Washing lines

This morning I have just pegged washing on my whirlygig.
Yesterday all our bedding was out.
Nothing like line dried laundry.

It got me thinking, neither of my mothers in law would put washing out.
One said it was common and neighbours would think they couldn’t afford a laundry!
The other was a snob and thought that you couldn’t have a swimming pool and hang washing out.

Thoughts please.... am I common to hang out my washing?

Not at all! I am fanatical about hanging out my washing and not using my dryer. I live in a very 'naice' area, and lots of my neighbours hang washing out too. I have however read on a past thread on GN that some people frown on their neighbours hanging out underwear? They need to get a life!

GabriellaG54 Fri 15-May-20 10:22:56

Yes, it is common.

It is the right thing to do. Environmetally friendly. Financially friendly. Living in a flat I wish I could hang my washing out - I really miss it.

I also dry laundry outside when possible, my wirlygig flies round like a good 'un when there's a breeze!

I hang washing out and am happy to do so.
It may or not be “common”.

Not at all Miss foodlove we hang or my husband hangs washing out when it’s a sunny and blowy day nothing like the smell of clean laundry dried outside. Mind you I was once told never to hang washing outside on a Sunday now why was that? Superstion I think. My neighbour is very good at judging whether or not it’s going to rain and shes mostly alway right so we keep an eye on her line. We got rid of our whirlygig it’s nearly caught our neck several times over the years can’t think why we didn’t remove it before now we’ve got a lovely paved area there which houses a table and 4 chairs weve had to duck a lot to save Injurywe’ve now got a line attached to the shed and it reaches a fence on the garden perimeter. I must admit it must be hauled in if not in use or strangulation comes to mind.

NotSpaghetti Fri 15-May-20 10:29:56

Ha ha - but I would never choose to use a whirligig!

NotSpaghetti Fri 15-May-20 10:31:39

It is wrong to hang it out on a Sunday apparently - especially in rural Scotland I discovered!

Elizabeth1 Fri 15-May-20 10:32:23

Sorry meant to say if not in use the line has to be hauled in

MRGUDER Fri 15-May-20 10:36:17

I think if you hang washing out on Sunday you get an official visit from the Witchita Linesman! (grin)

boheminan Fri 15-May-20 10:56:31

I have a clothes line from one end of garden to t'other, plus a prop made from a tree branch. I love the smell of newly dried outside washing and it's comforting to see it flapping around in the wind. Years ago the woman next door would always peg out 'smalls' on one peg so neighbour's couldn't see them, and PJ's would be pegged out in sets, but never 'his' and 'hers' together

henetha Fri 15-May-20 11:00:57

I'm common as muck then! Infinitely preferrable to a power guzzling, clothes shrinking tumble-dryer any time

Elegran Fri 15-May-20 11:01:23

Isa it common to hang your washing outside? Common can mean either "nearly everyone does it or "naice people don't do it." Hanging out underwear is apparently particularly not-naice. Maybe naice people don't wear underwear, just a fur coat?

Clearly, hanging out washing is work which is not essential to be done on a particular day so should not done on the Sabbath.

A neighbour told my Mum that she always knew it would be a good day if our washing was out.
Our washing was always done on a Wednesday.
(I guess if the weather was terrible, it maybe wasn't hung out and went on the kitchen pulley instead.)

jusnoneed Fri 15-May-20 11:07:35

My washing goes on the lines (have a whirly and a straight one) all year round and even if it's a nice drying day on Dec 25th it goes out lol.
Always used to love seeing a line of white terry nappies when the kids were small.
I don't own a dryer so have to use clothes airers if the weather takes a turn for the worse.
Most of the neighbours hang laundry out although one never does , must cost her a fortune with 5 or 6 living in the house.

Pantglas2 Fri 15-May-20 11:08:56

Ha ha Elegran! You do wonder at some hoity toity women don’t you? ?

I always choose a washday for the drying I.e. I wouldn’t put a load on unless I could dry it in the sun/breeze on my long line. The sunlight has UV rays which kill bugs as well and white bedding is brighter.

I suspect the no Sunday washing is more a religious thing where you weren’t meant to ‘work’ on a Sunday.

BlueSky Fri 15-May-20 11:09:36

Heard that in South America where you think washing would dry in two minutes, if they are better off they put them in the dryer! It's a status symbol apparently!

Wheniwasyourage Fri 15-May-20 11:10:39

I love hanging out washing and would hate to live somewhere where it wasn't allowed - how un-eco-friendly!

When we moved to a smaller town in rural Scotland from the city I did wonder if anyone would object to washing being hung out on a Sunday, but then I thought that if the Good Lord hadn't wanted me to hang out nappies he wouldn't have let me have children and then make it rain during the week!

EllanVannin Fri 15-May-20 11:12:04

What's nicer than fresh smelling towels and bedding dried outside ? Sunshine also gets rid of the odd stain too especially if it's table-cloths, well it helps.
I've got a whirligig but because of high fences around the garden area nobody notices. I love to see it all blowing in the breeze it gives you a great feeling of satisfaction.grin

It's something that would worry me greatly if I had nowhere to hang washing, it really would get me down. It doesn't take much to please me though.

Kate54 Fri 15-May-20 11:12:19

My late mother also thought having visible washing was beyond the pale. She had a thing about dustbins being seen, too. So naturally I made a point of showing both to the world!

EllanVannin Fri 15-May-20 11:13:00

______dead common !

EllanVannin Fri 15-May-20 11:14:16

My mum never washed on the Sabbath. Only thing she did was cook.

Kestrel Fri 15-May-20 11:17:19

It's cheaper that's all smile

midgey Fri 15-May-20 11:17:46

Last winter my husband suddenly said “I bloody love winter”! I couldn’t think what he meant ...then realise winter meant tumble dried towels. So very soft for the delicate fellow!
