Son’s divorce

It is hard. You develop a relationship with your adult children-in-law and it is difficult when that is broken. And you are bound to worry about GC's adjustment to the new situation. But you will be the rock - the constant - for your GC ,so may need to swallow your upset. So hard I know - both my siblings divorced and my parents found themselves a bit piggy-in-the-middle.

Good luck for the future. It sounds as though the young couple had a lot to deal with. I hope your son's mental health remains stable.

I was really surprised when this happened in my Family last year. I keep in touch with my DiL and we go out together every few months. I feel devastated for them. There is no other person involved but, like your family, they have undergone some personal problems.

I feel a bit selfish as I really miss the family get-togethers where my DiL was included. The six of them always got on so well together and it makes me sad that she is not included. My other son and my daughter still contact her and go out with her on children’s events but it feels like a missing limb.

You don’t sound like a wimp at all nanamar. But a kind caring person, who is devastated that your dS and DIL have decided to divorce, it’s always very sad when your AC part ways, I don’t have any words that could help you I’m afraid, but didn’t want to go past this post,

As others have said most of us as parents would be upset if our children's marriage broke down for all sorts of reason. We still try to shelter them from being hurt like when they were little. Divorce is much more common nowadays as women don't have to stay in unhappy marriages or put up with things in order to survive and this is a good thing. At some point we got to let them go solo and if anything just concentrate on the DGC.

Don’t worry, It’s normal, it was the same for me, 5 years on and we don’t see our SIL,( apart from a Christmas Card) but DD and he are both happy and in new relationships, it gets complicated , but the GCs Have coped, it’s taken a while as they were older, but I think that it’s all settled down.
It was an unhappy time, the last thing they needed was for us to be upset in their presence as well.
I think that it’s taught me to take a step back from their lives, my concern now is for the Grand Children, the adults are old enough and will make their own decisions whatever I feel about it ( as they should)

Hello, please accept that you are going through a bereavement, you haven't lost a person, you have lost a way of life which you came to expect and now it has gone.
My H and I were married for over 60 years when he died last April but both my AC 's marriages are broken.
Family occasions like Christmas and birthdays are a thing of the past, any more siblings for our GC not going to happen, although my D's family was complete.

Accept , if you can, that life is going to be different and go along with it, it will get better.
Kindest best wishes to you.

Personally, I too would be devastated if I was going through all you describe. I am a worrier, and something like this would be on my mind constantly. What has happened would be huge in anyone's life. Some people can be very objective and cope well; others are very emotional and would feel as you do. Sorry, I know that is not much help, but just want you to know that I think many others would be truly devastated too.

I’ve posted recently several times but am asking for input again at the risk of sounding like a wimp. About a month ago, we learned that our DS and DIL have decided to divorce after 5 years of marriage. They’re 40 yrs old and married after knowing each other and living together for about 18 months. They have a wonderful 4 year old. They live about a mile away and we babysit 3-4 times per week while they go to work. They’ve been through a lot - pregnancy was expensive (IVF) and difficult, birth was premature but GS is fine; my son has clinical depression and it’s well-managed now but he was in residential placement for a month three years ago. They bought a house which ended up being too much for them to handle and they sold it. They moved across the country so our DIL could pursue a screenwriting career but she didn’t get far. They moved back here b/c my DH is ill and they needed help as well with housing and childcare. We’ve all been away together many times and get along well. They appear to be determined to make this amicable and our DS will live with us and our GS will go between the two houses. I can’t figure out why I am so devastated. I’ve read things online and books about this and I know other parents have been equally upset by their adult children’s divorces. My DH and I have been married for 50 years and weathered tough times including multiple health crises and an affair (his) and remain in love and committed to each other. We aren’t religious so it’s not about that. I’m not sure if it’s disappointment, loss of what I envisioned for our family, fear, or all of those. I don’t know if I feel more sorry for them or for myself. I do get counseling and my therapist has said that things that affect those who are “within our circle of trust” deeply affect us as well. I’m feeling that my grief is out of proportion for this life event and/or if maybe I just haven’t sufficiently “separated” myself from our DS? Thoughts?
