After the fun ?we had yesterday, trying to solve a maths puzzle , I thought I would post a simpler one, then we can build up the difficulty over the period of incarceration!?
Not only do you have to solve it, you have to explain how you got your answer. ?
Good luck! There will be an ? from the teacher for all of those who solve it.

126

Anne Brown is 10
Brian White is 9
Mary Green is 7

Square = 3
Triangle = 2
Circle = 4
4 + 3 = 7
7 x 2 = 14

Still puzzling why Mary is only 30 if 1895 was not a Leap Year

I am also stumped on the Marry one. Is there a clue in the name (Marry not Mary) ?

Marydoll Mon 30-Mar-20 11:20:22

Like all good teachers, I will give some help with the leap year puzzle.

Marydoll Mon 30-Mar-20 11:21:02

I think Mary has been misspelled. sad

126

5x4x2 = 40
10x5x2 = 100
6x3x7 = 126

Ok I’ve done the first one and the children in the classroom and agree with others.
I can’t do the Marry/Mary one. 1895 wasn’t a leap year so how can that be. I will not sleep until I know the answer ?.
This is a good idea Marydoll. The one yesterday was such fun. I might cheat and go and ask DH if he can do this.

Ok. Like most women she didn’t like getting older so at 76 she decided to do what a lot of women do and start going backwards so in 2017 she would be 30. grin best guess

Marydoll Mon 30-Mar-20 21:25:46

Doodle ?

Who Mary was born in a leap year?
Hint: I gave a list of leap years , When is the first leap year after she was born?

Marydoll Mon 30-Mar-20 21:27:29

Patsy ?

Callistemon Mon 30-Mar-20 23:16:00

Well, it was 1896
What happened in 1896?
Or 1895

Unless she was born on 29th February in a Leap Year I can't work it out.

Marydoll I sent you an interesting anecdote re Leap Years but I don't think you've received it

Callistemon Mon 30-Mar-20 23:17:37

Put us out of our misery please
grin

Callistemon Mon 30-Mar-20 23:21:07

I think Mary died when she was 30

Marydoll Mon 30-Mar-20 23:36:52

Callistemon, I have now! grin
I haven't had a lot of time to peruse GN today. I spent two hours fighting with a floor steamer. ?
Unfortunately the tip is closed, it's in the garage awaiting it's fate.
More troublesome than any puzzle. wink

Marydoll Mon 30-Mar-20 23:54:34

This was a thinking outside of the box puzzle and the leap year table was to put you off the track. blush. Sorry!

As 1895 wasn't a leap year, it probably wasn't going to be anything to do with being born in a leap year.

The answer is, Marry was born in Room No. 1895 (in a hospital?, hotel?) ?
Today is her 30th birthday. The facts are unconnected.

Detention for me for being so cruel, methinks!

Here is another puzzle, where you need to use BODMAS.

The order you do the operations in, is important.
Hint, draw some brackets, before you start.

Callistemon Tue 31-Mar-20 00:32:30

Oh!
I never thought of that!

littleflo Tue 31-Mar-20 08:18:45

14 ?

Marydoll Tue 31-Mar-20 08:30:32

Sorry littleflo,, no.☹️

Try putting brackets around the division and multiplication parts and do them first.?

janipat Tue 31-Mar-20 08:50:17

0

janipat Tue 31-Mar-20 08:51:17

And I did the bracket bit before your hint smile might still be wrong though!

janipat Tue 31-Mar-20 08:53:05

Changed my mind 50

Nana3 Tue 31-Mar-20 09:04:11

49

Marydoll Tue 31-Mar-20 09:11:45

One person has it correct.? I will PM them.
I will leave it until lunchtime and post the working.? to give others a chance to try.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 31-Mar-20 09:26:58

Just seen this

Bod as is a complete mystery to me (well I’ve totally forgotten it)

So googled it and it’s still a mystery.

So I reckon

50

Do I need to put my workings?
Well I think I will

7+(7/7)+7x7-7
So 7/7=1
7x7=49
7+1=8
8+49-7=50

Callistemon Tue 31-Mar-20 10:02:15

I never thought of Mary's birthday being that hence my previous post.

Now to the equation hmm

(7 + 7) = 14
14 ÷ 7 = 2

(7 × 7) = 49
49 - 7 = 42

42 + 2 = 44

Callistemon Tue 31-Mar-20 10:04:38

No, got it wrong although it seemed logical it wasn't BODMASed

The answer is 50
