Any ideas about what to do with my fringe!!! It is so long now and i am afraid to try cutting it. Last time i did it it looked awful, i am currently just twisting it up then pinning back off my forehead but it really doesnt suit me. Anyone come up with ideas for fringes??

I'm always having to trim mine, I do what others have said, cut into it a tiny bit at a time.
Last week I decided the rest of it needed a trim so I combed it all forward over my face and, with head hanging down I snipped about half an inch off. It looks ok and will have to do until I can see hairdresser again.
Not so successful with my highlights though, I now resemble Boris!

Yes I trim mine and colour it...just cut a little at a time when dry and then hold scissors vertically and snip into it a bit so it doesn’t looked chopped off!

Oh GabriellaG54 you are hilarious I love your posts ???

I just look in the mirror after I’ve washed my hair, get the hairdressing scissors and chip into the fringe, I don’t have a clue what I’m doing, nor do I care really, it’s the least of my worries as no ones going to look at me, it turned out ok, but I did have an idea if it didn’t I could start a new trend by using pinking shears!

I occasionally cut my fringe by doing as Wibby suggests - gathering it to a point and then gradually cutting the end off.

If there is an odd stray hair that you don't like the look of once you've done this, use nail clippers to snip it off.

I have not had problems using this method.

I did mine yesterday as driving me mad going in my eyes and cut it outside with wet comb and sharp scissors and hey presto no longer looking like a shaggy sheep dog and can see where I am going. Result!

I only cut my hair on holiday. Situation now dire as I was going on holiday just when lockdown started. I have crocheted some headbands. Thinking about shaving it off.

I tie a scarf round my hair 1940s style. I have quite fine hair. I also use small claw clips to hold it back by twisting and clipping it. I am ok cutting front. Would never attempt back....my hairdresser showed me what I did once before when I tried. Never again...

I cut mine after watching a YouTube video. As others have said, twist it round then cut the ends off. This gives a more feathered look.

How about a clip? Do you like your fringe or could you use it as chance to grow it out? I grew mine out after forty years with a fringe☺️

What a mean spirited comment hetty58!

LinAnn52 Sun 10-May-20 11:49:01

I have taken to clipping the long fringe over to the side. I don’t really suit it, but only DH sees it. I think this may be the year I stop having my hair coloured and take the plunge by letting it go grey. It will mean a very short cut though which I’m not sure about!

Just do it. Nobody is going to notice - or care if it's not salon perfect.
I honestly hope that these few weeks without access to hairdressers, beauty therapists and nail bars will see a reduction in the level of vanity.

Caro57 Sun 10-May-20 11:52:37

I asked DH to cut the back of my hair as it was tickling my neck. Talk about bull in a china shop - to top it all off after the deed he announced I looked like Grayson Perry - it will take a while to recover from that comment!

maryhoffman37 Sun 10-May-20 12:11:33

I've done it once and used the sharp scissors snipping up into it method. Also did the sides and it didn't turn out too badly.

travelsafar Sun 10-May-20 12:47:26

Lol i have done it using advise given here. I twisted and chopped. It doesnt look tooo bad,at least i can see now!!! It really needs thinning out as very heavy but that i will not attempted. Thanks for all the tips everyone. smile

Most people are having hair ‘problems’ so I’m just embracing the ‘mad old lady’ look. I’m certainly not going to join the rush when my hairdresser reopens - I’ve put up with it for 7 weeks or so, a few more and it could be interesting.

I always cut my fringe, have done for years. Just never do it when it's wet and if you've got hair as thick as mine, chop into it after you've got the length more or less right so it's not a solid lump but has some definition. That way, it doesn't matter so much if it's not perfectly straight.

Lizbethann55 Sun 10-May-20 13:12:45

I wonder how Claudia Winkleman is doing? I have often wondered what "bangs" were. Is it an American word for fringe? The front of my hair flicks up when it gets too long and I hate it! It has just started to flick. It is family zoom this afternoon, so I may try these trimming hints after zoom time so it will have a week to grow out as I will probably make a total mess of it. I have absolutely no spacial awareness when looking in a mirror

My DH normally goes to the barber regularly and has most of his lovely silver hair cut off.
Now of course he can’t.
His hair is lovely and thick and he looks 10 years younger.
I have suggested that when things get back to normal he just gets the back cut

Juicylucy Sun 10-May-20 13:46:34

Google” how to trim a fringe “ and you will get videos showing you the easiest best way.

gillyknits Sun 10-May-20 14:53:13

I’ve just cut my hair really short. It grows so thick, that it’s unmanageable.I haven’t a clue what it really looks like at the back, but the front is fine! ??

Nanna58 Sun 10-May-20 15:30:06

Just chipping into the fringe to keep the sheepdog look at bay, but may use the slightly longer hair to choose a different style when eventually back at hairdressers. One thing I couldn’t live with was grey, never coloured myself before . I would definitely recommend the Josh Wood website, very in-depth online consultation to pick colour, you can buy from them direct and I was truly delighted with the result.

Brush hair back - it covers the ‘badger’ look that shows with a parting when roots need doing - and slide a hairband in. That’s what I’ve been doing. I just wish I had lovely thick hair. It’s on my shoulders now and SO fine. It reminds me why I don’t grow it this length!

Rosina Sun 10-May-20 16:00:08

I do the twist and snip method - works quite well. The great thing is though that even if you do mess it up - it grows!
