Yes my cats 'trained' me so when he licks his lips at me it means he wants food,or at very least cat treats?i have trained him to give a kitty high five.Hes very entertaining, and still sprightly at 13,he loves us to play with his toys with him,and has several favourite catnip mouse toys.He never brings home any real ones though.thank goodness.?

How many pets do you have
(110 Posts)If funds allowed I’d have a houseful. We have three cats and a dog. Real animal lovers here
I`m with H1954 on this one and he even manages to groom himself and no vet fees.
Fish. A pond with 13 fish in. Seven beautiful koi and six pretty goldfish with flowing tails. Pond is quite near the back door and they all line up and remind me to feed them, when I come out of the back door. The pond is netted after a heron visit but the fish don't mind.
We have 2 border collies and 6 cats now plus hens and a goose but have gone through the lists of beasties including a flock of sheep for spinning fleeces. Agree it is very tying and every trip planned is a logistical juggle but couldn't be without the tribe. I work around the difference in seasonal times the hens go to bed as well, different people are available earlier and later in the day, so a 4pm shut in in Winter suits some and 9pm e.g. summer Solstice suits others so it spreads out. I usually take the dogs away with me in the UK but have a fantastic dog walker who loves them, for the rare trips abroad.
It's a balancing act isn't it!!
At the moment 2 cats and 1 dog. We always had 4 cats and 2 dogs in the past but now I am retired I decided money wise I would cut down the numbers. Since we have been married we have had 15 cats and 4 dogs and I still miss them all and all the love they give to you. I would not be able to survive without my animals so when in my dotage I shall get an old rescue cat and we can snuggle up together.
I'd love a small dog but like ninathenana, our cat Monty would probably leave home if we got one. Will wait till Monty heads off to 'Rainbow Bridge' but fingers crossed that wont be for a long time. Just love that grumpy unsociable ball of fluff.
None but the hamster used to visit when the family went on holiday. Fortunately when the last one died it wasn't replaced!
I have one 13 year old blue Burmese cat. She alternates between being as sweet and loving as possible and a right royal pain in the derriere, following me everywhere, nipping ankles, jumping up on worktops where she knows perfectly well that she's not allowed etc. etc. Burmese are VERY demanding!
Strictly speaking I suppose we have just the one at the moment, a corn snake that we bought for our son about thirteen years ago that has somehow migrated here permanently. However, we do 'dog share' with our sons. We bought a rescue dog for our younger son and he lived with us for his first four months or so before gradually moving to our son's home; he's like a child of divorce with two homes as we have him very often when our son works away or is on holiday. We also regularly dog sit for our older son when he and his wife go away. In fact I'm whiling away the the time on GN now as I'm waiting for him to be dropped off. Our two sons are very close and spend a lot of time together so their two (Labrador) dogs just love being in each other's company. When we have them together (which we often do) they're very playful and whichever one leaves first we always feel sad for the other who looks very woeful to see his buddy go.
We have always had pets and I think they are wonderful teaching aids for children. Over the years, in addition to the snake, we've had a dog, six cats, rabbits, gerbils, hamsters, guinea pigs, a bearded dragon, goldfish, koi carp and other pond fish. Our children have mostly been reliable in looking after their pets and as adults three have dogs and one has a cat. I have little doubt that in the future my cat owning child will also get a dog.
A 15 year old cat. Sometimes he gets bored with me and my husband so we invite a friend over who he adores. I can’t imagine life without a cat.
Two sweet Siamese cats, Julius and Ember and an elderly yellow lab, Niamh...my gorgeous darling. We’ll be completely heartbroken when she goes....
A rescue wired haired terrier. A bundle of mad energy. She had been found running the streets& was in a terrible state. Would love more, had 3 dogs at one time, but vets fees& insurance are a fortune. No wonder so many poor animals in shelters.
Too many!
3 chickens 2 cats 2 dogs and abearded dragon
None since my bird died.
Lots! 2 dogs, 3 cats, 1 pot belly/Kune kune pig, 3 goats, 9 ducks, 10 chickens, a tortoise and a rankins dragon. I also foster for our local cat rescue, mainly the oldies, poorly ones or the unneutered males. I have a small cattery blockmin the garden. The most fosters I’ve ever had at one time is 17, although that did include 11 kittens.
I have one dog who has been with me just over 2 years. I love her so much that I don’t think I could ever love another animal as much.
None, now.
Two dogs, Molly who is a rescued Whippet cross and Dotty also rescued and is a Border Terrier. I've only had Dotty for a month but she's settled in so well. My old Border passed away last year aged 12 and I missed her so much, still do.
Purplepixie How lovely to have a cat that lived for 20 years. None of mine have lasted as long.
The first cat we had, acquired when we moved into a house, was an ancient stray. We took him to the vet who said he had a heart murmur and no teeth. We found out that he had one tooth when he bit my husband. We were camping in one room as we were renovating an old wreck and, despite being in London we were able to have a proper fire because we had to burn diseased wood on site. Hughie used to lie in front of the fire, so close that his fur would occasionally get singed when the fire spat. I remember feeling very proud of him because he caught a mouse. We only had him for a year when his kidneys failed. For a long time afterwards we were careful opening the front door in case he got out. That was 40 years ago and I remember him and all the subsequent pets.
IMO all cats are unique so I hope that you will feel ready soon to look for another. There are so many out there that need homes.
We no longer have cats because since we acquired our first dog we have always had a terrier. It was OK bringing a dog into the house with existing cats but I wouldn't do it the other way round. We always have 2 dogs, the others have been sheepdog crosses and once a large elderly teckel ( wire haired dachshund used for hunting here in France) When one dies I always get another dog as a companion for the remaining one.
We've had cats, mice, a hamster, a rat, a rabbit and tropical fish over the years before and after the children arrived. Now we are retired and travel quite a bit we only have a granddog who we look after occasionally. We live opposite a park and when I open the curtains and see people walking their dogs in the wind and rain, I'm not sorry we don't have one.
We have 2 dogs and a puppy 3mths old. 2 spaniels and a cockapoo. Wouldn't get another cockapoo as she's a one person dog, my OHs, and quite agressive. Spaniels are very sweet and loving. Can't have a cat as DD is severely allergic (throat starts swelling) which is why we had the cockapoo. She's not too bad with the spaniels so can still come to stay with DGD as we live a 2hr journey away.
Two dogs, two cats & eight chickens. Yes they are a tie, but would miss them if I didn't have them.
Ours are the garden birds and frogs in the pond.
DH is allergic to cats and dogs, so can’t have any. We did inherit a dog when my FiL died, a lovely old dog, it was so homely coming back from work and having him greet me. Only worked part time and he was ok on his own for half a day.
If I got another it would be a rescue dog. Sometimes I feel our house is a bit sterile without a pet.
