It's probably a family name but I wonder how Wilfred will feel when he is older

Maybe it's not uncommon in the circles he will move in

That was Trumpton, Blinko

Pugh, Pugh, Barney McGrew, Cuthbert, Dibble and Grub

I passed some of DS's old Beano annuals to the DGS. Comments have been made about how very un-PC some of the storylines are. Poor old Softy Walter had quite the time of it, bullied mercilessly and portrayed as very camp. blush

According to Wikipedia, he has dropped his soft personality, and now is ingenious, ambitious, intelligent. He still wants to suck all the fun out of Beanotown though.

Blinko Mon 04-May-20 15:28:22

Nico97 ah yes. I was thinking of the ...Cuthbert, Dibble and ...whatisname gang.

Pantglas2 Mon 04-May-20 13:06:05

Yes Callistemon I’ve done that, and yet my granddaughter so suits her name and is happy to be so very different that she wouldn’t seem the same with a common or garden name!

Callistemon Mon 04-May-20 13:01:00

Same here GrannyLaine

GrannyLaine Mon 04-May-20 12:54:56

I've had to do a bit of that Callistemon but the names have grown on me over the years !

Callistemon Mon 04-May-20 12:51:45

Does it matter to any of us what name anyone chooses for their baby?

It matters to the parents and to the child.
Even grandparents have to bite their lip and keep opinions to themselves except to say 'Oh, lovely'

Nico97 Mon 04-May-20 12:40:29

Cuthbert Cringeworthy was the soppy one in the Bash St class grin

Blinko Mon 04-May-20 11:56:18

Ah someone's heard of the the Bash St kids. I don't remember there being a Cuthbert, though. Wasn't he in another gang?

BradfordLass73 Mon 04-May-20 01:15:16

As you can see from the resemblance in these two photos, Daddy Boris, clearly a fan of Wilfred from the Bash St. Kids.
has immortalised his favourite character in his son.

Why is this our concern?

Oopsminty Sun 03-May-20 23:03:43

Grammaretto, I know a human Rex, Teddy, Prince and Dexter!

I also know a few dogs with human names. Mabel, Doreen, Nigel and Colin.

I think Boris's Wilfred will probably end up as Wilfie whilst young.

Then Wilf

I love the name Wilfred but I’m sure he’ll be Wilf. There’s an actor called Wilf in Game of Thrones. (I haven’t seen a single episode.)
Our next cat will be Stanley. (I’m not a fan of BJ despite all this.)

Glorybee Sun 03-May-20 21:29:54

There was a young chap one one of the Kirstie’s Homemade Christmas programs called Flynn. He was a lovely gentle boy and I really like that name, it’s interchangeable as a dogs name too!

Grammaretto Sun 03-May-20 21:21:22

Jabberwok grin

I wouldn't want to shout for my dog with a person's name - it might attract more than I bargained for!

Rex, Rover, Teddy, Prince, Spike, Dexter, Gnasher but not for children please.

annsixty Sun 03-May-20 21:00:54

I met a pug puppy recently at the vets whose name was Mabel, she was absolutely gorgeous.
My cat is named Molly.
What is wrong with naming a loved pet by a name you love yourself.

One of my GS’ S is named Alfie, I was not happy when told, now a few years later he is just... Alfie, no other name would suit him.

Jabberwok Sun 03-May-20 20:55:35

My daughters two dogs are called Stella and Iris! Her partners dachshund is called Eric!

Lucca Sun 03-May-20 20:20:10

I love it when animals have human names. I met such a nice Labrador recently called Dave. Ian hislop has a cat called Colin.

Callistemon Sun 03-May-20 20:12:38

I think people names and animal names are becoming more interchangeable.

Even Rex, an old name quite often used for dogs but then I remember Rex Harrison.

Callistemon Sun 03-May-20 20:08:46

Point taken Starblaze
Although DH always says I like to have The Last Word.
Funny that, I thought he did.

Callistemon Sun 03-May-20 20:06:38

I thought your name must be Gillian, very nice name gillybob. We have a Gillian in the family too.

My mum always called wallflower 'gillies' (soft g).

Of course, you could be Bob?

Treebee Sun 03-May-20 19:26:42

I approve.Wilfred was my Grandad’s name though he was called Wilf by my Grandma and Bill by everyone else.

lemongrove Sun 03-May-20 19:13:18

Oh I don’t know gillybob I think your name is lovely?

Names from the period around World War 1 seem to be really popular. Our grandads names, of course, Wilfred, Alfie Fred
Harry etc.
These are new names to many younger people.

Deedaa Sun 03-May-20 19:08:37

At least Wilfred has got off lightly compared with one of his other sons who has Apollo as a middle name! What goes through these people's minds? They're supposed to be naming a child, not a horse.

gillybob Sun 03-May-20 18:55:58

I don’t mind the name Wilfred . It wouldn’t be my choice but it’s not my baby . There are far worse names . Mine for example .
