Slipping into slobbishness

I’m very sleepy and tempted to go to bed without a bath. Nobody’s going to get closer than 6’ to me anytime soon so why not wear the same clothes three days running, leave my hair unbrushed and leave my bed unmade?
Will I turn into a stinking slob and eventually stop brushing my teeth, changing my pants and cleaning the bathroom? Is slobbishness something we could all slide into if not vigilant?
I’ve now frightened myself and off to run my bath!

As a private music teacher I have been grappling with the intricacies of Zoom online lessons so l cannot be slobby as l can be seen on screen. In fact it is worse than being seen in person as it seems to hone in on every blemish. I have to be careful with the camera angle too otherwise the unfortunate pupil can see every filling or have a wonderful view of the inside of my nose.

One day last week, I hadn't even got as far as putting on my scruffy but comfy clothes when I got a video call on WhatsApp from DS.
I ended up sitting on the bathroom floor doing a twenty minute video call while stark naked! I held the phone so high that DS could barely see the top of my head, but I was terrified that it would suddenly slip and reveal all!

I’m still getting up at 5.15am each day to do a workout then get ready for work as if I’m going into the office.

Even when I used to work from home, before getting office premises, I found I had to be ‘properly’ dressed. I haven’t got a clue why as no-one else I know feels the same way!

Wow, lots of you are even slobbier than I am!
I do get dressed and wear a bra every day because I go out every day, walking the dog twice. I was out for an hour and a half this morning with five others, all spread out 2 metres apart.
I shed my bra after dinner and haven’t worn makeup for 50 years. My mother would be shocked.

Re bras and boobs. I usually wear underwired, but I am fed up of the wire poking out. I fancy trying one of those bralette. Has anyone done so and are they suitable for us older ladies?

GreenGran78 Mon 23-Mar-20 18:06:11

Merryweather. Are you a Gran, as well as a Mum, or are you a spy infiltrating from Mumsnet? smile
In either case, best wishes for the new baby's arrival. I was supposed to go to Australia for my latest GCs birth in May, but heaven knows when I will get there now.
I have never been one for staying in my pjs in the morning, or changing into them early in the evening. I usually wear comfortable clothes and no make up though, and have a shower first thing, unless I am going to the gym (and there's no chance of THAT for some time to come! I'm amazed that so many of you are casting your boobs adrift. If your bras are that uncomfortable you need to get down to M & S, as soon as you can, and get measured for some new ones. In the meantime those stretchy ones are very comfortable.
Whether slobby or stylish, take care of yourselves and stay safe.

I don't like being in nightwear during the day so I always get dressed, even if the clothes look and smell rank. I've been doing a lot of gardening and plan to sort out and tidy the mess in the house where I can. I miss going on outings but we did venture into Deepest Kent last Saturday for a walk on Ide Hill. It was glorious. There were a few other people around but we gave each other a wide berth and ate bread and stinky cheese at the deserted nature reserve later.
We come out of self-isolation on Wednesday and will try and shop for food we need but I'm dreading that. I might slob about at home instead, especially as DH is pretty good at shopping anyway.
It's tricky trying to find a new normal and takes some adjusting to. We need to be kind to ourselves as well as each other and try not to look too far ahead.

Not an easy thing for some, but getting into some semblance of a routine is what's keeping me sane. Things like pretending there's somewhere to go every morning...... bed to be made first thing, then shower and dress comfortably, (yet well enough to be surprised on 'skype' by anyone). After breakfast, housework and laundry come next but nothing crazy. I prefer to tackle things that haven't been done in a long time (washing slipcovers, or reorganizing the broom/cleaning supply closet). DH and I both have our hobbies. Mine are crocheting and painting in oils or pastels, so I toggle that with all of the above (never said routine couldn't be broken).

The mundane housework is where we've become most lax, especially when it comes to tidying up or keeping up with the dishes in the sink or emptying the dishwasher. These days, we mitigate our fear and uncertainty with the occasional squabble. Last night was such an occasion...... our sitting room looked like a bomb hit it. I was unhappy and DH couldn't care less. I went to bed late sorting out the mess.

The rest of the time we listen to music, do crossword and sudoku puzzles, read, play chess or cards with each other (if DH's in the mood) or by myself on line. In the evening, we watch the news (must stay informed), talk with our children and other family members by phone and watch movies and re-runs on TV. At any time during the day, I can also connect right here with all my Gransnet friends.

In Northeastern US where I live, people are being told it's OK to venture outdoors for fresh air, walk the dog, go for a jog etc., provided they stay six feet away from others at all times. DH and I go for walks in our own neighborhood and on Sunday afternoons we get in the car, drive around for awhile, and come back again grin

So, have patience, try not to get on each other's nerves, keep yourselves busy (make a routine) and take good care, my virtual friends. This too shall pass, safe in the knowledge that we will always find needed support from each other!

