Anyone ever put important items in a safe place. Then discovered you have forgotten where you hid them lol or is it just me.

DH has the best memory- he remembers things put in a safe place with ease but I keep a list on my phone as others have suggested.
Wish I’d put my nail file in a safe place or told DH !

Not usually, but at the moment...wow! I’ve lost/mislaid the address book. (I don’t know how, it’s huge) And for the first time in 65 years of wearing glasses ?, I’ve lost a pair of specs! Searched the house to no avail! Oh well, thank heavens for spare pairs.

I had a very large bill to pay, I knew I had the cash, but could I find it. We searched and searched, I kept repeating "I know I put the money somewhere safe" After about 2 hours - I suddenly shouted out "that's it - the safe". I then had to remember the security number for the safe - after about an hour, I opened the safe and there was the money - what an idiot.

Unlike you, harrigran it took me forever to admit that my engagement ring might truly have been lost/stolen/thrown out, so I used to have “little raids” in places where I might have put it - but nothing too desperate.....so I’d always have hope. Our house was on the market, so pretty well organised. We allowed the Estate Agent to show a couple around - just once, when we were off to Hampton Court. I wasn’t happy, so hid some jewellery and a couple of handbags. Searched those handbags, of course, but couldn’t actually recall hiding my engagement ring. Later photos showed I wasn’t wearing it in London. During a year and in an increasing panic I turned out our home 3 times......really really turned out every single thing in every room, from cutlery drawers to old boxes, bookshelves, medicine cabinet, under furniture. Made me very sad. We had a completion date. I decided to tackle clothing - we were moving abroad so lots to store and dispose of. Folded everything from my wardrobe one afternoon and boxed. A big folded pile for the charity shop, a little one for recycling on the bed. I had a very pretty knitted cotton waistcoat which I occasionally wore over a silk shirt. My Mum coveted both, so I thought I’d give them to her. I phoned her. She was thrilled. I put the shirt into a bag and smoothed out the waistcoat. The tiny pocket on the front wouldn’t flatten. I shrieked and almost deafened Mum - tucked inside a folded tissue was my engagement ring! Only then did I remember deciding to hide it moments before leaving for Hampton Court.

I have not been able to find two bracelets, DH says it should not be difficult and I should just check the safe. I have looked in handbags and in boxes on wardrobe shelves as well as the safe but no luck. My mind is completely blank, could I actually have thrown them out when tidying up ?
The bracelets are not costume jewellery, one is sapphires and diamonds, I really need to be more careful.

We both do this a lot! I have now been taking a photo on my phone (as another poster also suggested) but sometimes I don't remember what the item in the photo isconfused for example could not work out what one pic was, turned out to be the gauze to pack in gd's nose when she had a nosebleed!

OH is the worst person in the world for losing things. Absolutely maddening.

All the time.
I ‘hide’ important papers, jewellery and keys when I go away and inevitably forget where so I now list them in ‘Notes’ on my phone in a form of code. Trouble is, on return I can’t decipher the code and it takes a few days for the penny to drop .e.g. baked beans, Jane Eyre, tea cosy. confused. If I lost my phone, Id be scuppered.
However, if I hide chocolate (so I don't eat it ?) I always remember where it’s secreted. Funny that!

So very happy to hear I am not the only one

That made me laugh BlueBelle. It’s so frustrating though, isn’t it? My mystery hiding places seem to be happening far more often now, unfortunately.

MissAdventure Sat 04-Apr-20 23:33:13

Yes, and I always congratulate myself on finding such an ingenious place that I just know I'll never forget.

Then I immediately forget.

One year before I went on holiday I realised I d got about £100 in my purse which I didn’t want to take with me so hid it until I returned
When I came back I could not remember where on earth i d hidden it It took me a week of heavy hunting and wringing hands before I went to the wardrobe to get a thin scarf out to put round my neck and out dropped the money

Found some very special chocolates I hid from my husband. they were in a bookcase.
I spent hours looking for them at Xmas time

Chewbacca Sat 04-Apr-20 23:09:38

Happens all the time. And when I find it again, months later, I'm astounded that I could have ever forgotten where I'd put it. And so history repeats itself over and over again.....

My husband and I did exactly the same thing as GrannySomerset. Had to replace all sorts of cards, bus pass etc. We were also burgled some time later and as part of the 'locking the stable door after the horse had bolted' operation, decided to have a safe installed.

Now we really have a safe place.

giulia Sat 04-Apr-20 20:09:45

Granny23 Good idea. Will copy you!

giulia Sat 04-Apr-20 20:08:01

Yes, ery often. However, I often find the lost object when seeking the NEXT object I put in a safe place and lost.

Consolation?

DanniRae Sat 04-Apr-20 18:36:29

My answer is to say to Mr R "I am putting this in safe place" and show him. Hopefully one of us will remember!!

eazybee Sat 04-Apr-20 17:43:11

All The Time.

Kaggi60 Sat 04-Apr-20 17:31:17

I put my engagement ring away cause lost stone. My husband and I went to the jewellery store to get another got back and found the ring sitting right in front of the cupboard. Xxx

I find a worse problem with throwing things out. If you've had something for years and then have a clear out.............. a year later you start looking for it. You have a funny feeling you may have thrown it out but can't be sure. Nothing worse than looking for something you no longer have.

Shortly after we moved house we went away for a weekend, I hid my mother’s small lockable strongbox which contained all the jewellery she had left me and also my own. I knew it was safe so put it to the back of my mind.

A couple of months later I wanted some special earrings out of it, do you think I could find it, I looked everywhere, even the loft. I had quite a few sleepless nights worrying.

Weeks later I got my sewing box out of a low shelf in a wardrobe and lo and behold the box was behind it.

I still don’t remember putting it there. I know where it is now though!

Witzend Sat 04-Apr-20 17:02:07

So often with bought-early Christmas presents.

However it can have its advantages. One year, well after Christmas, I found a few small boxes of chocs I’d bought for various stockings, had hidden in the sideboard, and forgotten.

Dh and I were very happy that night!

CherryCezzy Sat 04-Apr-20 16:44:22

I'd lose that notebook Granny23 blush
I tend to lose paperwork the most often as my filing system is poor erratic at best!

SalsaQueen Sat 04-Apr-20 16:34:26

All the time! I still can't find:

a garlic press
a small glass jug
a pair of sandals
