Well, whaddya think?

I thought he came across very well. No long words. No faffing. Plain and simple.

GabriellaG54 Sun 10-May-20 20:35:44

Family is family. Household is household.
It's possible to watch it all again on iplayer if you can, on TV or phone.
I will re-watch and come back to you here with the definitive answer in his words. ???

NfkDumpling Sun 10-May-20 20:40:08

I thought it was a very good speech and far more generous than I’d expected. If the full thing is 50 pages or whatever he couldn’t have said all that. We’ll find out the details over the next few days. Including what’s happening about those of us who’re shielding. I suspect nothing. I’d like it if we could be allowed out for an hours exercise, but I’m not holding my breath!

Pittcity Sun 10-May-20 20:42:53

My family is a finite number Gabriella but my DDs and siblings have in laws and so on. My grandsons have cousins who are not my family....where do you draw the line?

lemongrove Sun 10-May-20 20:43:32

Saetana ??Excellent post.

Johnson was clear, no waffle at all.The thanking of the public was important, and was meant to them onside as well.
No great sudden changes and a softly softly approach is the right one just now.
Anyone wanting more clarity can watch proceedings from Westminster tomorrow.

Summerlove Sun 10-May-20 20:44:47

Gg54, you made it sound like family outside your household. Surely anyone you visit also has in-laws to visit, and they have inlaws to visit. So can quickly add up.

As far as keeping infection rates low, I really do not see a difference between visiting family outside their house, or visiting your neighbours outside theirs.

You’re absolutely correct about some people being hard work though.

Thanks for kindly correcting My misunderstanding of your poor wording

Having seen it again on iplayer, he said, household, not family. Members of your household...IOW living with you. Play sports, picnic, drive to other places as much as you like (not verbatim)

rosenoir Sun 10-May-20 20:47:09

I think Saetana has stated what was said clearly and simply.

Not understanding and not liking are not the same thing.

Tillypuppy Sun 10-May-20 20:49:19

If we can now drive anywhere to exercise will people now head to the coast and national parks in high numbers putting small villages and holiday areas at risk?

GabriellaG54 Sun 10-May-20 20:49:36

Summerlove
Thanks for being kind when I pounced ?

GabriellaG54 Sun 10-May-20 20:52:13

Pittcity
Household is what he said.
People living with you in the same property.

Totally disagree with Plain and Simple. It was so open to misinterpretation and a potential second peak.

He said he'd talked to all countries: Scotland, Wales and Ireland. No evidence of that. How come none are following his plan?

Cornwall is dreading what will happen with the 1000s of people driving here for "a day out".

Sparklefizz Sun 10-May-20 20:53:20

Saetana The media have been incredibly irresponsibly this week, and throughout the entire pandemic come to that, giving people the false impression that lockdown was going to be dramatically eased next week. Boris is being cautious, as he should be, and did point out that lockdown could be tightened as well as loosened if the number of infections and deaths start rising again.

Totally agree. I thought he said what needed to be said in a clear and concise fashion with illustrations to clarify his points. What's not to understand?

(Also I thought he was looking better.)

Sparklefizz Sun 10-May-20 20:56:12

People have said that they don't want to be treated as children, so now is their chance to act responsibly and not go driving off to the coast and far-flung villages and holiday places.

Now is the time to understand that we face a 2nd peak if we're not sensible.... if we didn't already get that.

lemongrove Sun 10-May-20 20:56:57

How would any of us know if Johnson and his Ministers had or had not talked to the devolved administrations?!
In any case, the government here would not force anything onto Scotland Wales or NI that they were strongly against.
I don’t think any of their plans are much different to those for England really.

lemongrove Sun 10-May-20 20:58:44

Luckily, the weather has really changed now, and will keep people close to home .No temptation in wind and rain for parties in the back garden.

NfkDumpling Sun 10-May-20 20:59:46

DGS is slightly autistic and has problems with social distancing which was causing difficulties at school because he got too close. Social distancing is perfect for him. He’s learnt that he has to leave the distance of daddy laying down around himself and others. He doesn’t have a problem with that. He’s six.

NotAGran55 Sun 10-May-20 20:59:52

I need to listen again , but can anyone clarify what he said about driving? Was it related to exercise?

Luckygirl Sun 10-May-20 21:00:11

What of the over-70s? - I did not listen to the statement (Young Musician woodwind final won out - surprise surprise!) but have read the reports, and, after this relaxation of exercise rules, it simply said 70s and over should stay at home - so do we assume that none of it applies to us at all? That is how I read it. Much as I expected, and I have no gripe about it, but just wondered if he made specific mention of the 70s+.

eazybee Sun 10-May-20 21:00:27

The speech was clear and incisive, but emphasising the need for extreme caution. A gentle, slow approach to lifting lockdown, but one to be carefully monitored.
What on earth were some people expecting?

NfkDumpling Sun 10-May-20 21:00:31

He’s looking forward to going back to school.

NfkDumpling Sun 10-May-20 21:02:07

I pressed enter too soon again before I’d finished! I was trying to say that we should give teachers a chance. I assume this would have been discussed with them before they decided what ages to send back.

NfkDumpling Sun 10-May-20 21:03:54

He made no mention of over 70s Lucky or Shielders.

Birdwatcher4 Sun 10-May-20 21:10:40

No I don’t think you missed anything Maw B I agree with you . telling people they can go out more be it supposedly for excise will just have young people roaming around ... the do and can’t do,s are just not clear or strongly worded enough in my opinion.

WOODMOUSE49 Sun 10-May-20 21:12:46

lemongrove. I must have watched a different news (following BJ's speech) tonight. Their plans were quite different for the next few weeks,

To quote BJ: I have consulted across the political spectrum, across all four nations of the UK.
I believe that as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom – Scotland, England, Wales, Northern Ireland, there is a strong resolve to defeat this together.

And today a general consensus on what we could do.
