Are you gambling on a slot?

Blooming 'eck. Just spent 25 mins looking at that revolving wheel telling me 'processing' when I was trying to checkout my next week's Sainsos order.
I never ever thought it would come to this.
Anyway. Plenty of choice for Wed pm and all day Thurs Fri Sat right now but they'll be gone in 5 mins or so.
Isn't it weird?
What's it like where you are.

Callistemon Sat 02-May-20 23:25:45

I think they should lock down everyone except those on that list.

Tippee!

Callistemon Sat 02-May-20 23:24:49

Who are these experts?

The obese are not on the list, of course not - the categories are stated in MawB's post of 22:26:49

There was another thread recently about people complaining they are not on this list but why on earth should anyone want to be in one of those categories?

Callistemon Sat 02-May-20 23:20:45

Rumours, suggestions etc.
I prefer facts.

No, over 70s have not been able to get preferential slots unless they cheated the system which was set up. They have always been allowed out to shop.
Even then, with a CMO letter, it was difficult to get a slot.

MawB Sat 02-May-20 23:19:38

For someone with “no idea” you seem happy enough dish out criticism to others without compunction or consideration for their circumstances or medical issues and to disseminate speculation about future restrictions.
I shall be interested to see whether Boris announces any lockdown for over 50’s next week ??

GabriellaG54 Sat 02-May-20 23:15:27

There are conflicting rumours, suggestions and previous guidance on elderly shoppers.
Sometimes they are classed with vulnerable customers on supermarket websites as being able to book slots and there have been many 'experts' both advising and saying that over 50s should stay in lockdown until Covid-19 is over, even going as far as to say that they should be fined if they cannot prove their age when challenged.
Even persons who are obese are classed as vulnerable.

Other 'experts' say that people over 70 are vulnerable due to their age, regardless of medical/medicinal needs and should self-isolate for 3 months.
How one is supposed to know for certain what course of action should be taken, I've no idea.

Callistemon Sat 02-May-20 23:12:01

Most over 70s I know who do not have medical conditions are going out at specific times to do their shopping at the supermarket. They are also going out for exercise for 1 hour.

Those of us who have a letter from their Chief Medical Officer have been told to stay at home for 12 weeks, ie until 16th June, therefore those who have had the letter need the grocery delivery slots that is why they have been prioritised.

Why can you not to to the supermarket if you are fit and able to go out for exercise such as horse riding? confused

We've managed to get a slot once a fortnight as we are unable to go out. Our neighbours and son have been kind enough to bring top-ups in between.

Why would one use precious resources such as 111 or take up a delivery slot if one doesn't need to?

annep1 Sat 02-May-20 23:07:33

Surely one slot per week is sufficient for anyone. People have been asked to stick to that. It seems logical as slots are limited and it leaves some free for others.

Having said that, if they want over 70s to isolate, then provision for food delivery needs to be made easier. What is the point of asking people to stay at home if they have to shop. We dont all have someone who can do it for us. And people are having to spend ages looking for slots. Many I know sit at midnight waiting for Tescos to release slots. Its utterly ridiculous.

I missed the pun ?

MawB Sat 02-May-20 23:07:29

Thursday, followed by Wednesday is not twice in one week unless the nits are really being picked.
Who knows? Maybe there weren’t any available on Thursday. None of your business to pontificate anyway.

MawB Sat 02-May-20 23:05:34

I’m not arguing either, just standing up for someone in the face of what, on another thread, is referred to as po-faced moralising

Dollymc1 Sat 02-May-20 23:00:55

Ringing 111?

GabriellaG54 Sat 02-May-20 22:59:11

If you order food for 7 days there is no need to order twice in one week. Most people have fridges and freezers.
Anyway, I'm not arguing and, with the utmost respect, the remark was not directed at you MawB ?

MawB Sat 02-May-20 22:58:07

Oh but snide and really did not need pointing out.
But tell me, one on Thursday, followed by one on Wednesday -exactly how many per week is that?

