Family What’sApp group have been debating this all day with several different answers! Any takers?

Smileless2012 Sun 29-Mar-20 16:37:50

No that's wrongblush forgot a trainer!

1 trainer = 5 + 5(man) + 10(trainers he's wearing) + 4(straps he's wearing) = 24

24 x 2 (1 strap) = 48

We had another version on our WhatsApp group- easier to see. Man is holding one each of the unknown objects in last line.

Marydoll Sun 29-Mar-20 16:38:42

If you follow Bodmas, the calculation should look like this.

So the multiplication should be done first, then add on the shoe.
However, are we counting wristbands on his wrist or not?

Whitewavemark2 Sun 29-Mar-20 16:38:45

Oh I did realise he was wearing wristbands as well as carrying them???

Grannmarie Sun 29-Mar-20 16:39:25

I didn't write it GGMK3, but I have taught it years ago as a problem solving activity to Primary 7 children!!

I couldn't remember the answer but I knew that the devil was in the details and BODMAS.

That's why I keep giving clues and suggestions, to help you towards the answer.

GracesGranMK3 Sun 29-Mar-20 16:40:27

I'm sure you're are right Grannmarie.

Smileless2012 Sun 29-Mar-20 16:40:27

I don't think he is, he's wearing them and they're hanging down (I think)confused

Marydoll Sun 29-Mar-20 16:41:42

Oh GM, remembering the horror of teaching tricky P7 maths has come back to torment me!

At least I could work back from the answer sheet if I was stuck!?

littleflo Sun 29-Mar-20 16:42:14

So sorry, I never saw this. I have just posted a different version of the same puzzle. Great minds think alike

Callistemon Sun 29-Mar-20 16:42:21

yes, I think they are weights which fit over the wrist

possibly

GracesGranMK3 Sun 29-Mar-20 16:42:46

Now I've forgotten the width of the bed for my spare room! Back to work.

Grannmarie Sun 29-Mar-20 16:44:47

Marydoll, thanks for showing the brackets, I didn't know how to do thatsmile

So, I'm going for (2×23) +5=51.

Callistemon Sun 29-Mar-20 16:45:24

Granmarie I thought he had stuck his wrists through and they were weights hanging down, so one on each wrist? ie 4?

A man (5) plus 2 shoes (10) plus 2 weights (4) = 19
x 2 = 38
+ 1 shoe = 43

Callistemon Sun 29-Mar-20 16:46:33

I can't see any brackets

Pittcity Sun 29-Mar-20 16:46:52

I make it 43

Trainer=5
Man=5
Strap=2

Bottom line: 5+10+4= 19x2=38+5=43

Callistemon Sun 29-Mar-20 16:48:24

However, are we counting wristbands on his wrist or not?
I was, Marydoll

Grannmarie Sun 29-Mar-20 16:48:47

Marydoll, my problem solving strategy for teaching P.7 tricky maths was to work backwards at the dining table the night before!!

Good brain training, well done everyone for persevering, thank you Katek!

Oh, my, is that the time?grin

Bathsheba Sun 29-Mar-20 16:51:42

Top row: 6 trainers in total, so one trainer = 5

2nd row: 2 trainers = 10, so 20 - 10 = 10. Therefore 1 man = 5

3rd row: man is 5, so 13-5 = 8. Therefore each weight (4 in total) = 2

4th row: man is holding 2 weights and wearing 2 trainers. Therefore man is: 5 + 4 (2 weights) + 10 (2 trainers). So man equals 19.

Now we have the sum 5 (1 trainer) + 19 (man) x 2 (1 weight)
So 5 + 19 x 2 = 5 x 38 = 43 (Don't forget order of operations)

So the answer is 43

Callistemon Sun 29-Mar-20 16:52:07

If there were brackets, the answer could be different.

Grannmarie Sun 29-Mar-20 16:53:00

I've counted 4 wristbands, 2 on wrists and 2in hands hanging down.
So, man=5, shoes=10, 4 wristbands=8 total=23.
2×23=46
Add 1 shoe =51.

Callistemon Sun 29-Mar-20 16:54:34

Oh, I see what you mean.

As I say, I should have gone to Specsavers but it was postponed!
Other opticians are available.

Callistemon Sun 29-Mar-20 16:56:13

I still think he has put his hand through the loop on the top of each wristband/weight so only had one on each wrist.

Marydoll Sun 29-Mar-20 16:57:11

Bottom line
[Man +2 weights+ 2 shoes ] =5+2+2+10 =19

5+ (19x2) =
5+ 38 = 43

Whitewavemark2 Sun 29-Mar-20 16:58:12

Of course by the law of averages we will hit on the correct answer eventually

Marydoll Sun 29-Mar-20 16:58:23

GM, I thought the ones on his wrists were part of the ones hanging down! ?
