Are people dieting for when lockdown ends?

I only ask this question because when we went to Morrisons a lot of the dieting type foods were missing or the shelves were very run down. As some of you know DH and I have been losing weight for a while and whilst recently we've had problems getting our tinned pulses, there hasn't been an issue with sweetner and other 'diet' foods. In fact it's been easier because most people seem to have been on a treats binge. This time we couldn't get any own brand (cheap) granulated sweetner and had to pay for a brand sad. Also healthier snacks seemed to be in short supply. I wonder if people are preparing to go out and worried about how much weight they've gained.

.salsaqueen I looked up your meal plan as I hadn't heard of it. I did similar years ago and thought I'd never go back but now I may just. The drinks were filling.
I do 16:8. Lost 2.5 that .5 hase come back. I slip off course and struggle to get back.
Three of us, DH (chocaholic/cakeaholic) and DS. the positives are we seem to be giving each other space and eat together every evening. It's that meal though. DS now into baking. Bread yum yum
Seriously though I need to get a grip.
I'll be looking up the 'pear' thread

hendenali your post struck a chord inside me. I've been thinking of going to La Palma.
Plus your walks sounds so wonderful and good for the soul. I walk most days now - unless unwell- and enjoy being in a FB group called 'Walk every day for a year 2020'. I think you'd enjoy it!

Good for you on losing that half stone too. It doesn't sound much but makes such a difference. I put in on unfortunately

My neighbour, who is a nurse, has been telling everyone she can to NOT get overweight during lockdown (or to lose weight if they already are) as being overweight is a risk factor for serious complications or death (at any age) if a person catches Covid-19. (And looking at the photos of those who are younger who have died, that seems to be the case). So, perhaps the message is getting through and people are starting to diet? Either that, or as someone-else has said, they're not considered priority in food shops (and doesn't THAT tell us something for the future ??)

You're right, Mimigirl. We need to be kind to ourselves.

I tend to go off food if I'm stressed, so I'm eating smallish amounts of reasonably healthy food.
If I'm only a little bit stressed, I go for the chocolate and biccies, but that's not the case just now.

I’ve gained half stone in weight since lockdown. This is partly due to overeating and excessive snacking on crisps and chocolate. If I was to be entirely honest the weight gain is probably more down to over indulgence in alcohol and inactivity. I’ve found myself sitting around more on iPad and watching movies on Netflix and Prime. I’m not bothered as I feel many have turned to comfort eating and drinking too much when it is not the norm. I’m vegan so still manage to eat my daily requirement of fruit and vegetables. My main meal is always healthy. I’m not doing anything or worrying about losing weight until life gets back to whatever normality lies ahead for us. I think we need to be fair to ourselves in these troubled times and use whatever coping mechanisms we find helpful....

I'm finding it easier. I'm WFH so not getting home from work hangry and likely to eat anything in my path.

However, come 9pm, I'm gasping for a stiff drink. I don't normally drink alcohol much but a stiff Vodka Slush has become the highlight of my day. blushshock

Urmonstgran really not even a walk round the block in Spain? That must be the strictest in Europe! Sorry to be nosey but have you got your place there? Then there's not much else to do but eat!

No not dieting either.
I have an 18 year old step daughter who has Downs Syndrome and we have to watch her weight.
We/she buys diet/low fat cereal bars/ etc.
When shopping with her we noticed there was a massive shortage of the asaid items, but apparently people are buying them incase there is a bread shortage and they have a long sell buy date and ther are a substitute just incase.
That is what i was told by staff in Sainsburys and Tesco`s.
And that is clearly the case as it makes sense.
I don`t fancy egg on cereal bars myself haha.

I wish I had the willpower and motivation. I live alone and eat through boredom and for comfort. I recognise that this is a problem and was put on a waiting list last year to see a therapist for CBT. Goodness knows when that will happen now! I’ve learned more about my attitude to health, exercise and diet these last few weeks and, to be frank, don’t like what I see very much.

I'm afraid this is me...so I've got to get a grip with the food intake. ??

Laurensnan Sat 02-May-20 10:31:34

I'm like a couple of others on here. ... I've out on weight ?.

Gabriella you are not more likely to get Covid 19 if you are overweight. You are more likely to be seriously ill or die from covid 19 if you are obese and get it

luluaugust Sat 02-May-20 10:28:20

Food seems to have become one of the main interests in this house, the getting it, preparing it and eating do take up some of the long days, however, we are also walking a lot more and further than usual so just hoping for the best.

