Are you planning to visit your holiday home?

As someone has already pointed out the message is clear, "Stay home as much as possible and no to visiting holiday homes." Common sense is not something everyone has and people interpret what is said how they want.

Boris has caused problems and possibly increased theorist of spreading of the infection. Why did he say that people can drive as far as they like as long as they are back home the same day ? This was totally unnecessary and will surely cause more accidents, breakdowns and increase crowding at popular places. Silly move.

Going to your holiday home is fine if people have a house where they do not have to come into contact with neighbours. In Bournemouth there are several blocks of flats where people have second homes. I would like to think that people will be sensible and remember that there are many retired people, often in the at risk category, who live there permanently. Sadly, the last few weeks have shown there are people who think rules do not apply to them.

We are on the Guardian Home Exchange web site - you can swap either your main home or, if you have one, your second home, with someone else. You both have a holiday in a new place this way. Now the Guardian Home Exchange is part of a scheme which is offering health care workers free holidays after this is all over (when will that be?) Lots of people are signing up to give free holidays this way - I hope it will include people working in care homes and giving care in people's own homes.

Disrespectful at the moment, to stay in an area that isn’t your home. Government guidance is not to move into second homes. If everyone did that, it would be chaos and it would be so much harder to track virus impact locally.

I'm wondering if it would be easier to say like in France people can only travel 100km from home. By putting a distance on it that stops people going out of their home area. Those from Paris with second homes on the coast certainly won't be pleased, the French live for their long summer break.

Our second home is a two hour drive and in the Lake District so no I don't think we will be visiting just yet.
We were in the process of selling it and it looks as if it may go a* up because not even the solicitor is working from his isolated office.

I know some people who live in holiday areas are not happy about second home owners as they say we have pushed up the prices of properties there to a level beyond the reach of locals.

I think that’s a valid point, but it’s not the whole story is it?

When we are there we shop locally. We eat out in the restaurants, pubs, cafes, as well as using local tradesmen for any jobs which need doing.

All of that contributes to their economy.

We are lucky enough to have 2 houses. Neither one is a holiday home. We have shared time in both. We were at our Suffolk Home when lockdown started so we stayed there. Not sure when we will go back to our Essex home. We want to abide by the rules., but we’re not sure what they are?

Must be nice for some folks, still as we rent a different one every year we get st stsy at different places and its cheaper than buying one

We have some maintenance due on our home that absolutely has to be done this summer or it'll become a much bigger/more serious job. If this was our second home that would be a major worry right now IYKWIM and I would be wanting to visit to see whether it had deteriorated to the point of needing to be done immediately or if it will hold out for a few months

woodmouse I think people are msinly wanting to visit their holiday homes for the day y'know to check on maintenance/security and to remain insured.

which is allowed. But personally I would be reluctant to do it for the reason I stated above.

You and your household can head outdoors for your physical & mental wellbeing in England.
But be respectful to local people & communities.
You must adopt social distancing at all times.
Then return to your primary home - No overnight stays, including second homes & holiday homes.

If I had one my main reason to not go right now would be fear of the reception I might get.

People might take their fear/anger/frustration out on incommers at the moment and I wouldnt want that to taint my happy place.

It'ld just be down to luck whether you happened to be the first/only out of towner they encountered that day or the 30th who they lose their temper at.
