If we want to be treated as grown ups, then the situation is this: there is no vaccine ( and won’t be for a long time) but careful management means the NHS can cope with us in hospital if we are ill but nothing can guarantee that we won’t actually die.If we are old, and especially if we have any underlying health conditions, then we need to take extra care.
That means getting shopping delivered to us, staying home as much as possible and maintaining distancing with family and friends and neighbours.Getting some fresh air and exercise by gardening, or taking a walk when we feel we need to or cycling. As we are grown ups, that also means making sensible decisions on our own behalf.
The only people who don’t understand all this are the selfish, the dim and the arrogant.

oscaro11 Sun 10-May-20 21:18:57

Totally agree lemon grove. It’s about taking responsibility for yourself.

Blinko Sun 10-May-20 21:19:13

Sorry if I'm being dim,but what if your family doesn't live in your household? Can we still drive some distance to see them?

confusedI expect all will become clear in the next few days as the bones are picked over and analyzed.

Blinko Sun 10-May-20 21:20:55

OH felt 'inspired' by BJ's speech. I'm awaiting further info.

Thanks Gabriella

I think some are under the impression that a lot of people are working when they are not. Someone said the construction workers have always been at work. Not true. My relatives in construction have been on lockdown from the start. Sometimes too it is not just about social distancing but that the companies who supply materials had shut down. Blinko
it is only family in your own household that can drive out together and not you driving out to see other family members from other households.

notanan2 Sun 10-May-20 21:41:50

the tradespeople I know have all worked throughout. They just switched from domestic to commercial but still did some emergency domestic.

It wasnt the same work but they still worked. Just going to sites rather than peoples houses.

they can now do the domestic work again if they can do it safely with distancing etc.

Thanks for the link Lisa

I feel that the whole of the U.K. should be using the same approach and that BJ has been pressurised to relax the rules prematurely.

The interview Nicola Sturgeon gave immediately after listening to BJ was far more impressive.

As I have said on here before, having different rules in the different countries which make up this nation makes as much sense as having a peeing section in a swimming pool!

notanan2 Sun 10-May-20 21:44:43

the ones who do maintenance work in nursing homes where stopped which I thought was bazarre. They had already been there up to that point and if they had been allowed to stay they could have put in room dividers etc to make it safe for isolating residents but the NH managers let them go (and then blamed the government for not being able to manage).

Calendargirl Sun 10-May-20 21:44:51

Not sure why the first schoolchildren to return will be the little ones, I would have expected secondary school age to be more sensible re social distancing etc., but I presume it’s because the youngsters need childcare.

Also to those who keep on about how it all relates to family, it was households he was talking about, exercising together. Don’t think families were mentioned were they?

MayBee70 Sun 10-May-20 21:46:34

'We can drive to other places and socialise with family only, but still keeping social distancing. '
...I must have missed that bit. Another problem for police because it's a bit ambiguous confused.

notanan2 Sun 10-May-20 21:46:42

Hospitals had their maintenance teams working overtime to put in extra isolation measures and NHs let theirs all go.

MayBee70 Sun 10-May-20 21:47:25

Oh and he said it 'could' have been a catastrophe'. I'm afraid I think it is one sad.

Ellianne Sun 10-May-20 21:54:53

Jillybird 20.46 yours is the most insightful comment about the ages of children returning to school I have read.

Oopsminty Sun 10-May-20 21:55:57

We can drive to other places and socialise with family only, but still keeping social distancing. '

I believed that the mixing with family was basically just mixing with your household

Did I get that wrong?

Blinko Sun 10-May-20 21:56:50

Thank you JellyBee. I did think that was the case, after all 'household' is not necessarily the same as 'family'....

Espee, ....makes as much sense as having a peeing section in a swimming pool! Lol!

MawB Sun 10-May-20 22:06:49

From the BBC News web site
Mr Johnson said people in England could now sit in the sun in the park providing they observe social distancing and drive to other destinations to exercise. Previously, people were asked to only exercise outdoors once a day, and not sunbathe
Two people from different households would be allowed to meet in a park if they stay more than two metres apart, the BBC understands, while it is also thought sports like golf, tennis, fishing and outdoor watersports will be allowed for people in the same household.

NfkDumpling Sun 10-May-20 22:08:13

Looking at Lisa’s link of the speech in full I couldn’t see anything about meeting family.

Just - “You can sit in the sun in your local park, you can drive to other destinations, you can even play sports but only with members of your own household.”

MawB Sun 10-May-20 22:08:55

I do not think there was any mention of socialising with one’s family That would suggest popping round to Grandma’s for Sunday lunch which is still a definite no-no!

NfkDumpling Sun 10-May-20 22:09:47

I think perhaps the Beeb has had a sneaky peek at the detailed documents to be released tomorrow.

Waterloosunset Sun 10-May-20 22:13:24

MawB beat me to it, I was just about to cut and paste the same thing....
The BBC understands that the changes in the guidelines will mean two people from different households would be able to meet while sitting more than two metres apart in a park.

I don’t understand because that it is not what I thought BJ said.

EllanVannin Sun 10-May-20 22:17:22

Clear as mud !

Sparkling Sun 10-May-20 22:22:11

Brilliant speech, I could see him rousing his groups into battle..I do think we need more definite directives as really people are being asked to be responsible and sensible but many are not. I think for a lot of people to be ready for work tomorrow and get there by bus if they can’t drive and it’s too far to walk would be Extremely worried by the new guidelines. Also where does that leave over 70’s?
