Why?

Do we almost always feel bound to include phrases such as 'making sure we are socially distanced', 'following social distancing guidlines' or similar nowadays?
I think we are all aware of our actions in that regard and what the guidelines are but still feel the need to verbalise (literally or figuratively) to others, our committment to keeping a safe distance.
I wonder why? Can we not take it for granted that GNs, for the most part, do 'obey' the rules?

I refer to phrases commonly used on GN.

Not sure we can take it for granted, there have been quite a few threads trying to find excuses for going against the guidelines.
I just wish we could use the more correct term, i.e. physical distancing, not social distancing.

When I read that it makes me think that they do not do it all the time so feel the need to say when they do.

When I read that I think the poster is just trying to stop 70 other grans from jumping on them.

By this stage of the game those of us who are trying to follow the guidelines already know we need to distance ourselves from others (physically or socially) and don't need reminding.

Those who don't care are not going to listen, or not going to let on that they do what they want.

Suzzanah
Exactly what you said in your first sentence.

Beechnut Wed 06-May-20 17:38:56

SuzannnahM your first sentence, wouldn’t be SD or PD ?? they would just be squashed?

Urmstongran Wed 06-May-20 17:53:24

Actually you’re right Gabriella. I’m going to stop using the phrase. As you say we do all know we ought to be doing it by now. I won’t say it anymore. Let’s see if I get jumped on haha!
?

I’m just as sick of listening to those on the tv telling us these are ‘unprecented times’ ‼️

GrannyGravy13 Wed 06-May-20 17:58:25

What Urmstongran says!

Grannynannywanny Wed 06-May-20 18:44:51

Yes Urmstongran I agree.
There are a few phrases on tv beginning to grate on me..

Ramping up

New normal

National effort

Maybe I’m listening to too many news updates. Or maybe I’m just a grumpy old b*** today

I don't think I'll ever be comfortable being close to strangers again. Maybe time to drive a car again.
I actually prefer peace. No noisy bars cafes with all the attendant noise especially from outside seating in summer. No bumping into other crowds in shops.
I like how it is now but with more outdoor time.

Beechnut Thu 07-May-20 06:36:09

I’m not keen on crowds which is why even with my supermarket shops I go as early as I can.

DH and I are irritating each other one purpose by saying 'is that your new normal' whenever the other does something however trivial- juts our little lockdown joke. smile
