When did;

‘Chemists’ become ‘Pharmacists’?

‘Pupils’ become ‘Students’?

‘Chiropodists’ become ‘’Podiatrists’?

‘Holiday’ became ‘Annual Leave’?

Any more?

Metropolitan Police Force became Police Service. What’s wrong with being forceful in pursuit of criminals?

sodapop Thu 02-Apr-20 17:48:45

I think Annual Leave is not a new thing. It's always been used in Nursing, Social Care etc. Maybe Government Depts use it mainly.

My children take the pee when I say wireless or frock. smile

I heard a very good description from a pharmacist on a DVD I was watching:

'It's the chemist who makes the drugs and the pharmacist who dispenses them.' Perhaps just a little simplistic as pharmacists are highly trained - but in essence, quite correct.

Furlough did we use that before?

LullyDully Fri 03-Apr-20 07:31:05

How about knickers becoming panties. I hate bathroom for toilet/ loo/ lav.
Toilet tissue , not toilet paper.
Endless evolution of language in our fast connected world.
My granny called her Christmas presents her Christmas box.

It must be a Norwich/Norfolk thing then M0nica. Cupcakes didn't exist in my young world, buns was the generic.

NfkDumpling Fri 03-Apr-20 07:34:11

I thought furlough was a military term?

May7 Fri 03-Apr-20 07:47:52

But Patients will always be Patients because that’s what they have to have Patience
Sorry couldn’t resist this old nursing joke

Grandma70s Fri 03-Apr-20 07:48:50

I resist using most of these Americanisms. A lot of them are euphemistic, something I abhor.

I too dislike bathroom for lavatory, but then I dislike toilet for lavatory just as much. At my infant school in the 1940s we were not allowed to say toilet. It was considered a coy, vulgar euphemism. We said lavatory, which come to think of it is also a euphemism - it means place for washing - but one more lost in the mists of time..

When did disco become Club?

M0nica Fri 03-Apr-20 07:53:55

NfkDumpling I had a peripatetic childhood so it could be London, where my family came from, Yorkshire, Carlisle or Berkshire, I will exclude the foreign bits.

You are right furlough is a military term, but in my (military) childhood, it was also used by expats making their careers in foreign countries who got six months home leave every three years.

XXXX YYYY and ZZZZ just say all change here

sodapop Fri 03-Apr-20 08:37:12

I hate 'panties' too Lullydully

curvygran Fri 03-Apr-20 09:05:10

Pants rather than knickers any day - unless you are American , then it all gets a bit confusing.

Chestnut Fri 03-Apr-20 09:25:39

I always think of knickers as being those navy woollen things we wore for PE.

FarNorth Fri 03-Apr-20 09:27:26

Way back in the 70s, working in a bank, a colleague always registered school pupils who opened an account as 'student', saying it made the pupil feel more grown up.

Hetty58 Fri 03-Apr-20 09:29:00

When did admin staff become 'project managers'?

FarNorth Fri 03-Apr-20 09:37:33

I think it became popular to say "Xxx is on Annual Leave" rather than on holiday because it sounds less frivolous and gives the impression that this is something that happens only once a year, which isn't the case.
So the customer/client/service user is meant to feel less bad about not being able to contact Xxx.

gulligranny Fri 03-Apr-20 09:39:19

When did ReSEARCH become REEsearch?
Schedule become Skedule?
A tv series become a box-set?
Barbecue become barbeque?

FarNorth Fri 03-Apr-20 09:39:33

Oh yes, and 'contact' or 'try to contact' has become 'reach out'.

curvygran Fri 03-Apr-20 09:40:07

Chestnut they were called ‘gym bloomers ‘ when I was little, navy blue with our names embroidered ( by mum) across the front ,
