On the radio on Tuesday at 4.00pm there is a programme called ‘The Hidden History of the Mantlepiece’.

My Mantlepiece has on it

A small silver elephant
A soapstone elephant
2 small glass ornaments
An American pottery vase with 4 black horses on it.
An old American clock with a glass front with a partridge on it
A much loved family teddy in a bow-tie

What’s on yours if you have a Mantlepiece ?

grin
I've been resisting the urge to lower the tone, so I'm glad someone has.

???

Alas, I recently read a book where some man was dancing with a girl and somebody observing them said she could see his stiffie from 20 feet away.….

What lovely mantlepieces you have! Mine has a vase of dried lavender, Victorian clock with a horse and man holding it, an African giraffe made of plaited wire, an empty ball- like vase from Crete, an ornament of a monkey wearing glasses and reading a book, and an ornament of a large man with a small head holding a large fish, by a Cornish sculptor, several birthday and mothers day cards. Its all rather cluttered. Must tidy it up now I cant go out. .

Dust!
A photo of my DD on her horse, a spent cartridge, a stiffie (!) (we won’t be going obviously), a carriage clock that doesn’t work very well, 2 candle sticks, a photo of the family taken years ago and rather out of focus.

A photo of my DS wedding with the entire family included. The handmade wrist corsage his wife made me for the wedding under a glass dome. Three Wade houses...I collect them and rotate the three from time to time.

SueDonim Wed 25-Mar-20 00:41:45

And I’ve just realised I’ll have to dust it all tomorrow because my cleaner isn’t coming. ?

A big mirror.
A clock & two glass candle stands with big gold candles on them.
A wooden batik-decorated pot with an ostrich egg nestling in it and a wood moon-gazing cat, both from Indonesia.
A tall cream vase containing dried hydrangea flowers and peacock feathers (I know!).
A gourd, which rattles when you shake it.
A brown pot filled with a candle.
A tin plant pot with an oxalis plant on it. I don't actually want it there but I’ve nowhere else to put it where my cats won’t eat it. hmm

Driftwood, pottery, electric candles, plants, photographs, thermometers ..

MissAdventure Tue 24-Mar-20 23:04:14

If I add anything to the scene, like an ironing board, that gets filled up with clutter too.

Jannicans Tue 24-Mar-20 23:02:30

I have things on anything I can have things on.

No mantelpiece, but my unit is rather crowded, at the moment, with Mother’s Day flowers and cards. It’s normal contents are a collection of African figures, wedding photo of DH and myself, a family group photo taken when DH was 80, and two blue glass candle holders.

GrammaH Tue 24-Mar-20 20:54:31

A Masons Ironstone clock in the middle with a small Masons ginger jar on one side & a larger on the other. A pair of glass candlesticks. A little black china chicken & a small glass mouse. The banana-shaped Valentine card I gave DH this year. A pair of large glass jars with a string of pretty lights inside - should've gone away with the Christmas decorations but I liked them too much!

A clock in the centre flanked by three Royal Worcester child figurines, October, November and December. To the right of December is a small elephant with a Flaming Katie plant then a lamp with a deer on it. To the left of November is an elephant with a baby elephant inside, a small vase with a giraffe on it and a Royal Doulton figurine of a boy with two puppies. There are also two Welsh slate souvenir coasters propped against the wall and three Mothering Sunday cards.

Rosenoir I have always wanted a dead fly! Where did you buy it? smile

Jellaway Tue 24-Mar-20 19:56:30

No mantelpiece but on a wooden chest : A turquoise china Buddha, turquoise tall ceramic vase, a silver Indian decorated elephant, a miniature Chinese black table displaying a gorgeous mini white orchid.

Namsnanny Tue 24-Mar-20 19:50:55

A cobweb
A prized collection of hand made Mothers Day cards given when the children were young.
A large mother of pearl shell. About the size of a dinner plate.
A large ammonite fossil and a small one.

Jumblygran Tue 24-Mar-20 19:43:43

Four candle sticks, one smoky smelly candle, 2 crystal vases, 1 ginger jar, 1 crystal shoe, 2 ceramic shells, 2 Pellegrino soft drink bottles each with a dead rose in it, some rose petals, dust and fairy lights. I can see I am lacking in family photos!

Urmstongran Tue 24-Mar-20 18:51:51

phoenix you always make me giggle! Your post was my best laugh of the day! Dettol .... heh!

MissAdventure Tue 24-Mar-20 17:54:39

A load of old tat here.
I suppose that speaks volumes about me being tatty smile

Lilyflower Tue 24-Mar-20 16:58:55

Eighteenth century Worcester blue and white ware with a clock made by my husband's grandfather in the middle. I think it's elegant and lovely but I think my book group found it pretentious and dull!

Coconut Tue 24-Mar-20 15:42:27

lovebeigecardigans thank you for your comment .... A friend bought the cherubs for me from a Far East company that have now unfortunately ceased trading. I’ve had so many people ask where I got them from so it is a shame as they’re such a lovely gift ...

newnanny Tue 24-Mar-20 15:30:13

Childs cricket trophies and Mothers Day cards.