Im still bathing every day but no make up and bra and im not styling my hair its a blessed relief especially the bra
My hair is due to be coloured on Friday, but have decided that in the 12 weeks my colour will be more or less grown out, so will embrace my grey

Merryweather Mon 23-Mar-20 16:39:08

I’m still in my pjs. I have home schooled the girls this morning and thought why bother getting dressed. I will have a bath later and put on clean pjs, wash my hair etc. Vest top and pj shorts is so comfy. My boobs will be down to my ankles I’m so pregnant. Comfort is key in these last few days surely? As are leisurely baths and naps.

grannybuy Mon 23-Mar-20 16:27:49

I did do the ironing still in PJ's this morning. I do usually have bath/shower/wash then dress after breakfast, so will try to stick to it. Wearing my old ' house ' clothes of course. It's the house that's gone to the dogs! I assume no one will be coming, and if they do won't need to be invited in, so having a manyana attitude.

GagaJo Mon 23-Mar-20 16:19:59

Washed my hair. Fancy! Still no bra tho

RomyP Mon 23-Mar-20 16:05:48

I think we're all going to end up with boobs down to our knees after this! .....

And that's just the men!

Conni7 Mon 23-Mar-20 15:45:23

We had a Zoom session from four different countries for Mothers' day. Brilliant! A letter in the paper today said: "Now we will learn the real colour of everyone's hair". Mine will look like a Brillo pad.

MiniDriver56 Mon 23-Mar-20 13:45:10

I haven’t changed my routine with washing etc and still paint my nails. My biggest problem is eating things in between meals. Need to stop it!

BGM1W Mon 23-Mar-20 13:15:41

water meadow. I am also feeling the temptation to sink into slobbishness too. Especially as husband has been trying it for some time now. I have told myself to compromise and shower/wash hair every other day instead of every day. I’m hoping changing clothes will also fall into that routine too as I can always smell whatever I have cooked the day before, when I put them on next morning.

Riggie Mon 23-Mar-20 12:57:55

Grumppa my husband is working from home and mentioned that "tie on" usually means he is at work. So we have been joking about him wearing his dressing gown and a tie...

winterwhite Mon 23-Mar-20 12:37:26

I'm also among those who get washed and dressed before breakfast and wld hate not to. I wonder what a quick count of those enjoying lounge wear all day versus those not would reveal.
Clocks go forward this weekend, my ritual time from changing from winter cord trousers to jeans or denim skirts for everyday. Enjoying planning to upgrade some lighter weight tops and tee shirts from semi-best to everyday.

Thisismyname1953 Mon 23-Mar-20 12:36:24

I live with my daughter and her family. Dd and her husband are both still working but her day s off are today and tomorrow so we have decided that we will all be dressed by 9am each day otherwise the teenager will live in pyjamas for the foreseeable future! Lead by example ?

Diggingdoris Mon 23-Mar-20 12:25:02

I wouldn't mind having a pj day but my Jack Russell wants his morning walk, so I have to get up and dressed each morning. I've been a bit sloppy and worn the same jumper for 3/4 days running which normally I would not do. But as we are unlikely to have visitors, there will be no-one to criticise. It will save on the washing pile. DH wouldn't notice if I wore the same thing for 6 months!
I have decided to wear a squirt of expensive perfume every day to cheer myself up. Might as well, as I'm in the at risk group, so I can enjoy it rather than leaving it to others if I don't survive!

Craftycat Mon 23-Mar-20 12:13:40

Ellenvanin-you are not alone.!
It has to be full makeup every day & my clothes must match & look good.
I could never bring myself to slob about-I'm sure if would be lovely but I'd not feel comfortable.
I do like getting my 'snuggies' -PJ's etc on in the evening though.

Theoddbird Mon 23-Mar-20 12:08:46

Have to say I stopped showering every day when I retired. I do leave two days sometimes. I live in baggy cotton dungarees. They are so comfortable. I never used to wear trousers. I will get the linen dresses out come summer....hahaha

Growing0ldDisgracefully Mon 23-Mar-20 12:08:05

Apart from the nightmare shopping had turned into, things, don't feel a lot different for me in respect of daily routine. I did ditch the 'work' clothes (suits, work skirts and trousers), when I retired but still enjoy deciding what to wear and coordinating jewellery. Admittedly I am somewhat later with my self assembly nowadays (used to be up at 5 am every day for work), especially at weekends when there's 4 of us queuing for our one bathroom . However until I've washed (or bathed), put my face, clothes and perfume on, I feel disgusting and inhuman so no change in my routine, even though I don't leave the house every day. If I don't wear a bra, I will end up with bruised knees! Only real difference I've noticed in respect of footwear, is that I keep wearing out slippers, rather than shoes nowadays. Note to self for next supermarket visit, to add slippers to the list as the current pair are in holes!

SusieH Mon 23-Mar-20 12:01:03

I got 'caught' on Skype in my pyjamas -luckily the top half doesn't look like pyjamas! Straight off to shower after so I don't get caught out again

grandtanteJE65 Mon 23-Mar-20 11:59:59

Well, we are all different, aren't we?

I personally have never felt tempted not to wash or brush my teeth since I was twelve, so I don't think I am likely to start now.

I hope and trust that both DH and the cat would pull me up sharp if I did.
