When Did....Become...?

Noticed when Stephen Mulhern was doing street interviews people kept saying “really?”. Quite often he was offering cash prizes. He should have said “No. Only joking!” and put it back in his wallet.

Perhaps we should start a “bring back thee and thou” movement.

Hastings college had a Scottish principal who referred to USA as “stewdENTS” which, as teenagers, we found hysterically funny.

Schools have always been academies in my part of the world ,all the local secondary schools are academies .Just ordinary state schools

I recently saw a signpost to a ‘Learning Centre’ and was quite intrigued. It turned out to be the local school!

Opticians and optometrists are not the same thing but, I must say it is only recently that I have heard the term optometrist used so often.
When did the local garage become a petrol station and only businesses dealing in repair of cars be referred to as garages?

A learning centre is probably the name for somewhere where adult education and similar takes place. It may well be a school in school hours with a different role in the evenings.

I don't like hearing pupils referred to as students. To me, it's a bit like people 'graduating' from nursery or whatever - it devalues worked-for achievements and gives young people fewer things to look forward to.

My daughter works in supported living they now have to refer to the people they support as "service users"

Social security becoming benefits which in turn became welfare.
People claiming said social security became clients and are now referred to as customers.

Newspapers, television, radio etc became media

The term pupil comes from a Latin word, meaning a “minor or ward” while student comes from the Latin for study. So I suppose originally, under-18’s were regarded as the ward of their teacher.

Americanisms are creeping in. Purse instead of handbag. Bangs instead of fringe.

Buns become cup cakes / fairy cakes

nfk fairy cakes and jacket potatoes always existed in my world. My dad used to make jacket potatoes for my brothers and I with sunday lunch as we didnt like roast potatoes!

Garages became filling ,petrol and gas stations.

Chiropodists become podiatrists

Humbertbear Pharmacists work in a chemists . Though to be fair, I often wondered when I was younger why they were called chemists when the person who worked there was a pharmacist.

Peers become cohort?????

My grandfather (who died in 1911) was a pharmacist. He owned a chemist & druggist shop.

Nfkdumpling In my life a bun was something very different to a cupcake or fairy cake.

A bun was usually made from a yeast dough as in Hot Cross buns, Chelsea buns

As a child (1950s) a great treat was a bought box of chocolate cupcakes. A sticky chocolate cake with a layer of smooth fudgy chocolate icing on top in a silver foil backed paper case.

Fairy cakes was a generic term for a home made cake in a paper case with butter-icing on top and a cherry or sprinkles on top.

... staff/employees become colleagues?

To me, signs that say things like 'Colleagues' Parking', or instruct customers to 'ask a colleague if you need help' just sound plain daft!
