My mum had a friend called Nancy Boyes

One of our choir members was surnamed Bracegirdle. I remarked that her Mum must have loved her Dad very much to take on that name. No. Her maiden name was Winterbottom.
Another choir member’s (married) name was Pat Down.
My all time favourite, though, is an Estate Agents in Kidderminster called Doolittle and Dalley. I can just picture them, feet up on the desk, having a snooze!

Well, I went to school with a girl who insisted her surname be pronounced Rowbotham although it was spelled Rowbottom, I later had the pleasure of trying to keep my face straight while being introduced to a Mr Winterbottom.

My father once received a letter from a colleague who signed himself Dr A.C. Rough.

A lot of people in the Glasgow area were surnamed Smellie when I was a child. All had a hard time at school.

A dd had a friend whose parents with the surname Cotton, thought it amusing to call her Polly Esther.

These are all true, promise.
A physician, Dr De’Ath. Pharmacist, Pothacary; chiropodist, Sillitoe; dentist, Dentith. A Dwayne Pipe and a Mr Fox, whose address was The Hedgrows.

Some of the posts made me laugh out loud. Thanks for starting it..

Friends with children Sam and Ella. Say it quickly!
In Tobago the hotel barman/porter was Mr Blackman. I was quite shocked as I thought people were taking the P. He assured me it was his name and thought it hilarious.

I have met an Arthur Crown; he was a delightful old soul and the name really suited him. smile

JuliaM Tue 17-Mar-20 23:00:01

The Pharmacist at the hospital l worked at was Penny Halfpenny, it certainly made some of the patients smile when she did a ward round!

Here are some of the names given to children at the elementary school in California where I taught: Holly Wood, Dusty Rhodes, and Crystal Rivers. Some first names were: Tahoe and Rome (apparently where they were conceived!)

Many moons ago, in the old paper files of the DHSS, there was a file for Mr Albert Hall, and (my favourite) Mr Colley of Shepherds Bush.

I think those people with odd names have parents who looked in a book and chose a word.
Prince, Devon, Immaculate, Precious etc.
The old Mr Getty had 14 names, one of which was Gramophone.

I knew a man called Mike Hunt. It's actually true

notgoneyet Tue 17-Mar-20 20:29:37

When I was a child there were twins who lived just up the road. Surname was Edwards. Boys were called Edward Andrew Edwards, and Andrew Edward Edwards!

Gwenisgreat1 Tue 17-Mar-20 20:28:36

When I was working, I answered the phone to a voice saying "we have Evidence for you". I said, "what do we need Evidence for you?" The voice of the staff agency at the other end said, "That's her name!"

Tweedle24 Tue 17-Mar-20 16:58:58

Florence Nightingale was the first recorded with that as a first name. It became popular when she became famous. I can’t remember whether she was born or conceived there.

In a posh hotel in Cape Town, we were served a fine selection of wines by a sommelier whose name was Medicine.

NonnaJazz Tue 17-Mar-20 15:45:04

I once had to make out a cheque to a John-Thomas Cock!

NotTooOld Tue 17-Mar-20 15:00:03

Love it - Jumbo Wang! But Florence - isn't that a well established girls name and nothing to do with Florence in Italy? My grandma was called Florence. I do wonder why the Beckhams gave their only (so far) daughter a name like Harper. You'd think they would have chosen a more feminine name after having three boys.
