Are people dieting for when lockdown ends?

I only ask this question because when we went to Morrisons a lot of the dieting type foods were missing or the shelves were very run down. As some of you know DH and I have been losing weight for a while and whilst recently we've had problems getting our tinned pulses, there hasn't been an issue with sweetner and other 'diet' foods. In fact it's been easier because most people seem to have been on a treats binge. This time we couldn't get any own brand (cheap) granulated sweetner and had to pay for a brand sad. Also healthier snacks seemed to be in short supply. I wonder if people are preparing to go out and worried about how much weight they've gained.

Struggling as exercise makes me crave but nit exercising makes me gloomy!

Xx jane xx, good for you, you look fabulous ?
I don't have any scales (conscious decision), my clothes, some from years ago, still fit
I had to pull myself up two weeks ago, as I started to eat biscuits every afternoon, it just became a habit, a habit I needed stop
I had two decorative sweetie jars in the kitchen and I couldn't walk past them without shoving some in my gob, so I've thrown out the sweets and put the jars away
Desperate times...

As usual I lost weight in Lent and have managed to keep it off but it's an effort and I check my weight every morning. Now well within my weight range and I feel better and happier for it so it makes the effort worthwhile. Walks of several miles every day during lockdown are helping but I walk a lot anyway.

No Vampirequeen and Gemini I’m just a self confessed piggy.

Since Christmas I’ve put on 5lbs. I’ve always had a healthy appetite and a healthy diet.

My problem is if I get the slightest chance I sit.

That's wonderful Xxjanexx, especially as you've found a way to maintain your healthy lifestyle.

Xxjanexx….you are an inspiration. I'm using MFP too and, like you, nothing is banned but I tend to make better choices. I love the way MFP links to other apps like Map my Walk and Map my Ride so that it keeps a record of exercise as well as food. Did you eat your exercise calories? I've never felt the need to but I know some people on MFP do.

Xxjanexx you look fabulous! Well done and what a sensible way to do it. Congratulations x

Well done Greengran78. That's no mean achievement.

I had a hip replacement last May, and once I had recovered I vowed to lose my excess weight, for my health’s sake. Mainly by cutting out the excess cake, biscuits and chocolate, and walking more, I had lost 30lbs when the virus arrived. I have managed to maintain the loss, and hope to take off a little more. I only shop once a week, and just walk by the sweet stuff, telling myself “you don’t eat that anymore”. I seem to have lost my ‘sweet tooth’ to a great extent.
Despite being in the elderly at-risk group I take a long walk every day. As an incentive I am doing a ‘virtual walk’ of 140 miles, between Wigan and Whitby, and have completed almost 90 miles in two weeks.
Only yourself can decide that you have had enough of being overweight, and take the plunge into healthy eating. It’s well worth the effort, especially if it saves your life!

I’ve gone back properly on the 5:2, which I’d slightly slipped from in the last year or so. It’s much easier to maintain when stuck at home, and I figured it would be a good way of at least ensuring my weight didn’t skyrocket during lockdown (a very real risk); and of allowing myself to enjoy what I eat on the non-fast days without counting calories. I do think it’s important not to be too hard on ourselves during this difficult time. Also, it’s hard to express, but I tend to feel more well when I follow the 5:2: and we can all do with a bit of that at the moment. I’ve no great hopes of having lost a lot of weight, but I hope at least I won’t have gained too much.

Xxjanexx wow! That's brilliant!! You look fantastic. Well done.

DH and I joined Slimming World in January and we are still sticking to it and finding it quite easy. It's more to do with healthy eating than with being on a diet. You have to do a bit of meal planning but it's not difficult to do - even in lockdown. Actually it's probably a bit easier as you dont end up buying a lot of random ingredients. We also have a weekly Zoom group meeting which helps keep us on track. So far I've lost at least 1 llb a week. I'm taking it slow but sure - I've lost over a stone and aim to lose another 1 1/2 stone to reach my target weight.

Xxjanexx Sat 02-May-20 17:00:40

I hate the D word.
I have lost 12 stone by using the app my fitness pal.
I’ve done it slowly and have not noticed I have been eating less.
It’s easy to use even a scanner to scan your foods.
I’ve eaten what I want when I want!!
I just don’t go over my allocated calories for the day.

You don’t need to beat yourself up about not eating a certain something,
Just don’t cheat as the only person your cheating is yourself.

