The silver lining... Plusses from the 'panic'

Lots of people are cleaning like they never have before.

The shops are peaceful.

People are not spluttering in public.

People smile and nod as a greeting (not the grubby grab).

Hi Sandelf just got back from Sainsbury weekly shop, must admit it was a breeze. There was few people shopping and staff looked like many more online shopping taking place. Shelves either empty or not stocked up. Got what we needed for a week and paid and left, best time ever. There was plenty of meat, maybe I should have panicked bought meat.

I can’t comment on your local hospital but ours don’t have separate car parks for outpatients May, not do I know why your family and friends aren’t witnessing what we currently putting in place.

Thanks curvygran smile

That sometimes isn’t difficult Lemongrove ?

pollyperkins Fri 13-Mar-20 10:42:11

I hesitate to say this and will probably be shot down but fewer flights must help the environment too. I am aware people are losing their jobs and holidays and seeing family but we have been talking about the need to cut down flying to help avert the climate crisis.

Lighten up GNs. We’re all in this together. It will all pass and people will go back to their rude, sloppy ways and we will all find something else to grouch about.

I am hoping the airport will be less busy on Sunday as we head off for 3 weeks. I would like to think virus has started to subside on our return.

Chestnut Fri 13-Mar-20 10:45:55

To get back to silver linings, I think it's a silver lining that this virus doesn't kill off all the children. I feel great comfort in the fact that our grandchildren will not suffer.

Same here Farview and Lucca with DC and DGC abroad I can't see any pluses only minuses. sad

Greymar Fri 13-Mar-20 10:57:05

So, let me get this right, a pandemic is sweeping the UK and we are to celebrate because we find a parking space?

Chestnut Fri 13-Mar-20 11:02:26

Nobody is celebrating anything Greymar. You are being a wet blanket on what is supposed to be a more positive thread. Just looking for tiny shafts of sunlight can help raise the spirits.

pollyperkins Fri 13-Mar-20 11:03:01

Greymar at all my grandchildren’s schools (and I have quite a few in different parts of the country ) they are all washing their hand on arrival, before playtime, before and after lunch and before leaving. Under supervision but all seem to be taking it seriously. Even my youngest granddaughter at 18 months has learnt to washer her hands. It’s good that they are getting into the habit.

Greymar Fri 13-Mar-20 11:08:22

That's fantastic, polly.

May7 Fri 13-Mar-20 11:09:14

Greymar I didnt say I was celebratingabout finding a parking space (although I have been known to whoop with joy when I've been driving around in circles for 30 mins ) I said it was a silver lining which is what this thread is about

We were due to be going to Italy next month with my son, daughter in law and 3 little granddaughters to celebrate my 70th birthday with my daughter, her Italian partner and their 2 little girls who live in Northern Italy. This won’t now be happening ? but the silver lining is that the Italian granddaughters keep Skyping me because “we want to see you and make sure you’re alright Graneeee”.

I’m not sure what they would do if I wasn’t, but it’s lovely of
them to be concerned! ?

Lizbethann55 Fri 13-Mar-20 11:22:32

Well said sandelf. It must be doing wonders for the state of our atmosphere and air pollution. Maybe it is natures way of saying "well if you won't do anything to stop climate change, I will!". Of course the downsides outweigh the upsides, but it is never a bad thing to try to look for the good. However, as a confirmed housework hater , I will ge glad to put the Domestos spray back in its rightful place, at the very back of the cupboard!

Brigidsdaughter Fri 13-Mar-20 11:26:23

I'm thinking how much savings in pensions will be cancelled! Chancellor's payback
Joking of course

MerylStreep Fri 13-Mar-20 11:40:15

Another plus. Our local Lidl are so busy they've opened a second till. ??

Lucca Fri 13-Mar-20 11:44:16

Thanks blue sky for your understanding I’m feeling very blue and missing my son. and in my opinion your posts are very reasonable sirchenjin. It’s not another if these “Get off if you don’t agree with us” threads is it ?

sandelf Fri 13-Mar-20 11:47:30

missfoodlove Now that is a silver lining smile

Greymar Fri 13-Mar-20 11:50:34

Please don't call me a wet blanket. I said I thought it would be good to be mindful of physical and mental health. If somebody finds something positive, that's nice.

I fear the situation is serious and sad for many.

Urmstongran Fri 13-Mar-20 11:52:37

Málaga. Just practiced Alexa on the iPad you hold the ‘a’ down for a second and a choice of options are displayed.

Hi back GabriellaG! ?

MissAdventure Fri 13-Mar-20 11:54:55

Finding a silver lining isn't downplaying the situation.
In fact, its the most sensible thing to do, in light of the fact that there is nothing else we can do.

I don't celebrate my daughter suffering and death, but I try (however bloody hard it is) to look for the positives.

Urmstongran Fri 13-Mar-20 11:58:46

It’s not another if these “Get off if you don’t agree with us” threads is it?

No Lucca I think SirChenjin herself at first just wanted to stop posting - then changed her mind! Which is fine, either way. Her choice she wasn’t pushed.
?

GrannyLaine Fri 13-Mar-20 12:01:02

Is it not possible to be very worried about the potential effects of the spread of this phenomenon BUT to also see a glimpse of silver lining? It doesn't make us flippant or ignorant, just realistic and clear thinking. THAT is surely what this thread is about?

ginny Fri 13-Mar-20 12:42:57

Of course it is GrannyLaine. We all need a little hope in these worrying times.
