Knowing that frequent shopping is not a good idea during this crisis and that we cant guarantee that the next week we can repeat the process, I am constantly thinking of meal plans, what's in the house, what needs topping up, how long the loo roll supply will last. So far, so good. Its good planning that stops us running out of tea bags or yogurt. But OH and I find that we are buying that bit extra. The 2 for 1 on chocolate digestives for example. Its like survival mode kicks in. We no longer have the luxury of popping down to the shops if we need a pint of milk or that emergency kitkat.

So our shopping habits have changed. I find that we are now adding to the weekly shop, stuff we wouldn't buy normally, just in case. But the stuff we are adding is the snacky stuff. Before, weeks would go by without us giving a thought to chocolate or biscuits or crisps. If the mood took us, why there's a shop round the corner. Now that option has gone I am planning the snacks into the shopping, just in case. And because those snacks are there, we are eating the dam things.

While this seems a bit frivolous and first world problems, I do wonder whether the hoarding and stockpiling behaviour that is stripping the shelves bare has some deep instinctive roots. Maybe the very thought of a restriction in our food supply sends some of us a bit crazy. For OH and i, its the thought that we cant get a kitkat mid shop because its not essential ,so we buy it just in case. For others, buying tons of perishable food, such as the woman in Dorset who has thrown away £250 worth of food since the crisis has begun. The survival instinct distorts our thinking.

For many of us, this is probably the first time we have had a real reason to be concerned about our survival.

At least with all the easter eggs we have to get through DH and I will last a week without buying chocolate!! For me It's fruit and vegetables and eggs. With vegs I can make soup, with eggs - omelette and fruit for afters. Chocolate to suit the cravings - who needs more?

Sodapop, don't know where you are but you can get dark choc Kitkat from Amazon UK, unfortunately they are mostly available in rather large boxes! grin

When living in Germany before the wall came down read the list in the back of the phone book which told one what to keep in the larder in case of invasion. Discovered this was what I normally kept in stock. Still not had to buy loo roll since this lot kicked off.

Eeek why did you tell me that Alison333 Finger is poised over the Amazon button already. Another side effect of this pandemic is loss of will power. grin

We arent very restricted in this country, but we dont shop as often as we used to, however I always HAVE to have my favourites, bread, milk, and eggs so I do stock up extra, why I dont know, I can go any time and buy, there isnt any sense in my actions, maybe its "just in case"

I've discovered frozen veg since the lockdown. It's much better than I thought. Peas, carrots, broccoli, green beans etc. Pea soup tomorrow in the soup maker. Delicious way to keep up the 5 a day.

I have found that a teabag does at least 2 cups and maybe 3 if you don't drink builders tea.

paddyanne Boots online have all their hair dyes available, including Clairol Root Touch-up on offer, 2 for £9!

I called into the local branch the other day for antihistimine and they had loads of hair colour on the shelves.

I normally do a shop for my daughter every week, as she and her partner worked in a pub/restaurant. She would do a big payday shop, and then I would top that up with school lunch box food and fruit each week. I got a message this morning that she needed quavers, potatoes and cauliflower. She also needed carrots because my 4year old DGD had announced that if she didn't have carrots she was going to die. What a drama queen!

paddyanne Sat 11-Apr-20 18:11:18

Riverwalk thanks but I tried there first my shade is out of stock might be back in two weeks .I couldn't wait that long

Jane10 Sat 11-Apr-20 18:24:44

But clareken surely the pub/restaurant is closed. They should be doing your shopping!

I just live normally. No overbuying, in fact, the 2 x packs of 9 loo rolls have only had 2 taken out so far and I've had them since before my hols, before all this started.
Granted, there us only me at home but I o my shop once a week now.
Today it was M&S. Very civilised queue at 8am in sunshine. No trolley until you reached the door. No security, just the manager on the door.
Most staff had no gloves and definitely no masks.
Only saw two customers gloved and masked.
I did not wear gloves and nor did 8/10 customers. No arrows to keep the flow one way but there were markers about 10 ft apart outside.
I bought 2 oranges, 2 lemons and a hand of green bananas plus 3 litres Cornish Gold milk, fish, bread, butter, 1pk cheese n chilli hot X buns, choc n hazelnut spread, hot choc sachets, coffee and anti bac wipes ( good value for 72 @ £1.50. I already had fruit, rich tea bis, eggs and other stuff.
Think I'm eating less as it's warm weather.
Oh yes, a bag of those delicious oval new potatoes.
My tomato plants, grow bags and herbs have arrived and settling in nicely.
Such are the pleasures small things bring.
No need to overbuy at all.
To do so is greedy.

