Well, the solstice will still happen so I bet there’ll be quite a few people coincidentally just happening by at the same time. Being alert to keep the approved distances of course.

Beechnut Tue 12-May-20 06:39:22

The sun will still rise ?

NotAGran55 Tue 12-May-20 07:21:20

If they all stay 2m apart and walk around they could all say they are meeting up with one other person from a different household in an open space for exercise smile

Last thing the country needs is mass gatherings.

yggdrasil Tue 12-May-20 09:26:38

English Heritage will be broadcasting it live

SirChenjin Tue 12-May-20 09:45:59

No need for 10,000 people to gather when it’s being streamed live. I don’t think that size of gathering was quite what Boris had in mind with his ‘be alert’ message (although who knows..)

MawB Tue 12-May-20 09:54:37

Well, yes, obviously.

GrammarGrandma Tue 12-May-20 10:39:05

It will be closed so no Druids will be able to get in.

4allweknow Tue 12-May-20 10:56:08

That's it then, the end is definitely nigh!

Aepgirl Tue 12-May-20 11:18:07

There’s more important things in life than going to Stonehenge for the solstice. Just watch the sunrise from your local park, garden, or balcony.
I don’t understand why the druids are allowed to get close to the stones anyway.

Missiseff Tue 12-May-20 11:46:10

So?

grandtanteJE65 Tue 12-May-20 12:36:40

Surely, all public meetings are banned for the forseeable future?

I too doubt that the solstice will take heed of the ban.

Newatthis Tue 12-May-20 13:03:42

The sun always comes up no matter what. Life goes on and let's face it, the rising sun can be seen from many places all around the world.

JaneRn Tue 12-May-20 13:35:56

So some rather strange people want to watch the sun rising and will not now be allowed to do so. Next thing they will be complaining that their human rights are being infringed.

Who cares!

Heket Tue 12-May-20 14:06:06

The same kind of people who are complaining about the restrictions stopping people gathering in Rome to listen to their Pope.

Bluecat Tue 12-May-20 14:55:36

JaneRN, I am one of those strange people. I don't go to Stonehenge but marking the solstice, and thus the turning of the seasons, is important to Pagans. I don't think it's any stranger than observing Easter, Ramadan or any other sacred occasion.

yorkie20 Tue 12-May-20 15:01:24

Bluecat......I am also one of those strange people. I dont go to Stonehenge either.
JaneRN, can you define what or who the 'strange people' are please?

Beechnut Tue 12-May-20 15:29:33

I don’t think I’m a strange person although my family call me weird....and I have been to Stonehenge for the solstice ?

May7 Tue 12-May-20 16:34:40

Each to their own comes to mind. Mark the day how you will or don’t if you don’t . The sun will always rise.

BladeAnnie Tue 12-May-20 17:13:03

Seeing the solstice at Stonehenge was on my bucket list and we did it 3 years ago. It was honestly one of the most amazing and magical things I have ever experienced smile

allule Tue 12-May-20 17:56:01

How are we all going to feel when the sun takes umbrage and refuses to rise?

JaneRn Tue 12-May-20 22:40:34

If this something you choose to do and which is important I would certainly not wish to stop you, especially if you are expressing your religious belief, I do find the whole exercise rather strange but then I would say, as an agnostic, there are rituals within other religions which I find equally strange.

“WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF YOU HADN'T SAVED HIM?
"Yes! The sun would have risen just the same, yes?"
NO
"Oh, come on. You can't expect me to believe that. It's an astronomical fact."
THE SUN WOULD NOT HAVE RISEN.
...
"Really? Then what would have happened, pray?"
A MERE BALL OF FLAMING GAS WOULD HAVE ILLUMINATED THE WORLD.”

I am a strange person who worships the Goddess by keeping a natural garden with grass allowed to flower and seed
