It's easy to panic buy...........

when the supermarket shelves are almost empty!

I have bough extra tea as they were the last two packets, more loo rolls as there were no more on the shelf. Little stock of cat food available, etc

It's difficult to know whether the shelves were about to be refilled or not but they were definitely emptied than normal.

I'm sending dh to Aldi on a wine run later.

Anyone else felt the need to over buy?

Same as Calendargirl here.

I always have a four pint container of skimmed milk in the freezer for if I run short. I never tip any out, just freeze it as it comes. No problems ever, touch wood.

Liz46 Wed 11-Mar-20 10:05:19

I have just googled my milk question. A quarter of the container must be empty to allow for expansion. Full cream milk does not freeze well.

We went to Asda yesterday and the toilet roll shelves were empty, there was no pasta and various other shelves were empty.
I didn't know it was ok to freeze semi skimmed milk until someone said earlier. Do you have to pour some out before you freeze it to allow for expansion?
I have two lunches with friends this week and then I am not socialising any more for the time being. I have already stopped using public transport. I am very much in the at risk group.
We are still going for walks but just not popping into the cafe.

Just in case somebody boards up my windows.

grin grin

Anyone going over the score, being greedy and stockpiling when there is no need deserves to be locked inside their house with their doors and windows boarded up so they can't get back out. Selfish gits!

I couldn’t stockpile even if I wanted to being away from home in Oz right now. When I return, so long as I can acquire milk, eggs, some veggies and smoked salmon I’ll be happy. I don’t eat meat apart occasionally from chicken. I have freezer stuff - not sure what, and a few cans of beans etc. tea & ryvita in lieu of bread. Surviving on store cupboard contents will be good and will mean I can start afresh once we’re back to ‘normal’.

I buy Yorkshire tea from Aldi so thought I'd get another pack just in case. The ones on the shelves were over twice as big as the ones I usually buy. When we got home I said, 'If nothing happens we won't have to go shopping for ages.' DH said, 'What do you mean, IF? I thought this was IT!' grin

HurdyGurdy Tue 10-Mar-20 19:48:50

Won't there come a point, however, where those who feel the need to stockpile, will have - well, stockpiled - and supplies can return to normal for the rest of the population.

Surely once you're stockpiled, you're not going to keep on stockpiling? Or are you?

merlotgran I did a Sainsbury's online order last week and ordered 2 single pints of milk and they emailed me to say it was unavailable. A supermarket being out of milk. I don't usually take substitutes because I had too many bizarre ones but I think I'll have to change that for milk.

kittylester Tue 10-Mar-20 07:15:09

Well, I have to own up to panic buying frozen potato gratins. We were passing the farm shop so I took the opportunity to buy 2 bags. Sorry!

merlotgran Mon 09-Mar-20 23:04:19

Maybe rationing will come in, Gilly. Our shopping habits are unlike a lot of people's because of where we live. Fuel costs have to be factored in but we certainly can't afford to go mad.

gillybob Mon 09-Mar-20 22:26:50

The real problem as I see it, is those who are able to (rich enough) can buy everything they need and a lot more besides. Those who are living on the breadline might struggle to get 2 loo rolls or a few tins of soup because the greedy b*gg*rs who can, have bought it all up.

merlotgran Mon 09-Mar-20 22:18:39

I had a Sainsbury delivery this morning. Thought I'd better give Tesco a rest. grin

I ordered 4 pints of semi-skimmed milk because I freeze it even when there isn't a stocking issue. The delivery driver said they had run out but.....they sent organic semi skimmed instead. grin

Last time we went to Morrison's (2 weeks ago) there was no soup in the cafe so DH wouldn't eat there. We had done our shopping though.
He kept on all the way home, 'fancy not having any soup at all at 12.30!' Chunter chunter.

Callistemon Mon 09-Mar-20 22:06:32

Oh, I don't get to Morrisons often because it's quite a journey.

I thought you might mean Lidl or Aldi with all the 4x4s in the car parks!

gillybob Mon 09-Mar-20 19:13:29

Well the one I was in today was Morrison’s Callistemon . smile

Maybe I should’ve said supermarkets in poorer areas ?

Hetty58 Mon 09-Mar-20 18:25:00

Oldbat1, I hope you have proof and haven't just taken her word for it.

It's so strange how people react to an upcoming crisis. Stock up on loo roll and food, but don't expect the NHS to cope with extra demand, it just can't. Ten years of budget cutbacks can't be reversed in time:

Callistemon Mon 09-Mar-20 18:12:20

Which are the poor people's supermarkets gillybob?

No hand sanitizer in B&M but I didn't look for loo roll.

DillytheGardener Mon 09-Mar-20 15:15:55

I’ve sent a care package to elder son and dil in New Zealand, hand sanitiser, loo roll, disinfectant wipes, paracetamol. Dil has socially isolated herself due to her respiratory issues and pregnancy and none of the above can bought for love nor money there. Makes me anxious for them both, other son in Canada, they have already bulk bought everything they need, DIL2 being a planner type of person she is stocked as apparently being snow bound in the house is common so they need to stock anywhere.
I’ve stocked some things for myself , but not much. More worried about my children and future grandchild than myself!

Oldbat1 Mon 09-Mar-20 15:07:52

Our supermarket shelves have everything’s bar hand sanitizer. We are fortunate in that we have always had a stockedlarder and freezer so could survive for a while. Unfortunately my daughter suffers from mental health issues and lives on universal credit. In their wisdom they have sanctioned her and completely stopped her benefit we have had to pay her rent and send money as she had nothing. God help anyone who is in need. She lives 300miles away. I despair.

gillybob Mon 09-Mar-20 14:51:37

Just been to one of the “poor peoples” supermarkets and they are fully stocked with everything except hand sanitizer. I’m wondering if it’s possibly the well off who are causing these shortages ? After all those on a tight budget can hardly stock up can they ? hmm

Calendargirl Mon 09-Mar-20 14:48:08

Marmight

DD is in Canberra. Haven’t heard if they are still able to wipe their bums!

Yennifer Mon 09-Mar-20 13:56:36

We manufacture loo roll in the UK anyway, we aren't going to run out lol