Hetty58 Sat 02-May-20 22:58:06

I've had most of my shopping delivered for years (back problems and I don't drive) so can't be expected to suddenly go in a supermarket - just because I'm not 70 yet. The milkman has prioritised existing customers, thank goodness (brings oat milk, basics and even compost). Cook stopped deliveries for a while, with only click/collect and I had to change veg box supplier, so won't use Abel and Cole again.

GabriellaG54 Sat 02-May-20 22:55:39

I was repeating what virtually every supermarket (on their website) asks us to do.

MawB Sat 02-May-20 22:45:52

Surely you are not begrudging Callgirl her slot on a Wednesday after one on a Thursday GabriellaG? That is indeed below the belt.
Callgirl has a disabled daughter living with her, needs a stairlift herself as she has restricted mobility and has recently fractured a vertebra.

MawB Sat 02-May-20 22:42:22

Suggestions are not announcements. Unless you are an Express, Daily Mail or Sun reader.

GabriellaG54 Sat 02-May-20 22:40:21

callgirl1
I understood that people were being asked to only book 1 slot per week to give everyone a chance of getting a home delivery.

GagaJo Sat 02-May-20 22:37:17

Its in all the papers Maw. Recommended by researchers.

Hetty58 Sat 02-May-20 22:31:50

Here in London local taxis will bring your click and collect shopping. The Co-op deliver a limited range of 'essentials' and ready meals at a couple of days notice, free of charge.

The NHS definition of “vulnerable” was never for all over 75’s
.This was the summary back in March
NHS England are seeking to contact all those ‘who have clinical conditions which are likely to put [them] at the highest risk of mortality and severe morbidity.’ These are: Solid organ transplant recipients People with specific cancers People with cancer who are undergoing active chemotherapy or radical radiotherapy for lung cancer People with cancers of the blood or bone marrow such as leukaemia, lymphoma or myeloma who are at any stage of treatment People having immunotherapy or other continuing antibody treatments for cancer People having other targeted cancer treatments which can affect the immune system, such as protein kinase inhibitors or PARP inhibitors. People who have had bone marrow or stem cell transplants in the last 6 months, or who are still taking immunosuppression drugs. People with severe respiratory conditions including all cystic fibrosis, severe asthma and severe COPD People with rare diseases and inborn errors of metabolism that significantly increase the risk of infections (such as SCID, homozygous sickle cell) People on immunosuppression therapies sufficient to significantly increase risk of infection People who are pregnant with significant congenital heart disease

I've got one this afternoon from Iceland for 6-8 am Wednesday. There was no choice. Just the one date and time popped up so I grabbed it.
The last one I had was from Sainsbury's but they give a date the following day and it can take a week to get it so is hard to plan. I've never had any luck with Morrisons or Waitrose but I am lucky in that all the supermarkets deliver here so I can keep trying. I prefer to be able to get fresh fish and a better choice of fresh vegetables but apart from the time it takes to get them, it seems that some people are having no luck at all, so I can't complain.

MawB Sat 02-May-20 22:21:16

I was not aware there had been any announcement today about “over 50’s being locked down for months “ but of course you may have your private sources of information .
There was certainly nothing to that effect in today’s CV briefing . In fact the move seems to be in the opposite direction with a limited easing of lockdown precautions confused

MawB Sat 02-May-20 22:16:51

I can’t believe you wasted 111 resources GabriellaG on a simple question to suit your shopping convenience!
It is meant to be. Health helpline for those who need medical advice , not your shopping preferences. Why not just ring 999 and get an ambulance to deliver while you are at it! ?

callgirl1 Sat 02-May-20 22:06:20

I managed a Tesco delivery last Thursday evening, and have managed to snaffle another for this coming Wednesday.

GabriellaG54 Sat 02-May-20 22:00:46

Yes kittylester, I'm 75 but the NHS guidance now is that 'vulnerable' only applies to people who have listed medical conditions, had organ transplants and/or compromised immune systems meds etc.
I rang 111 to ask why there is conflicting info being given.
I thought that over 70s were told to isolate for 3 months.
The senior nurse who gave me a call-back at...01.40 this morning ? said that new guidelines were being introduced as the needs of certain groups shifted.
Therefore, I can go out and do any shopping I like as I am not vulnerable.
Today, the tune changes and news is that over 50s may be in lockdown for months.
You can't win.
