Are you firmly attached to your handbag?

Hi all,
I am absolutely superglued to my handbag at all times, I favour a medium sized top handle bag with lots of spaces. I am currently using a David Jones rose gold coloured one with beige handles and lots of spaces. I have severe chronic pain and am in bed a lot so it stays at the side of the bed and comes with me wherever I go. Sometimes I can't sleep because of the pain and will go downstairs to get something to eat and a latte or cup of tea (I usually have a pasta satchet that you make with hot water in a cup). I also am worried about it being stolen as I live on a busy road but I keep the bottom drawer of my tallboy empty to use against potential burglars (I am a very nervous person). My mother said it is unnecessary to carry my handbag everywhere. Do you do it?

So totally agree with the ladies who don't get taken in by the Designer twaddle. Such a con. I have a couple of nice bags but someone else paid big bucks and the charity shop and I did OK.

I only use handbags on formal occasions. Usually I pop my purse in the inside pocket of my jacket and use a back-pack for anything too large to go into my pockets.

My mother kept everything she could possibly need in her handbag, but never knew where she had put it. She got so cross whenever she asked, "Has anyone seen my handbag?" and Daddy or I replied, "Yes." because what she meant, as we well knew, was, "Will you find my handbag and give me it, please?"

That's probably what put me off handbags. Also I was a teenager in the 1970s when we all laughed at the Queen carrying a handbag as if it contained the crown jewels, when I believe there was nothing in it except a hankie and a powder compact as Royalty at the time didn't carry money, but left that to the lady in waiting or the equerry.

Don’t have one now... and since Covid and not using money... I’ve transferred two bits of plastic into my phone case. Tuck a £10 note behind the phone itself and phone travels in jeans pocket... or cardi pocket ... or jacket . It’s so liberating!

My new Radley handbag hasn’t had a trip out since the second week of March. Only left the house for exercise and too meet DD and DGD for first time in a forest a few miles away. She and her family haven’t left their home other than for exercise so we were perfectly safe. DGD at 21 months walked a mile and a quarter and she was a fairly late walker.

Of course the big advantage of bags is that you can still use them with or without “lockdown weight”. [smile

I seem to collect bags but use the same one all the time...a Kipling bag. It's nice and light but has lots of pockets.
I was a bit complacent until recently when I had a close call with a potential mugger. I was on my way to buy a fridge and had £200 in my bag.
Now I make a point of wearing my walking jacket which has an inside pocket where I keep my card and money.
Now, if anyone grabs my bag, they will only get a small amount of money and a pack of tissues.

I'm a Kipling bag fan as well, I have several. Couldn't justify the cost of a designer bag though.

Not even going to comment on Nannypiano's post,

I love bags. They are, to me, the perfect blend of form and function, and I have several.

I always have one near me, and keep all kinds of personal and 'essential' items in it. I like knowing that the things inside it are easily accessible (I'm not otherwise very organised), and they give me a sense of security and privacy.

Growing up, my mother had no boundaries when it came to allowing my sister and me to have what she would have called 'secrets', and I took to putting personal items into a handbag and keeping it in sight at all times. That habit has persisted, although my husband wouldn't dream of violating my privacy (and I have no 'secrets' from him anyway.

On the rare occasions that I go out without a bag, I feel stressed, and it is almost certain that I 'need' something that has been left behind - a pen, a tissue, lip salve - whatever.

I stopped carrying a handbag when a tall black man tried to grab mine in broad daylight on a busy street. That was 20 years ago. Now what I can't carry in my pockets doesn't go with me.

I love handbags but have had no need for one since March. Flyinghandbags, it sounds as if you are in good company. After all, the Queen is never seen without hers, even when greeting people in one of her most comfortable rooms.

When I was in my 30s and 40s, I was very keen on shoes - on first name terms with the girls in Russell & Bromley at MetroCentre!! In 50s and now late 60’s the fancy shoes have given way to nice bags and colorful pashminas (I usually wear all black or all navy) as a colorful touch.

Different bags for different occasions. A lovely bright pink Kate Spade cross body is my new walking companion, but most of my handbags are quite big, so I can put purchases in rather than humping around separate carriers.

