When did;

‘Chemists’ become ‘Pharmacists’?

‘Pupils’ become ‘Students’?

‘Chiropodists’ become ‘’Podiatrists’?

‘Holiday’ became ‘Annual Leave’?

Any more?

Flats - apartments
(And so often ‘stunning’ in EAs’ blurbs, if not actual hovels.)

Chemist is a general term, a chemist can be anyone from a pharmacist to research chemist, industrial chemist, forensic chemist etc.
I think the name has been used by firms over the years such as Boots, Timothy White and Taylor's (remember them?) and has become a generalised term.

A pharmacist is a person who is trained and qualified in the science of pharmaceutical medicines and can dispense medicines.

M0nica fairy cakes were referred to as 'fairy buns' in Devon, which I found stranfe when I lived there.
When is a swede not a swede? When you shop in Devon, when it is called a turnip.

katek I heard employees referred to as colleagues quite recently on tv, which was rather insulting as the most senior colleague of all was laying off his more junior colleagues.

Old gummer that’s arisen because of how it sounds. Try teaching planets to a class of teenagers - some are very keen to say things like ‘how big is Uranus miss ‘ or ‘Has anyone seen Uranus?’ making it sound like Your anus’ - cue lots of giggling. Even When you have introduced the planet as YUR - a - nus!!!

University - Uni. (Thanks Neighbours!)

Mollygo Fri 03-Apr-20 11:04:52

Logistics and podiatrists-I had to look both of them up when I first heard them.
Knickers-definitely the navy blue ones we wore when PE was done in vests and knickers. Pants are fine but don’t get me started on panties!

Calendargirl Fri 03-Apr-20 11:10:50

grandtanteJE65 Fri 03-Apr-20 11:13:49

Actually senior is used in modern German to designate the elderly.

Americanism! Drives me mad!!!

Jens Fri 03-Apr-20 11:18:46

This is the drip drip drip of Americanisms infiltrating and degrad8ng our language, why? Because American English is a very simplified version of the queens English, and we have let them.
I worked for an American company and was asked to simplify my language because they often could not understand me. That about sums it up!

Thecatshatontgemat Fri 03-Apr-20 11:21:02

Schoolchildren have become Students.
People say "something turned out beautiful" for example, rather than beautifully. Dropping the "fully" from many statements.
Saying" Skedule " rather than Schedule.
Talking" with" someone, not To them.

He list goes on end on and on......

Gemini17892 Fri 03-Apr-20 11:24:10

Wireless become radio

jaylucy Fri 03-Apr-20 11:28:33

About the Opticians/Optometrists query - Opticians can just test sight and prescribe glasses. Optometrists can also prescribe and fit contact lenses!

Senior School become High School

Lizbethann55 Fri 03-Apr-20 11:32:37

Oh grannysomerset I am with you on that one. It is my greatest irritant!!!!
Also . When did children become baby goats. And when did gay people stop being merry and bright?

Lizbethann55 Fri 03-Apr-20 11:34:52

edsnana for a moment I thought you were being very unkind referring to gransnetters as being sewers (drains) , then it clicked!?????

Rosebank16 Fri 03-Apr-20 11:41:39

How about 'solicitors' became 'lawyers' What's that all about ??‍♀️

GloryB Fri 03-Apr-20 11:43:46

The thing that really annoys me is when a couple announce that ‘they’ are pregnant. They may be expecting a baby but only one of them can be pregnant.

Aepgirl Fri 03-Apr-20 11:44:01

Riding schools become Equestrian Centres
Bin men become Refuse Collectors

Vicars stop wearing stiff dog-collars (see Grantchester) in favour of the small piece of white fabric that slots into the shirt.

Changing names is a job-retention ploy for someone who is not actually needed