GabriellaG54 Sat 11-Apr-20 19:30:44

clareken
Why can't your daughter (or her partner) shop for themselves? ?

On line shopping has created desires I didn't know I had. Scrolling through looking for somethings four eye is attracted such things as huge chocolate bars, crisps, luxury biscuits all with special offers. Once purchased they have now become staples. Whole nut has become my must have!

dianetheartist Sat 11-Apr-20 22:30:31

we are not allowed out at all :-( so I have to rely on my daughter to pick up our shopping.. She has a bad back at the moment so I am not asking for any extras at all.. It really makes you think about what is really needed..Its horrible-I always think of something I needed after she has dropped off the shopping. What I wouldn't give to have a shop in a supermarket at the moment. We have no chocolate-bought
no Easter eggs for the grandkids or ourselves..could kill for some dark chocolate at the moment..Will try and remember to ask her to pick some up when she can..

Two shops ago my DH forgot eggs and we were down to the last 6. They are something we always keep a good stock off because so easy to make meals from. Last week he went shopping and remembered to buy eggs. As there were 4 over ripe bananas he suggested making banana bread. Then I found we were down to the last 500gr of butter. Oh well 120gr for the banana bread is okay. He then suggested orange or lemon cake to use the fruit in the garden but that needed 150gr butter. Maybe not.
We usually buy Brittany unsalted butter from a French supermarket 35km away so thats out. So next time he goes shopping we will need butter. Will just have to write down what unsalted butter is in Portuguese for him. As for chocolate he has a sweet tooth so there is no shortage of that in the house. smile

Not the shopping but a well stocked garage. Our boys say they will send us off for the weekend and hire a skip.
However, one had diffs with his dishwasher last week and phoned dad ........Do you have a hose would do the back of this dishwasher? Of course there was, and a new one at that.
Another son phoned because his electric shower was broken. He'd found an old one that would fit temporarily on the taps...... Would you have anything to fit this to the wall?...... Of course... Dad provided a sliding pole for the wall and an extending tension rod and I found two shower curtains. Sorted.

I buy spares because we live in an earthquake zone. (Wellington, NZ) In this area we are encouraged to have enough supplies for a month in case a big one happens. We even have a water tank that collects rainwater in case the water pipes have broken. We had a big shake a couple of years ago which made us all very conscious of what could happen.
So it is interesting that so many people here have been panic buying. We should not need to if we are as prepared as we should be! But must admit i did buy more loo paper etc. People find it hard to be ready for something that isn't immediate!

Kind bars - chocolate & seasalt.

OH tunes into all sorts online, so was of a mind to boost our meagre stores back in January. We lugged extra tins, loo roll & stuff from the supermarket for a couple of weeks - no car, no buses to cover the route, so it was little & frequent.

One useful bit of advice was to stock up on everyday treats so any shortfall of usual fare did not cut so deep. Rather like Christmas, we loaded up on treats, & just like Christmas we ate it because they were there!! So rapidly gaining weight, we had to self -impose rationing of treats.

Must haves are: loose leaf tea, fresh vegetables, crunchy stuff (hello celery & radishes), bread, butter, bay leaves, olive oil, fresh going black pepper, dried oregano & brown rice.
OH has a box of biscuits he has been saving for today & I have an emergency stash of Montezuma dark chocolate buttons. But my weakness is Kind chocolate & sea salt bars which I buy in bulk on Amazon, & this is my everyday treat to help me put-up with it.

I have become more careful about storing fresh produce. Everything put away in cool dark place so that it doesn’t spoil, & a meal plan to make best use of what we’ve got, everything gets used.

The only thing that I bought extra of since the start of this is cat food as you can't explain to a cat that you have run out. I have bought nothing more than I would normally have bought. Not even one extra tin of beans. I have never been able to understand why people needed to do it....

jeapurs54 Sun 12-Apr-20 22:07:08

My Daughter ordered me some Tea Bags as we were nearly out she ordered from Amazon and we received a box of 10 tea bags. We were shocked that she would have ordered only 10 but laughed about it after.
