Today I prepared for, dressed myself up (lagged myself really), wore my disposable gloves and set out for a big shop. I make a comprehensive list the day before and don't sleep well as I dread the scary shopping situation so much but needs must.
It all went well in the shop and I found everything on my very long list including an Easter egg for DH, his special nuts, chocolate and tonic water for him.
I staggered home with 5 huge bags of stuff. What did DH say? 'Oh well, we'll we'll just have to make do with what you've got.'
Things are a bit quiet in our house this afternoon.

Was your DH trying to make a joke/sarcastic remark? It's a bit hard to explain in writing as you don't get the tone.

Maybe, as you had so many bags or more bags than normal, he thought he'd make what he thought was a witty remark.

Quite apart from the ingratitude of 'him indoors', please don't get too stressed about shopping. Honestly, the basic precautions of proper frequent hand-washing and 2 metres distancing will make a massive difference to your chance of catching the virus. It's the same with seasonal flu, which has pretty much the same results. As for the DH, I would be telling him his 'special nuts' and Easter eggs are quarantined until further notice!

We have had 'a little chat'. He's assured me that he's very appreciative of the catering arrangements and is now hoovering. Thats going a bit better since I told him to empty the blessed thing. Every day's a school day in lockdown it would seem.

Just before the restrictions began (and when toilet paper was becoming scarce) I struggled home with a large pack plus heavy shopping trolley (no car these days). Next day no TP anywhere. DH said he wasn't keen on the TP I'd bought, could I get Andrex or one of the other makes we sometimes buy. Felt like finding some Izal for him (or sheets of newspaper) grin

My husband just can't get his head around our shopping arrangements.
Our daughter forbids me to go out , OH can't anyway, so she does all our shopping.
OH will suddenly annouce---I need my coffee filter papers, I need more marmite (neither of which I use so have nothing to do with) and seems bemused that it doesn't suddenly appear.
He is fully aware of the current restrictions, it just seems that as he rarely goes out anyway then he sees his life as more or less normal

Stereotyping men again!! Even when they do shop it's never good enough for women.

Just to let you know, my Dad has ALWAYS shopped, cleaned up, done the ironing, cleaned pots, done the garden, the washing, cleaned the car DIY etc. even though my Mum tries to beat him too it.
Now my brother is their carer and he too is following in my Dad's footsteps, doing everything. He bakes some really good cakes but he has to put a hold on that as they are all putting on weight during this crisis.

Is it men over a certain age that tend to expect their partner to do "household" chores?

Vampirequeen. No my son is not ill or disabled. He is working at home and his wife has been furloughed. He did offer to pop out but she likes to drop in and see her elderly parents and gets me little bits if I need them. He is learning that he cannot be so fussy as are her parents.

jaylucy Wed 15-Apr-20 10:15:54

I'd certainly be the one eating the chocolate !
"Special nuts" they'd be off the shopping list for the future too!

vampirequeen Wed 15-Apr-20 10:15:26

Does your son has mental/physical health issues? If not, tell him to either take it or leave it. He'll not let himself starve.

vampirequeen Wed 15-Apr-20 10:13:50

Eat his egg. Crush his nuts.

Pippa22 Wed 15-Apr-20 10:11:47

Jane 10, I would have crushed his nuts then eaten his special nuts !

Flakesdayout Wed 15-Apr-20 10:07:19

Typical man me thinks!! And I would eat the Egg. My son is the same. His poor wife has been 'out' shopping and he has 'specific needs'. He likes his pasta penne, nothing else and various other vegetarian bits and pieces. She was almost in tears as she shops for her parents too..... so I have raided my cupboards and stocked her up a little I hope. My partner on the other hand is just happy to be eating !! ( and lots of it too!)

Oh dear my DH was so impressed by how a large supermarket (which we normally avoid) is dealing with the current situation that he applied for a temporary driver job there and got it At the age of 65. So maybe OP should send her DH to get next week’s special nuts ...

nahsma Wed 15-Apr-20 10:04:54

Cymres1 The day after I came out of hospital (broken ankle, loads of metalwork, temporary - huge - plaster from toes to knee), him indoors went to do the shopping. He bought most of the things on the list, in an idiosyncratic way, but also added weird stuff - smoked sprats and a tinned pie “easy for you to cook”!!!!! I went with him next time.

Nana4 Wed 15-Apr-20 10:04:42

Jane10 so grateful for the laughs your post prompted today! Every reply was a gem, but yes I can see my husband making a jokey remark too... however, you know your husband best. I’d send him shopping next...

Cymres1 Wed 15-Apr-20 09:54:28

Took my husband in the car, made him wait and share unloading. He's barely shopped in 34 years, been a learning curve. I think your husband should maybe have a go next time. You stay home and relax.

pollyperkins Wed 15-Apr-20 08:00:01

Love the picture Bradford lass! Yes davidhs maybe he was joking. My DH would likely say that as a joke!

Jane10 Wed 15-Apr-20 07:48:20

See picture above Davidhs. You would certainly be roughing it after saying something like that to me!

Davidhs Wed 15-Apr-20 07:46:39

You are over sensitive, my comment would likely have been “looks like we’re going to rough it” this weekend

BradfordLass73 Wed 15-Apr-20 01:34:56

I've just seen this great picture and thought it applied to every outraged person (self included) on Gransnet. grin

Bathsheba Tue 14-Apr-20 16:43:29

Jane10 ?

Jane10 Tue 14-Apr-20 16:18:30

Ooh good riposte Bathsheba wish I'd thought of it!

Kalu Tue 14-Apr-20 16:04:04

He sounds like a real extra large nut job!

Bathsheba Tue 14-Apr-20 15:50:27

I think my response may have been "yes, I'm used to making do with what I've got - you, for a start."

Eat his egg, give his nuts to the birds, and let him 'make do' wink
