Great post Emilymarie.

lemongrove Tue 12-May-20 14:07:27

Haha Smileless I think ‘tis you who has the bonus point and not Maizie ?

Smileless2012 Tue 12-May-20 14:02:41

I'm not sure Gabriella but I'm pretty certain Eve said it to the serpentgrin.

GabriellaG54 Tue 12-May-20 13:48:07

Didn't Nero say that to Caeser or did David say that to a lion? ??

lemongrove Tue 12-May-20 13:42:35

.....and before that Winston Churchill said that to somebody,
And before that Queen Victoria said it of somebody else.?
How far back shall we go with this?

Maremia Tue 12-May-20 13:35:23

If you are worried about yourselves, or your youngsters, going back to work in a situation where COVID prevention preparations have not been made e.g. proper PPE, plastic barriers, enough hand sanitation and much, much more, advise them to join a union asasp. The union can take the flack, if they need to complain. If they make the complaint themselves, they run the risk of being sacked. Yes, this has happened.

MaizieD Tue 12-May-20 13:29:26

I make that one all, Jabberwok.
But Eddie Mair got it in first... March 2013. So a bonus point to me..

Jabberwok Tue 12-May-20 12:14:39

That's as may be but Anna Sourbry certainly made the same comment to John McDonnell on the 16th Sept 2016 during Question Time.

trisher Tue 12-May-20 10:59:23

Nanna58 I know and add to that the effort of trying to social distance them and not touch them!!!! I did Reception a couple of times in my career and coped (just) but it left me with everlasting respect for those who did it year in year out. And were brilliant at it.

In regard to those enquiring as to my style of writing in my posts on this forum, I can assure them that only I ever type or use voice recognition to make those posts.

In regard to using a formal style of writing that is without doubt because much of what I type or dictate in the course of my work has to be formal as those documents often go forward to company employee disciplinary or grievance hearings or the Industrial Courts (industrial tribunals).

The Legal Secretaries in the company always proofread all documents I and others compile before adding their own findings to such documents. They always write very formally and therefore I always TRY to emulate that so as not to give them to much work in editing my documents.

At home and for this forum, I do try to write less formally, but as some have noticed after spending at times all day writing in a formal manner I do not always succeed, or it comes out as a mixture of the two. ?

Anyway, coffee break over, back to the working grindstone.

Nanna58 Tue 12-May-20 10:52:39

If you don’t like someone commenting on things not directly said to them don’t post on a public forum GabriellaG. Oh dear, I seem to have done just what you so dislike....

It is just as well that Starmer only had 6 minutes to question Johnson. As it was Johnson failed to reply to a single question posed to him from the wording in the 50 page document.

This is the prime minister for gods sake. We are all entitled to expect him to at the very least answer to the document he has apparently produced.

Interestingly the scientists have made it clear that they were not consulted before the various stages were decided on, so Johnson is being guided only by himself.

MaizieD Tue 12-May-20 10:42:13

Whoops, I got the wrong post, GG54

It's the 09.33 one. Quite horrible and completely uncalled for. Not even your 'quarrel'...

MaizieD Tue 12-May-20 10:39:21

No Jabberwok. It was said by Eddie Mair to Boris Johnson a few years ago. I expect I could find a video clip of it if you want confirmation.

Lucca Tue 12-May-20 10:36:17

It was said to Boris Johnson. I watched that. (The nasty piece of work remark)

I think it was a good analogy. No nasty words in that post or allusions to anyone in particular, unlike yours to me.
It takes all sorts. You are just one.

Nanna58 Tue 12-May-20 10:19:57

Trisher, I loved your post! As a Reception teacher for many years, I used to watch with interest as those who opted for this year group( we were 3form entry) “ because it’s a doddle isn’t it? ) were virtually nervous wrecks well before the Spring term! ?

Jabberwok Tue 12-May-20 10:19:47

I think you'll find that was said by Anna Sourbury to John McDonnell on Question Time!

Jabberwok Tue 12-May-20 10:17:13

To those who can't seem to understand what Boris is telling us, surely to God you can understand the professional people standing either side of him, people he defers to and back up what he is saying in simple, baby language that my 10 year old grandson can understand?! Boris did say that as from today we can relax a little over outside exercise (the scientists backed him) next week certain of us can go back to work with provisos, cautiously and carefully. Rogue employers are to be reported. Use common sense, ask if you are unsure! What's so difficult not to understand? Incidentally our refuge collectors have been and are working through this pandemic, with two of them in the lorry as usual so presumably other people can also devise similar ways to work collectively and safely!

MaizieD Tue 12-May-20 10:09:34

Your post at 09.40

In the well known words of a TV interviewer to Boris Johnson "You are a nasty piece of work, aren't you?"

trisher Tue 12-May-20 10:00:42

I see that the guidelines now say no more than 15 children in a reception class - that's a bit of new information. Quite who is going to take the classes hasn't been decided I suppose, because of course reception class teachers can be anyone can't they? it's not a specialist area at all. It's all been so well thought out hasn't it?!!!

Nanna58 Tue 12-May-20 09:53:16

Please feel free to use the word ‘ one’ if you wish Gabriella G, no need to change your usual vernacular in order to converse with the rest of us! And I was merely commenting on, , not criticising, your idea that couples should think through cast iron contingency plans for childcare, including foreseeing a totally unprecedented pandemic, and if ( surprise, surprise!) they were unable to do so forego from having children!!!

MaizieD Tue 12-May-20 09:53:14

I have just watched the ten o clock ITN News at Ten.
As clear as day it was said that workers who cannot work from home should return to work on Wednesday.

Aah, but, maddyone, the News at 10 on Monday evening ias not the speech that Johnson made on Sunday evening. About which you asserted, three times on this thread (and, apparently on another thread) that Johnson had said, in his speech, that people should go back to work from Wednesday.

Here you are saying it (just to refresh your memory) date and times. Well before the News at 10

Mon 11-May-20 11:32:24
I agree with you all. I didn’t find the speech confusing because it wasn’t confusing. If you can’t work from home you can go back to work from Wednesday. Not today. Wednesday.

Mon 11-May-20 11:46:25
Daisymae
Boris said yesterday to return to work on WEDNESDAY.
If you can’t work from home and if social distancing measures have been put in place.

Mon 11-May-20 12:18:28
I’ve been fighting this battle on two threads. I listened to the speech. BJ said people can return to work on Wednesday. I don’t understand why people are saying they can go to work today! They can’t because he said Wednesday,

Would you like me to also repost the transcript from Johnson's speech when he DOESN'T say it?

Of course, I realise that it's easy to get confused when you hear something that wasn't actually said... A bit 'meh' to patronise other people for doing it, though.
