DIRECTIONS

Add the olive oil and the butter to a hot 12 inch frying pan, that has a tight fitting lid, and sir until melted.
Add the onion and saute until transparent, followed by the drained mushrooms and continue to saute the mixture.
Add the curry powder and spam and when the spam starts to brown, add the rice and stir until all the grains are covered in the oil/butter.
Might cause a buying spell in supermarkets
Mick

Or not!?

Carillion01 Sun 19-Apr-20 11:29:04

Mick, this is so wrong, on many levels...

SPAM in a buttered lettuce and tomato bread roll with ketchup or brown sauce...Yes!
SPAM as a fritter with fat chips and mushy peas...Yes!
SPAM and pineapple cubes and cherry tomatoes and cheese cubes, on cocktail sticks, circa 1970...Yes!

SPAM curry ......?

Spam in anything-yuck. Are we rationing?

sodapop Sun 19-Apr-20 11:48:22

No no no. I'm with Carillion on this. A step too far.

I feel quite queasy

Spam curry? You are easily pleased, Michael.

Spam in a salad sandwich is as far as I can go with the horrible stuff!

I seem to remember curried eggs in the 70s and 80s as well. Didn’t like them either.

H1954 Sun 19-Apr-20 11:56:17

Spam? ??! Disgusting processed crap!

CherryCezzy Sun 19-Apr-20 11:57:53

Me too Lucca.I liked spam as a child but only when it wasn't actually refered to as spam ?. As an adult, when I hear it mentioned I think yuk! Sorry Mick I think I'll leave that one out.

Had a sneaky liking for spam fritters....at school but when our local chippy did them as a one off they were of course not as good as nostalgia thought.

Spam was one of my dearly departed husbands favourites, spam sandwiches, spam egg and chips spam mash and peas. He was brought up in a household of 4 brothers they were quite poor so I assume it was cheap and cheerful for his Mum. Mind you he didn’t ‘do’ curry so even he would of given this one a miss.
Oh! and it had to be Spam from a tin ‘round’ Spam wouldn’t do.
YUK!!! I haven’t bought any since he sadly died ?

As a real food lover and thoughI say it myself a pretty good home cook, I would like to offer an alternative recipe.

Open tin of spam taking care not to cut your fingers.
Place the spam in the centre of piece of newspaper ( preferably tabloid, I find the Daily Mail best for this recipe)
Now top the whole spam with as many used tea bags as possible, now carefully wrap and place the package on a second sheet of newspaper.
To this add as many vegetable peelings as you can find and if you are unfortunate enough to have any add some tripe at this stage.
Wrap really well and immediately place in. bin closing the lid as quickly and firmly as possible.
This recipe also works well with chopped pork and anything Mattesons make and create into a sausage shape.

??? Oh Missfoodlove, that is so entertaining!

In my meat eating days when I was a student nurse sharing a house with 2 other nurses, we used to often buy Spam , cut thickly from the round (4) on a machine.
We'd fry it and have in barm-cakes with brown sauce or ketchup. It was nice to have a choice.
I wonder if the shop on Whitehedge Road, Garston, is still there.
We lived at (I think) number 68.
Police used to call there a lot...to play cards. ☺️??

GabriellaG54 Mon 20-Apr-20 00:20:08

Nope, just looked but a shop us still in same place. We lived in 3 storey red brick with an odd 3 digit number and front door to the left of the window and mosaic tiled path. ?

GabriellaG54 Mon 20-Apr-20 00:21:26

'Spam spam spam', as Eric Idle would say.

Feelingmyage55 Mon 20-Apr-20 00:28:14

Yuk!

Carillion01 Mon 20-Apr-20 19:23:04

GabriellaG54 I concur re Monty Python's Spam song.
As an aside, do you refer to Garston, the place very near to where the BEATLES emerged? I'm intrigued.

GabriellaG54 Mon 20-Apr-20 20:05:56

Yes, I do indeed. Garston, Liverpool.

GabriellaG54 Mon 20-Apr-20 20:06:35

My hometown.
