Well, whaddya think?

I thought he came across very well. No long words. No faffing. Plain and simple.

I can quote from German, Spanish, Italian, Swedish, American and Dutch newspapers, all shocked at what is happening in the UK.

It is nothing to do with hindsight and everything to do with disbelief at the UKs governments incompetence.

NfkDumpling Wed 13-May-20 19:39:39

Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

MayBee70 Wed 13-May-20 19:30:07

And can you honestly condone the UK government for allowing 3,000 people to fly in from a covid hotspot when our initial outbreak was probably caused by British people returning from Italian ski resorts. By the Saturday of that week New Zealand had already locked down the whole of the country.

MayBee70 Wed 13-May-20 19:26:19

Well, for a start they were Spanish and not Italian.

notanan2 Wed 13-May-20 19:21:44

well why did they come? if apparently everyone in their country was looking at us aghast?

MayBee70 Wed 13-May-20 19:16:53

Why did we allow fans from Atletico Madrid come here to Liverpool for a match when matches in their own country were being held behind closed doors?

Lucca Wed 13-May-20 18:12:24

Maybee absolutely right. My friend in Italy couldn’t believe action was not being taken early on. She kept saying you are only a couple of weeks behind us. (This is someone with medical background )
I had to tell her I agreed but sadly has no say in the matter.

notanan2 Wed 13-May-20 18:12:11

Italy has porblems with organised crime picking recruiting business people who werent supported by government in initial lockdown (and credit to them they are now trying to retrospectively rectify that)

Irish key workers STILL have no childcare provisions and have had to call in sick, take leave or get relatives who should be shielding to help. They went into lockdown with no plan as to how lockdown would work, and although in the last couple of weeks SOME keyworkers childcare has been sorted, many still have none.

We didnt get everything right. Nobody did. But where other countries press is telling them how much betterthey are at it than us, ours isnt really highlighting our comparative successes.

I dont think its a bad thing that our press CAN be so critical. But when people read it from abroad it gives a worse impression when compaired to their "look how great we are" press.

MayBee70 Wed 13-May-20 17:59:46

Even if Italy are reporting it in a different way I seem to remember the Italians begging us to see what was happening in their country and to take action. Which the government ignored. Had they done so those wonderful social provisions might not have been needed.

MayBee70 Wed 13-May-20 17:45:46

So what is your opinion on how Portugal are dealing with it? Compared to us.

notanan2 Wed 13-May-20 17:39:31

Overseas media is full of "LOOK HOW MUCH BETTER WE'RE DOING THAN THE BRITS" (even if theyre not doing well at all.

Not seen many write ups on how much better we are doing than Belgium, or how the countries who are claiming to do so much better than us are reporting in a completely different way. Or how other countries lockdown made no extra social provisions and we actually did that better than most.

lemongrove Wed 13-May-20 16:23:19

In any case, where would GN be if all that was reported were a few facts here and there. With a spread sheet to back it all up.

lemongrove Wed 13-May-20 16:20:46

WWM2.....ah, come on ,you have opinions on every subject under the sun usually!

lemongrove Wed 13-May-20 16:19:05

The Scottish accent is (mainly) great, in my view, I could listen to it for hours, so no, it isn’t La Sturgeon’s accent.....it’s her tone and her words! So....’stitch that Jimmy’ is quite appropriate in my opinion ( and I am allowed them) wink

Whitewavemark2 Wed 13-May-20 16:15:32

No not at all, but I am impressed by your immense level of expertise on nearly every subject under the sun.

I feel very humble when reading it all.

lemongrove Wed 13-May-20 16:15:07

notanan do keep your no nonsense posts up ?not universally liked because others have an agenda, ( quite often one which frowns upon anything English) either Scots Nat perhaps or very left wing.
Why would anyone believe what they read in the newspapers/media from other countries, when they hardly believe a word of anything said in the British press.Crazy.

MayBee70 Wed 13-May-20 16:13:55

I've heard many things said about The Sun but unpatriotic certainly isn't one of them.

notanan2 Wed 13-May-20 16:10:32

Is there anything that you don’t claim to be expert on notanan?

Oh sorry, is yours the only opinion allowed?

Whitewavemark2 Wed 13-May-20 16:09:42

I see that they have picked up on the lies told by Johnson today at PMQs. That isn’t bias it is fact.

What an embarrassment though.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 13-May-20 16:07:52

Is there anything that you don’t claim to be expert on notanan?

What I have been reading is quite accurate as far as I can see and from quality news outlets.

Perhaps we can compare some of what we have read recently?

notanan2 Wed 13-May-20 16:03:38

Due to Englands past a lot of overseas press prefer to report bad news from England than good

I too have (and always do) followed overseas media and it has been beyond biased. But it always is.

Friends from overseas thought we werent locked down at all when we were, and were getting reports that BJ is universally unpopular (its a mixed bag) and everyone here was on the tip of riots!

Couple that with the fact that BRITISH press is far less patriotic in its own reporting. Reading other countries main press you would think everyone was happy and proud of their great efforts while friends on the ground report otherwise.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 13-May-20 15:57:26

I have been reading the opinions of the various news outlets throughout the world of the U.K. and in particular the Johnson government.

Without exception it is critical and makes for very sober reading.

notanan2 Wed 13-May-20 15:40:02

Personally I think NS could easily have delivered her message to scotland without being critical of BJs message to England.

But she didnt
And she sounded like a toddler "I told him not to put it on MY telly"
was that necessary? did it clarify any of HER points? no!
Ensure the ads are adjusted regionally, yes! but it didnt have to be in her speech.

You can say we are doing things differently without saying theyre wrong and we're right.

meanwhile human rights are being erroded in scotland under her watch (proposed hate speech act).. but whatever, she knows all she has to do to stay popular is to be anti english

MayBee70 Wed 13-May-20 15:36:25

Bus/train seats were supposed to be sealed off so people couldn't sit next to someone else. Masks should be made mandatory on public transport and they should be made freely available for people that don't have one. In some countries when you visit a supermarket you have to stick to social distancing, hand sanitiser is squirted on your hand as you enter; people disinfect each trolley after use etc etc. This is being done in poorer countries I believe so I don't understand why it can't be done here. I think temperatures are taken also. My son tells me that the company he works for has people thoroughly cleaning toilets after each us [another way the virus is transmitted but rarely mentioned; enclosed space etc etc ]. There is far more that can be done in this country. And lockdown should not have been loosened until people were using apps and we had contact tracing in place. This government is using people as guinea pigs and they'll be using children and teachers too soon; unless the unions get involved which I think they are doing.

Wheniwasyourage Wed 13-May-20 15:22:32

What FarNorth said (again).