Rucksack for work.
Bumbag for wandering around markets.
Shopping bag for groceries.
No need for a handbag.....

My mother and MIL both used to take their handbags to bed, which turned out to be a hangover from WW2 when they took identity cards, ration books, etc. into the shelter.

I gave up handbags decades ago. Men can manage with pockets - and so can we.

PennyWhistle Wed 20-May-20 11:52:52

Reading this post makes me realise that my handbag has not been used since 14 March - the last time I went shopping. Since then DH has been doing the grocery shopping each week, and I only go out for an early morning walk each day, so wear a joggers bum bag with mobile phone and tissues plus door key.

Will i forget what money is for and how to handle it? I do have about 5 handbags, but only use/d the one depending on the season.

I have 2 handbags, a black leather one my husband bought me for our 3rd wedding anniversary (leather) and a beige crocheted one for summer time which I bought in Cyprus. I can recall chatting to a friend and saying I had 2 handbags, she shrieked and said "how do you cope", I asked her "why, how many handbags have you got" and she replied "78"...........

FlexibleFriend Wed 20-May-20 11:38:35

I don't use a handbag just a phone bag which is big enough to hold my phone with cards, keys, purse with coins and pen. I do keep it with me as life has taught me I need my phone on me at all times as I'm disabled, legs and right arm don't work and I've had 3 strokes. If home alone I need to be able to get help in an emergency.

EllanVannin Wed 20-May-20 11:28:49

I've never been a handbag sort of a person really. I'd probably only make use of one throughout my life. In fact I have a good leather one which is years old, though not dated, which is a neutral colour, contains more pockets than is necessary and it's contents are unknown grin. A bit like some of my drawers.

Aside of that I use a large wallet/purse for easier access to what I need and stick it in a shopper when I go shopping.
My handbag would be confusing with its many compartments. I wouldn't say no to a nifty Chanel bag though.

I can't understand using a rucksack as a handbag. Isn't it a hell of a faff to get things out of it when you need them? And don't you tend to clout people with it on public transport (if you use it, obviously. I bet none of us are right now!)?

BelindaB Wed 20-May-20 11:16:15

I am not ashamed to admit that I have never "got" the thing with handbags, especially when they come with a price tag that would pay my rent for a year!

For the past 30-odd years I have used a hikers handbag made of very tough man-made fibre with several compartments and a cross body strap. Costs very little, lasts a v-e-r-y long time and goes with everything.

Ditto shoes....

I don’t have a handbag. When I got my new iPhone I was worried about putting it in a handbag and getting that snatched ( central London had a wave of moped thieves) . So I gave up handbags. My iPhone cover has a place for cards and cash and that goes in my pocket and I’m out the door. If I’m going out all day and need a hairbrush etc I have a tiny rucksack. However I have got stuck wearing dark glasses ( prescription ) at night and having messy hair because I went out for an hour and stayed out for six seven hours ! ( not since lockdown lol)

Theoddbird Wed 20-May-20 11:02:57

Mine are all vintage Monsoon Accessorize. All rather quirky...all pre loved...bought on eBay. I put what I need in one if going somewhere...of course not done now.

Kenver60 Wed 20-May-20 10:51:34

I have a medium size David Jones dark red backpack with beige stitching and tassels on the flap , but I’m not attached to it , my most expensive handbag is an LK Bennett my DH thought I was joking when I told him it cost as much as a washing machine . My favourite and the one I’m attached to and I love Flying Handbag is an orange Radley purchased 2 years ago Reduced ..

Rosina Wed 20-May-20 10:46:09

Realised today that I have become completely disassociated with my handbags - never moved without one before the current climate, but now I go for a walk with a tissue tucked up my sleeve, and march along swinging my arms. Was even thinking today of geting rid of them all and just having a small cross body item that can sit under a jacket with a tissue, debit and credit cards, phone and key. No more back strain from huge bag hanging on the shoulder!

Gwenisgreat1 Wed 20-May-20 10:41:11

Yes my handbag normally comes with me where ever I go - until Lockdown. Now when I walk the dog I take just my phone and some tissues, no point in taking money or cards 'cause nowhere is open to spend it!