Craftycat Sat 02-May-20 10:27:44

What I cannot understand is why DH - who is overweight- has lost over a stone during these last few weeks & my weight hasn't shifted at all.
He is not at all active whereas I am- he eats all sorts of mad things ( crisps, chocolate, biscuits, fizzy drinks etc.) & I don't.
It is just not fair.
I suppose it is all down to hormones or something.

I started the thread ‘I’m a Pear’ and ‘I’m a Pear the sequel’ 2 years ago this coming Friday, VE Day. People have come and gone but we have a core membership who help each other through the ups and downs of weight loss.

We realise that we have a choice when we come out of Lockdown as to whether we have lost or gained weight and although we all have off days and binge days on the whole we are a great bunch of Losers ?

My partner (civil partnership) is stuck on the island of La Palma where we have a small apartment. She flew out a couple of weeks before me and lockdown in both countries stranded us both. I had put on quite a lot of weight from my 4 months of self indulgence over the winter there. I looked at the situation here for me and decided that I could either sink into depression and an excess of wine or use the time to make improvements to my health. I’ve always been healthy living aware but upped my game with this by carefully planning meals for nutrition and no waste. I’m lucky that I live in a small town and can walk straight out of my house into the woods and up on to the moors. I admit that I’m out walking more than I should be but I see almost no one and it is keeping me sane through this ghastly time. I walk through the bluebell woods early in the morning and on the hills after lunch. When it’s too wet to walk I do 30 minutes kettlebell exercises. I’ve managed to lose about 10 pounds and actually feel better than I have done for quite a while. I am a great fan of ottolenghi recipes and can spend several hours creating meals. It passes the time and I’m looking forward to getting back into my bikini when we can travel again.

I think it’s all the publicity about overweight people dying of Covid! Everyone overweight is terrified. The ‘covid diet’ is the most effective diet I’ve ever been on, Ive lost 6 kg and still losing. Only another 20 kg to go lol.

Juicylucy Sat 02-May-20 10:00:45

Oh I wish since lockdown being at home all the time I’m forever going to the fridge. I’m usually out at work now when I shop I’m treating myself to biscuits, scones sweets crisps. I’m a size 12 ( well I was). But the urge to fill trolley with treats as I can’t go anywhere is ridiculous but I can’t get out of the habit now.

Harris27 Sat 02-May-20 09:52:47

I’ve put on half a stone since lockdown and I’m overweight anyway. However if I had a date of going back to work I think it would give me that extra incentive to diet as I work with younger girls and they are mostly trim ha ha. Just need a push! We all said we would be obese or alcoholics by the time we returned!,,

Growing0ldDisgracefully Sat 02-May-20 09:51:19

No but I think I need to make a serious start! Myself and the fridge, wine bottle and food cupboard have become very closely acquainted ?. My usual forms of exercise are not available due to lockdown, and I just can't find any motivation or enjoyment in just walking the streets, so doing that has been a few and far between occurrence. Boredom and stress are my guzzling triggers and those are available in wholesale quantity just now. Sigh.

Cambia Sat 02-May-20 09:48:54

Teddl you are very good keeping the wine in the garage! We have two 3 litre pouches (one white one red) both in the house. Will move them now. At least the extra steps filling up a glass might help!!

Cambia Sat 02-May-20 09:47:05

Definitely put weight on during lockdown. I know it is the wine, the gorgeous bread and Greek cakes! I was seriously underweight in the summer last year as I was ill, so at the back of my mind, I am now thinking, well if I get ill I have half a stone to play!! No motivation there then! Haven’t been able to exercise this week as I fell and was quite sore. Come Monday, come the revolution.....IT fasting and back to everyday walking. Our lockdown is being lifted, so that will help greatly. No more excuses!

Froglady Sat 02-May-20 09:45:59

I seem to be doing the opposite and eating more high calorie snack food.

Tedd1 Sat 02-May-20 09:43:32

I've always been an emotional eater and a yo yo dieter so worrying about coronovirus and boredom is certainly not stopping me eating cakes ( shop bought!) biscuits and wine.
I even have a box with a tap on out in the garage!!
There is always the hope I might lose weight after lockdown!

vampirequeen Sat 02-May-20 09:40:00

I wasn't talking about foods made especially for dieters apart from sweetner. Mainly it's the healthy options that were missing or only had small amounts on the shelves.