TwunLilly I confess...I went to an Endocrinologist privately. Twice. 1st a waste of space. Second saved and saves my sanity. He does NHS too so can switch over at some point. He writes to my GP who prescribes the T3 on his instructions.
Not cheap but for anyone who can pay this damn life long condition is worth it. All my bloods are on NHS too, just make sure to get them done in hospital which does the tests. All wrong being private but I wouldn't go back yet. Quality of life. I'm in SW London

Not dieting as such, but have been off bread for about 10 days now, since I suspected I had developed an intolerance and was eating too much, with luscious butter, anyway.

There’s been a significant difference - stomach has definitely deflated! (I won’t go into other effects) - even though I’m still eating other wheat products to some extent, e.g. pasta and a few biscuits.
Maybe it’s just the particular bread, the heavily seeded granary type, which we usually have - dh doesn’t really like any other.

We've skipped our low carb diet since the lock down and will resume soon as we are both putting weight on and not feeling as good as we were. We stopped due to the difficulty in getting some of the usual food we bought, but also because we had some naughty food left over from xmas that the grandchildren would have eaten and now they aren't visiting, well, we can't let it go to waste can we ( it's on our waists now).

Lesley60 Sat 02-May-20 14:32:52

Yes I’ve been on a sugar diet all through the lockdown, ? I can’t stop eating chocolate, cake and biscuits

Brigidsdaughter and Authoress I find fasting difficult sometimes because DH loves his food... and loves to nibble sometimes. I really struggle to say 'no' when he asks me if I want a snack - if he is going to have a snack. Sheer willpower to say no, because I know what he is having is ..... nice.

Having said that DH is a lot better than before the coronoavirus, hence his weight-loss. I think he takes inspiration from me when I refuse a snack because then he sometimes won't snack. It's a 2 way thing really.

To everyone else - if you are dieting: don't give up! Those who aren't dieting: you make me jealous! ?

TwinLolly Sat 02-May-20 14:15:29

Brigidsdaughter You are fortunate to have a GP to put you on a T3 combo. My GP only tests the TSH but never the other T's. I know that I have thyroid antibodies so I will be on lifelong thyroxine but it is frustrating when the GP doesn't request other T numbers.

Authoress Sat 02-May-20 13:55:15

@TwinLolly - good for you! I know how tough that is.

Authoress Sat 02-May-20 13:54:17

Well, I dunno about the losing weight to go out bit, but I'm running out of clothes that fit...

Brigidsdaughter Sat 02-May-20 13:15:44

TwinLolly I have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. 5 stone up - late diagnosis and death in family. Levo didnt work. Now on combo with T3.
Fasting only plan that works. I was pre diabetic, cholesterol borderline too. Last bloods back to normal. I'm struggling now but this thread has I inspired me.
Thank you all

I've been trying to fast and only eat an evening meal. Now and then I break my resolve with something small for lunch or a snack of fruit, and occasionally crisps or nuts.

DH has lost weight, which is good. (He was obese)
He is lighter than he has been in years. His GP gave him a goal to reach by the end of last year, which he was unable to make. He sent himself a goal and has just reached it now, which is 5kg more than the GP's goal. After reaching the GP's goal, he will set himself other weight goals. Obesity and diabetes runs in his family so he has to be really careful.

I put on quite a bit of weight over the years and since trying to fast, I've started to lose weight. I've not reached my goal - which is a bit hard because of menopause and also being hypothyroid and needing thyroxine. Hopefully my blood sugars coming down because I was borderline Type 2 diabetic.

Janiepops Sat 02-May-20 12:43:27

I started the Exante diet a week ago, and lost 7lbs! Hard to start with, hungry, headache, very “bunged up”, so belly ache, but all passed now, feel great. Weigh 16st and want to be about 10 or 11st. ( I’m 5’9”) no exercise at all, but will start some walking soon.
Think it’s a great to do in lockdown. Started as an ugly duckling, hoping a beautiful swan emerges 20 weeks later!!!???

loopyloo Sat 02-May-20 12:40:58

No but I should be. I could blame DH as he is home all the time and has a very sweet tooth but I eat when I am bored .I really must get my weight down because of my type 2 diabetes.
I really really guilty that I am not making better use of this time. Why am I not writing a best selling novel or clearing the junk out? Or doing something for charity?
Today I will make a start!

Brigidsdaughter Sat 02-May-20 12:36:06

Nankate I'll be joining, thanks for mentioning it.

The big issue with my half stone is that 2.5 was half my goal loss. Now I have nearly 3st to lose ?
