What a kind gesture from your neighbours! This new lifestyle we're all adopting does bring out some lovely words and deeds. They far outweigh the idiocy and selfishness I've heard mentioned.
It was lovely. My GS has 2 eggs, but they were the same. He's getting theirs as a swop for one of his and we're going to give his extra one in return, to them. Along with a hand print from him.
❤️
My neighbours are lovely but as I live in a road of bungalows, they are all elderly. I am the only person young enough to be going out shopping, everyone else is shielding themselves and relying on family to do their shopping. It's just so quiet here, no chatting over fences, very little clapping for key workers, no one walking past the house and no cars! I live on my own and am really missing human contact.
Although I go out shopping every week, I have mobility problems so could not make such a lovely gesture like delivering Easter Eggs but I'm now thinking of something I could do for my immediate neighbours, maybe I could make something for them?
That would be lovely. Cards maybe? To be honest, even the written note would have been nice.
They're ALL clapping on my street though. When I moved here, it was quite a fragmented community with a lot of rented houses, but it has gradually 'come up' and is now a lovely mixed age range, family neighourhood.
There is so much virtue signalling about at the moment. Frankly I find it depressing.
HOW is doing something nice virtue signalling?
I'm as cynical as they come, but...
Well give me the people who’ve made some of the gestures mentioned on this thread than the sour faced mean minded people who criticise them ?
It takes a very disjointed view of human nature to perceive 'virtue signalling' on posters' accounts of kind neighbourliness.
That was lovely and no way 'virtue signalling'. Someone thought of a nice way to lighten the monotony of lockdown and give a gift.
One of my GD's little school friends was disappointed that he wouldn't receive any Easter eggs this year from his grandparents or relatives because they're self isolating, or live a distance away, and his mum is a single parent and now out of work. He understood completely why this had to be the case but, as he's only 6, I felt quite sorry for him. 2 of my neighbours and I agreed that, on our next shopping trip, we'd each buy an extra egg for him. I walked down to his house, late on Thursday night and left the eggs in his garden, with a note from the Easter bunny. His mum contacted me to say how happy he had been and how grateful she was to live amongst people who thought of a little boy's Easter, amidst everything else that's going on.
If anyone wants to interpret this as virtue signalling, thats fine with me but I firmly believe that a tiny little gesture of kindness sends ripples out far and wide. A kind act is remembered far longer than a mean one.
Esspee. That’s a bit mean minded isn’t it? I’d be thrilled if someone left me a chocolate egg
The kindness shown by people during this period will hopefully outweigh the bad behaviour
We have had a book/dvd box by our gate for a month now, people are taking and donating books. Nobody has abused it yet!
A Romanian lady took a cookery book yesterday, she was so thrilled and so excited to try “English recipes”.
Tomorrow the basket of Easter Joy will be placed next to it full of chocolate eggs.
It’s not virtue signalling it’s just being kind.
We are not key workers and want to do something on a community level so with checking on neighbours and taking some home baking to a few people we feel in some small way we can make a difference.
It is becoming tiresome hearing genuine acts being labelled as virtue signalling, soon people won’t want to do anything good for fear of being accused of VS.
As a general rule, those who make snide comments about human concern and kindness ( using that pathetic phrase virtue signally) are those who would never put themselves in the position of carrying out any action which could be so wilfully and unkindly misconstrued. I found a bag of Easter Eggs on my doorstep yesterday btw.
How did your neighbour get past the over zealous police checks with 40 non essential purchases in their trolley!!!!!
I’ve just had a chocolate bunny from next door neighbour who’s delivered one to everyone in the street - I think it’s a lovely gesture!
Apparently our local WI all received an Easter Egg on their door step - such a lovely gesture.
Great to see that virtue signalling is alive and well and spreading a smile wherever it goes!
I have no idea QQ. We don't know them. Just the house number.
My road is about 2 miles long so not a neighbourly place
I know my two immediate neighbours to say hello to and that’s about it so no neighbourly Easter eggs in my road unfortunately
On Thursday when everyone in our cul de sac had finished clapping for carers, one of the neighbours that I acknowledge but haven't really spoken to (I'm usually at work) called out "Come on ladies, let's all grab a glass if wine or something and stand at our front gates and have a chat for 10mins. It was so nice and we all agreed it should become a weekly routine. We also agreed that once this is all over, we'd organise a street (or should that be a cul de sac?) party instead of all just going back to our routine of a friendly wave as you go past.
I’m just off to do some virtue-signalling. My freezer has broken down
so I’ve asked the neighbours if anyone would like anything from it that’s still useable - and it’s been welcomed.
Sue. Oh dear, sorry about your freezer, especially in this weather, what a kind thought, ..hope it’s not too long til it’s replaced.
Thanks, Silverlining. A new one should be delivered on Thu. ? It’s still working after a fashion. The fridge bit is the outside temp and the freezer is now fridge temp. I can at least keep milk and cheese cool in that bit.
