Lots of people are cleaning like they never have before.

The shops are peaceful.

People are not spluttering in public.

People smile and nod as a greeting (not the grubby grab).

There was a man on tv this morning saying how he had shaved his beard off as it's more hygienic.
OH looked at me and said ^ that goes for women, too^ ??

DanniRae Fri 13-Mar-20 09:01:04

That made me laugh Meryl - Thank you! (It is exactly the sort of thing that Mr R would say) grin

GrannyLaine Fri 13-Mar-20 09:04:20

Oh MerylStreep gringrin
And your response......?

GabriellaG54 Fri 13-Mar-20 09:12:40

Same old (literally and figuratively) GabriellaG54, Marydoll.
Returning on Monday from a virtually unpopulated St Martins (fewer than 100 atm) where I'll have had 3 weeks of idle pursuits.
Sorry to read about your health issues but I'm sure you'll look (and feel) $1m on your DDs wedding day. ?
Take care.

I suppose maybe, just maybe ,there may be some middle way. It's a terrible thing and we are bombarded by news . I would suggest it might be wise to look after our physical and mental health in such challenging times.

I can't find much to be jolly about. My own bugbear is little children and teachers in the strightjacket of the curriculum not having time to spend on social activities such as using cutlery and washing hands. Perhaps this may change?

Alexa Fri 13-Mar-20 09:30:30

Sandelf I agree. I'd like to add these social effects happen in a war between nations when a community spirit arises among defenders. We all know who or what the enemy is and minor concerns seem less important.

GabriellaG54 Fri 13-Mar-20 09:31:42

Thanks so much Urmstongran ??
It's good to be back in the very motherly bosom of GN. Such a comfy place...er...??
Friday 13th, not known for being a very lucky day however, like you, I'm on a break but not seeing much (if any) ?...unlike certain persons who are wallowing in it?????
I believe I return on Monday to a dearth of loo roll, pasta, hand gel and sundry other necessaries.
Oh well! Bread n milk it is then plus squares of newspaper on string.
Such is life...
I'm sure it's up to each of us as to whether to squeeze every last drop of enjoyment from whatever situation life throws our way or to sink into the slough of despond.
I'm firmly in the former camp.
Best wishes from St Martins ⛅ to Málaga.

Meryl S , shaving off the beard is a practical thing to do I approve.

For years now I have said school blazers are unhygienic as the kids can't easily push the sleeves up for hand washing, and the blazers themselves are not the easiest garments to launder.

Alexa Fri 13-Mar-20 09:39:24

Dear Artdecogran, You are understandably anxious about your doctor daughter on the front line. May I just say she is young and young people will mostly get a mild flu-like illness or no symptoms at all and be immune thereafter?

Maybe pregnant women have more effective immune systems as well?

Alexa Fri 13-Mar-20 09:40:26

I wish I could spell Malaga like Gabriella does with accent acute

Greymar Fri 13-Mar-20 09:40:27

I don't think many secondary school kids use the toilet, far less wash their hands. I know of several young people who will not use the school toilets. All day long.

Alexa Fri 13-Mar-20 09:40:47

No,not acute, grave

Alexa Fri 13-Mar-20 09:41:31

No, it was acute after all first impressions are often right goes to show

Alexa Fri 13-Mar-20 09:43:09

And wearing hygienic and comfortable garments will encourage what, Greymar?

Hetty58 Fri 13-Mar-20 09:48:38

I agree with SirChenjin that it's a very serious threat so find it hard to think of happy silver linings. Maybe, just maybe, though, people will think more about what they will vote for in future? Perhaps they'll realise that we desperately need properly funded health and social care services for all - with ring-fenced taxation?

Greymar Fri 13-Mar-20 09:50:46

Is that a lead balloon I see Hetty?

May7 Fri 13-Mar-20 09:56:25

...And here's another silver lining
I got a parking space in the hospital car park just maybe that's because people are now thinking carefully before coming to A&E with minor complaints or less people visiting patients and overwhelming them when they should be resting. Or less people visiting hospitals and bringing in their own kind of germs.
Because in fact the hospitals are not full of Coronavirus patients yet are they?

Mal44 Fri 13-Mar-20 09:59:17

That really made me laugh Eglantine21 and we need to keep a sense of humour amidst all the gloom.

SirChenjin Fri 13-Mar-20 10:08:16

No they are not full of patients yet May - as well as the things you mentioned what you’re also seeing at the moment are things like clinics being cancelled due to staff self isolating, working from home or being relocated to other roles or as a preventative measure to free up capacity elsewhere, training that is required for future professional development being cancelled, that sort of thing. Being able to get a parking not a cause for celebration, it’s a sign that things are starting to take hold and preparations are really kicking in as we try and create as much capacity by flattening the curve.

May7 Fri 13-Mar-20 10:15:57

Sirchenjin I thought you'd bowed out of this Silverlinings thread??

SirChenjin Fri 13-Mar-20 10:21:43

It appears that I’m back. I hope my last post helped to explain the reasons behind the availability of car parking spaces smile

May7 Fri 13-Mar-20 10:28:51

As is your perogative but no it hasn't explained the empty parking spaces to me because outpatients was busy as usual. Many of my family and friends also work in hospitals and have not experienced the measures you have described. The point of this thread was to encourage posters to look for silver linings and you are not doing that
Maybe you should start your own thread?

lemongrove Fri 13-Mar-20 10:29:19

Hiya Gabriella ? (waves) you seem to be enjoying life as usual, welcome back.

You know how they always used to say ( when in social situations) ‘cover a fart with a cough’ ?well, now we should
Cover a cough with a fart.

curvygran950 Fri 13-Mar-20 10:30:35

Don’t bow out SirChenjin, I agree so much with what you are posting. One of my sons is a front line doc in Australia and I’ve been having extremely similar views/comments/advice from him . You are absolutely right in what you are saying, keep it up please .

May7 Fri 13-Mar-20 10:32:47

Funny lemongrove I'll use that one grin
