Washing lines

Ha ha Elegran! You do wonder at some hoity toity women don’t you? ?

I always choose a washday for the drying I.e. I wouldn’t put a load on unless I could dry it in the sun/breeze on my long line. The sunlight has UV rays which kill bugs as well and white bedding is brighter.

I suspect the no Sunday washing is more a religious thing where you weren’t meant to ‘work’ on a Sunday.

My washing goes on the lines (have a whirly and a straight one) all year round and even if it's a nice drying day on Dec 25th it goes out lol.
Always used to love seeing a line of white terry nappies when the kids were small.
I don't own a dryer so have to use clothes airers if the weather takes a turn for the worse.
Most of the neighbours hang laundry out although one never does , must cost her a fortune with 5 or 6 living in the house.

Clearly, hanging out washing is work which is not essential to be done on a particular day so should not done on the Sabbath.

A neighbour told my Mum that she always knew it would be a good day if our washing was out.
Our washing was always done on a Wednesday.
(I guess if the weather was terrible, it maybe wasn't hung out and went on the kitchen pulley instead.)

Isa it common to hang your washing outside? Common can mean either "nearly everyone does it or "naice people don't do it." Hanging out underwear is apparently particularly not-naice. Maybe naice people don't wear underwear, just a fur coat?

I'm common as muck then! Infinitely preferrable to a power guzzling, clothes shrinking tumble-dryer any time

I have a clothes line from one end of garden to t'other, plus a prop made from a tree branch. I love the smell of newly dried outside washing and it's comforting to see it flapping around in the wind. Years ago the woman next door would always peg out 'smalls' on one peg so neighbour's couldn't see them, and PJ's would be pegged out in sets, but never 'his' and 'hers' together

I think if you hang washing out on Sunday you get an official visit from the Witchita Linesman! (grin)

It is wrong to hang it out on a Sunday apparently - especially in rural Scotland I discovered!

Not at all Miss foodlove we hang or my husband hangs washing out when it’s a sunny and blowy day nothing like the smell of clean laundry dried outside. Mind you I was once told never to hang washing outside on a Sunday now why was that? Superstion I think. My neighbour is very good at judging whether or not it’s going to rain and shes mostly alway right so we keep an eye on her line. We got rid of our whirlygig it’s nearly caught our neck several times over the years can’t think why we didn’t remove it before now we’ve got a lovely paved area there which houses a table and 4 chairs weve had to duck a lot to save Injurywe’ve now got a line attached to the shed and it reaches a fence on the garden perimeter. I must admit it must be hauled in if not in use or strangulation comes to mind.

I hang washing out and am happy to do so.

It is the right thing to do. Environmetally friendly. Financially friendly. Living in a flat I wish I could hang my washing out - I really miss it.

Not at all! I am fanatical about hanging out my washing and not using my dryer. I live in a very 'naice' area, and lots of my neighbours hang washing out too. I have however read on a past thread on GN that some people frown on their neighbours hanging out underwear? They need to get a life!
