests of all her offspring for decades while children live in poverty .Thats the main reason she hangs on too..she knows when she goes her wee brood might well be out of jobs as a new generation sees them for the parasites they've always been... bring on the republic .
What HAS she done that is so praiseworthy? Isf all old folk were as well treated they would all live to a great age in good health .sadly the already low mortality rate in some parts of the UK is dropping again ,while Lizzie and co prosper

Any woman who puts her family first above everything else. I wish I had done this more.

MissAdventure Fri 06-Mar-20 20:15:23

Nope.
Nobody springs to mind, apart from the mum of someone I support at work.

The Queen

boheminan Fri 06-Mar-20 17:58:23

...bendinghmm!

boheminan Fri 06-Mar-20 17:57:43

....ditto....Mary Beard - for not ending to The Establishment.

trisher Fri 06-Mar-20 17:53:48

Mary Beard for the breadth of her knowledge, her outspokenness, her socialist principles and her ability to ignore abuse.
I'd really object to the Queen, she's never had to deal with real women's issues and she often behaves like a token man.

Mollyplop, tell your mother she has another admirer. She sounds like an unsung heroine.

Lilyflower Fri 06-Mar-20 17:50:38

The Queen who has such a sense of duty and who has worked so hard is truly admirable.

Margaret Thatcher, our first woman PM, was pretty awesome though I know I will be flamed for saying so.

Anyone who is suffering domestic violence

You asked for one woman and my vote also goes to Queen Elizabeth II. Can't think of anyone who has done such devoted duty for so many years with such dignity. Just getting ready to go out all the time must be tiring at her age, never mind all the endless chatting and smiling when I'm sure she would rather be somewhere quiet.

Marie Stopes

Why are publishing opportunities only given to either the young or those who have had work published in the past. I have written plays, short films, short stories and 2 novels. Why does Gransnet not put on competitions for aspiring playwrights, novelists who had NOT been published. I have to have a publishing deal before I shuffle of this mortal coil! Come on Gransnet, let's have some competitions for playwrights, novelists or screenplay writers, and ensure that the entrants have NEVER been published before. I NEED a break!!

None, we all have faults.

Seefah Fri 06-Mar-20 15:59:57

Your post brought tears to my eyes Mollyplop

When my DD was studying the history of the Holocaust, she came across the story of a woman who was sent with her daughter to Bergen-Belsen. Both were put in the line for labour but they saw a neighbour's child unaccompanied in the line for the gas chamber. The woman went across and held his hand, accompanying him to death. The daughter survived the war to tell her story.

I don't know the woman's name but I admire her courage, and that of unsung heroines like her.

From the past, Violette Szabo.
Present, Helen Prejean.
However, surely the ordinary women who cope every day as carer's, in war zones, who struggle against ill-health, poverty, domestic violence, etc deserve the admiration of those in better circumstances?

LovelyLady Fri 06-Mar-20 15:09:55

Nicola Sturgeon

Our Queen. X

Patticake123 Fri 06-Mar-20 13:45:01

I admire so many women but I have difficulty choosing between Marie Stopes who introduced birth control and changing lives for millions of women and Florence Nightingale who introduced nursing to top my long, long list of fabulous women.

Mollyplop Fri 06-Mar-20 13:13:30

My Mum. She is almost 75 and has horribly deformed feet with no toes due to being born with spina bifida. She wears leg irons and yet walks twice a day, volunteers at the hospital twice a week and never gives in or complains. She is an inspiration.

The Duchess of Cambridge. Kate fits into her role so well, she’s a natural with young & old.
