Which do you prefer?

Our 3 piece suite is fabric. We bought it at least second hand 38 years ago for £25. It has been recovered 3 times since and is still going strong after 5 children in the house!

We had huge discussions about this when we were suite shopping a couple of years ago. Had leather for years and thought we'd make the switch to fabric ... mostly for the warmth of it. However, we ended up with leather again just because we liked the style of the couches. First time the wee grandson was here after getting the new ones, he wiped his sticky hands all over the arms and we were so glad we'd gone for leather again!
When the time comes round again, the kids will be beyond the mucky paws stage and we'll revisit the fabric option.

We bought a lovely cream leather suite when we moved house. It didn't take long to realise that cushions just slid all over it and when the cats sharpened their claws they left black pinpricks in the cream leather. The next suite was fabric!

Fabric for sofas generally, but a stylish leather chair in a room always looks good.

Fabric - with removable, washable covers!

I find leather sofas too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter.

Fabric. Never liked leather. It’s not a welcoming texture.

I find it very hard to find sofas I like tho, and my cats are ruining one I’ve got now which I love.

I think the leather looks much better on the cow where it belongs.

Hate our leather three piece brown leather. It too big and cold and not ergonomic too sit on. Told my husband he will never talk me into getting another one ever. My chair is covered in teddy throws from Dunelm.

Microsuede here too agnurse love it. Cleans easily and no sticking to it.

A mix of leather and fabric which I love. Best of both worlds.

Fabric. I hate leather, you slide about, any soft furnishings slide about, it’s either cold in winter or clammy in summer. It looks cheap, too, unless it’s top quality.

One of each.Decided we didn't want a traditional sofa and two chairs so got a very large fabric one which I lounge on .And a leather one that I like the look of but don't reallly like the feel of.Fortunately DH is happy to sit on that one and as a compromise he gets the best angle for the TV.

My last cat loved and ruined my leather chairs. I was either stuck to the leather in summer or slipped and slid on it in winter. I did not find it as comfortable as fabric because of the sliding around.

My present cat rarely scratches anything nowadays (because of her age) but I have everything covered with a washable cover and they can be whipped off if anybody visits and does not know me well.

I've had leather settees for several years. The ones we've got are dark brown, the previous ones were red. We got them originally as son no. 2 has got a dust mite allergy (Eczema and Asthma), and leather is so easy to keep clean.

I prefer leather and have just replaced my 14yr old leather sofa's with two new leather sofa's I hope to get as much use out of them as I did from the other ones we had which have gone to my DDs house they look as good as the day they where delivered all those years ago.

Fabric - loose covers in a neutral colour. They wash well and I much prefer fabric to leather. I think they never look cosy or relaxing. We experienced leather sofas at a holiday cottage in Northumberland and they were very slidy and cold. Of course I can totally understand why a holiday cottage would have leather though, much more durable. But in a domestic setting, fabric every time!

We've never had leather, but our current sofa is microsuede. It is amazing when it comes to cleanup - it doesn't stain. We have a flannel cover on it due to our having cats.

Fabric, daughter has leather and it’s always cold or else I stick to it.

FlexibleFriend Sun 03-May-20 14:16:44

I've only ever had one fabric sofa and since then we've always bought leather. I prefer the look and feel of quality leather and have never had a brown one. Had a few black ones and a blue one and the current one is aged grey. Never had a problem with anything sliding off or legs sticking. I also have dogs so leather tends to be more hygienic and easier to clean.

I'm not keen on leather sofas, a certain type of chocolate brown one seems to be in every other house whenever I look on Right Move. When my older son moved out to set up home, we gave him an old, but really nice small Chesterfield which had a lovely printed fabric which may have been a Liberty print, can't remember because my mother in law bought it for us a long time ago, but suffice to say I loved it, although it had seen better days. As soon as he could, almost immediately he got rid of it and replaced it with the ubiquitous chocolate brown leather sofas so beloved by the younger demographic and oh so boring! a must have along with the mahoosive wide screen telly sad

Definitely fabric for me.

Fabric all the way. We had a brown, antique leather armchair, gabriella which we just sold it because no one ever sat on it!

GabriellaG54 Sun 03-May-20 13:43:59

Fabric sofas. I do have a leather armchair, antique brown, a Mariners. Usually have a tweed and cream throw over one arm but it's not my fav chair. Back of thighs stick to it when wearing shorts.

I have leather sofa's....mine are about 13 years old now and have taken quite a battering over time but still look good.
I think I'd opt for leather again if buying.

HootyMcOwlface Sun 03-May-20 12:58:54

I always liked the look of leather, but I have two sofas now and definitely wouldn’t get leather again. They are cold to sit on in winter and all your scatter cushions slide off as well. My sister has one too, and her seat cushions slide forwards which is very uncomfortable and annoying (mine are fixed not loose so don’t do that).
