A little bit of toast

Being at home most of the time, when not out for a walk or gardening does seem to be making us both hungrier than usual ( not a good thing!) and DH says ( with halo on)When I am making a cup of tea ‘no biscuit for me thanks......I’ll just have a little bit of toast’ !!
Anyone else experiencing the need for a snack??

Peanut butter (crunchy) is good on toast but you have to do it right :
1. butter, right to the edges.
2. PNB, applied thickly.
3. jam.
4. clotted cream
You shouldn’t eat more than 4 slices at a time.

Even worse in tea I would think!

I like baguettes and I love chocolat but not the two together Witzend

I am a toast fan, as long as I have milk and bread I survive, milk for the tea of course, Marmite on toast for breakfast then at lunch time cheese on toast, not every day.
Who said breakfast, late lunch, no evening meal and no snacks are you for real?

I've been having two pieces of toast with lashings of butter at night in bed and yes I've been.hungry and don't know why. We will have to try and lose weight.

Crackers with a thick spreading of English butter and generous chunks of creamy Cheddar.....been having that as a "snack" a bit too often lately!

@Callistemon, when I did my French exchange trip (mid 1960s) the maman used to dip bread and butter into her bowl of milky tea every morning. The sight of globules of melted butter floating on top used to make me feel quite ill.

I’ve chomped my way through all the after school gc treats. We’re talking tiny packets of gingerbread men, pommie bear crisps etc - real tiny children snacks. Shame on me!

Callistemon Thu 02-Apr-20 19:54:13

Oh no! now we know.

I remember when I was an au pair and the children dipped their morning baguettes into their hot chocolat and tried to persuade me to do the same.
Some things should never be mixed!

Toast dipped in tea, my guilty secret

I'm not a particular fan of peanut butter but was once served PB & lettuce sandwiches - they were very nice and non-claggy.

BlueSky, the Americans apparently think that beans on toast are an abomination.

lizzypopbottle Thu 02-Apr-20 17:44:28

Desperate for snacks almost every hour, on the hour! Luckily, we don't have much tempting stuff in the house since I gave up sweet things. I bought my son an Easter egg but will resist fairly easily when he offers to share, which he definitely will.

BlueSky Thu 02-Apr-20 17:04:36

Yes Bluecat abroad toast is usually toasted cheese and ham!

Happysexagenarian Thu 02-Apr-20 17:01:35

I am always a nibbler but even more so now.
Hot Cross Buns, can't get enough of them!
Also been baking Welsh Cakes, Scones and Fudge.
We weighed ourselves last week and will again at the end of our incarceration, I'm sure I will go up a size.

Callistemon Thu 02-Apr-20 16:59:41

I do have xanthan gum, yeast is only just out of date.
And I bought some gram flour ages ago (check date) with the intention of making onion bhajis!

Thank you merlot, I will 'watch' this thread

I prefer peanut butterand marmite.

Currently on a medication that can cause you to feel hungry as a side effect. I am doing my best to resist it. Fortunately, I only have to take it for a month and the month will be up next Monday.

merlotgran Thu 02-Apr-20 16:35:59

Calli

350 mls water
2 tbsns olive oil or similar
1 egg
1 tspn salt
1 tbsn caster sugar
400g gf bread flour
2 tspns xantham gum - if you have it
1 tbspn dried milk
1 sachet yeast

This is my breadmaker recipe but I usually make the dough in the breadmaker then bake it in the oven in a loaf tin approx. 40 mins 200C

If you have or can get hold of gram (chickpea) flour and make the flour mix 375g bread flour - 25g gram flour it gives it a really nice flavour. I sometimes save the drained liquid from chickpeas and freeze it so I can add 25mls to the water instead of adding an egg.

Callistemon Thu 02-Apr-20 16:31:39

Nor any egg rings-

Q. Who uses egg rings?
A. Jamie Oliver

Callistemon Thu 02-Apr-20 16:29:34

Jamie has a recipe for crumpets and how tells us to make your own butter (we did this at school).

I have no yeast in date - will out of date yeast work?
I have no strong flour- will ordinary plain flour do?
Milk may have to be Marvel

Butter:
I have no cream

grin

Callistemon Thu 02-Apr-20 16:23:19

I may need your recipe for gf bread, merlotgran.
Mine is inedible.

merlotgran Thu 02-Apr-20 16:22:21

Crumpets?

I've almost forgotten what they look like.

Callistemon Thu 02-Apr-20 16:21:50

Has anyone got a recipe for crumpets?

Qwerty Thu 02-Apr-20 16:18:31

Lemongrove
What about Flapjacks they don't need flour? Also I saw a recipe for Pancakes with just a very ripe banana and an egg. Have fun baking!
