Washing lines

This morning I have just pegged washing on my whirlygig.
Yesterday all our bedding was out.
Nothing like line dried laundry.

It got me thinking, neither of my mothers in law would put washing out.
One said it was common and neighbours would think they couldn’t afford a laundry!
The other was a snob and thought that you couldn’t have a swimming pool and hang washing out.

Thoughts please.... am I common to hang out my washing?

Well, I not only prefer to dry my washing out- in the back garden- but also , occasionally, air the bedding outside too. However, I do feel that others regard it as somehow common and, even though I refuse to be deterred, I don’t hang the duvet out of the upstairs window in the front any more.
In fact, I was quite shocked to realize how much I have in fact conformed to the general attitude when observing a newcomer ( east European ) hang her bedding out in the front , I couldn‘t help feeling that it was somehow inappropriate !

I haveca whirlybird but much prefer a line. I don't care if neighbours think it's common or not.,I'm not going to use a tumble dryer that's bad for the environment when I have a garden. It's not as if I have a line of underpants out 24/7. I would be more worried about noisy neighbours than a line if washing.

I just can’t believe ‘anyone’ would think this was common. I grew up believing never on Sundays for religious reasons but apart from that, if you haven’t got a tumble drier and don’t want clothes hanging about the house, what else does one do. And I love seeing it blowing in the wind.

Hanging your washing out is common?? What a ridiculous statement! Who doesn't love the smell of line dried sheets?

annep1 Sun 17-May-20 00:30:48

What on earth is common about hanging washing out??
I too like to finish towels in tumble drier. But my pants get dried inside.

I don't like hard towels either @TwiceAsNice.
I line dry till barely damp and tumble to finishsmile

I love this time of year when I can get the washing out on the line. It smells lovely and fresh when I get it in and is not so creased. Aren't we being 'green' by using our lines?
Glad to say my DDIL is also a fan of letting it all hang out! smile

TwiceAsNice Sat 16-May-20 23:26:40

I live in a flat so use an airer ( on the balcony in nice weather) to dry clothes on and bedding but I do put towels in the dryer. I like soft towels rather than hard

Isn't it just, life goes on, as much as possible?

Sawsage2 Sat 16-May-20 22:33:44

Haha, is this a joke to stop us thinking about the horrible thing?!

AnotherLiz Sat 16-May-20 21:19:21

Not at all. I rarely use our tumble dryer - even in winter I try to avoid using it unless I absolutely have to. I use the airing cupboard instead, and sometimes the conservatory. I'm thinking of the environmental impact of using a tumble dryer.
Plus, when I can hang out the washing it's got that lovely fresh air smell smile

It's only common to even worry what others think of you.

Callistemon Sat 16-May-20 20:16:18

Terribull we had a neighbour who used to hang out her washing in the rain. "Well, it gets rid of it and it will dry at some time"

Callistemon Sat 16-May-20 20:14:14

Never on a Sunday

Isn't that a film, a song?

MiniMoon Sat 16-May-20 20:11:25

I don't want to gphang out my washing.

Behind the line is an open wood store.

There is a blackbird nesting at the back of it, and I don't want to scare her away.

shirleyhick Sat 16-May-20 20:09:00

I always hang mine out I think it freshens it up.

I love hanging out my washing. It smells gorgeous when you bring it in especially bedding. If they could bottle the smell they would make a fortune. When its a fine day i actively look for washing. - Sad

HannahLoisLuke Sat 16-May-20 19:50:13

Lovely line dried washing, though never on a Sunday.
Also the pegs must be taken off and the line stashed away when finished at least that's what my mum always said.

ALANaV Sat 16-May-20 19:33:28

OOoh I LOVED hanging the washing out ...but now I live in a flat with no lines allowed ...so it all has to be tumbled ...hate it ! actually bought a holiday home just so I could wash it there and hang it out !! ...however, with lockdown, that idea has been shelved for the very foreseeable future ….look with longing at the houses with washing lines !!...having said that, my sister in law once lived in a very posh house in Cobham in Surrey ...where, although she had a lovely big garden, washing was not supposed to be put out (think she did, but surreptitiously behind the garage on a low airer …….

The original concrete linen posts are still in our garden and stretch all the way up the original concrete path. Weather permitting, washing always goes out on the line and if there's a wind the creases get blown out (not that I iron much anyway).

Following a chance remark by someone donkey's years ago about not working on the Sabbath I don't do housework or washing on Sundays so no washing on the line then. Good to have a day in the week with a definite change of routine. Cooking the Sunday dinner and maybe gardening is usually my limit - apart from a walk sometimes.

One of our neighbours where we previously lived was Spanish and she'd let her washing bake dry on the line in the summer, forgetting I imagine she was in England "three hot days and a thunderstorm" that's us! she'd leave it too long, and it was wet again sad We were good friends, but the fence was a tad too high for me to shin over it!

H1954 Sat 16-May-20 19:03:28

No, it's not common, it's traditional surely?! I always peg laundry on the line if the weather is fit to do so. We do have a dryer but it is only ever used in wet weather. The only days I never peg out are Remembrance Sunday, Christmas Day, New Years Day, or when I know there's a funeral locally.

These people that think it's beneath them to peg out the laundry really make me laugh, who do they think they are? We all make our clothes dirty, we all breath and we all fart! Get over yourselves!

TerriBull Sat 16-May-20 18:58:55

Washing should be drying outside whenever possible, no self respecting native of Naples has such hang ups about their washing being visible, gives the place character smile My husband moans about the outside looking like Widow Twankeys when I get both airers out, I care not! "Would you prefer me shrink your golf/polo shirts in the tumble drier?" comes my riposte? I try to use that as infrequently as possible.

live7 Sat 16-May-20 18:57:14

Hanging out washing is wonderful! Lovely to be outside pegging it out. I choose washing days by looking at forecast first. No longer have a tumble dryer. What an uawful waste of electricity to not dry outside when you are able to. Poor planet. I hang everything out including underwear of course. How strange not to. The only time I may not do that is if I was hanging out in a communal drying area in a block of flats possibly. Neighbours should only comment I would have thought if it's blowing over their garden.

NotAGran55 Sat 16-May-20 18:55:29

I have a line that pulls out and attaches to a tree opposite and winds back in when finished .
I like to start the drying process outside and finish in the tumble dryer . I don’t like the stiffness of line drying, the tumble dryer softens it and saves on the ironing too.
