Do You Choose Style or Comfort?

I have shoes I keep, although I doubt I shall wear them again except in front of a mirror when I try a dress on. I adored the Mary Jane style and they looked so pretty with a dress.
The reason is I just don’t feel safe and balanced wearing heels out for long now I’m in my 60’s.

Have you found that your styles has/have had to change as you became older?

Forgot to say that I also have some Hotter shoes and sandals which are great. As are Ecco.

Sparklingsilver I like your style.
My sadly departed and much missed stylish friend always looked for navy shoes. We spend many an hour in shoe shops while she tried different styles of (nearly always navy) sandals and shoes.
Blue suited her and she played to her strengths. She also wore an incredibly tiny UK size 3.

I've always worn flat shoes since meeting by husband-to-be! I'm three inches taller than him and when we married in 1975 he was the one in 'heels'- platform shoes were the fashion for men then! I wore ballet slippers.
On holiday I love my Birkies, but I once wore them to the school where I taught one summer and had to do exam invigilation. It was very hot, my feet got sweaty and every time I took a step they emitted a loud 'fart'-type noise. blush The students started to giggle, so I had to take them off and carry on with bare feet!

I’ve always loved shoes and I can’t bring myself to wear anything ugly - sorry Hotter, not a chance! I’ve now got wide feet, and a bunion on one of them, so I always try on before I buy. I like Van Dal, and Gabor, both of which have a good range of heel heights, I’m more comfortable if I wear a range over a week than the same pair all the time.

Trousers almost always to hide lumpy legs and sometimes swollen ankles. Never sleeveless tops because of saggy baggy arms. Elasticated waists for sheer comfort.
And as for FEET - have always been very wide anyway, now plus bunions, plus plantar fascitis and arthritis. Haven't worn shoes with backs in for over 20 years. Thank God for Fitflop and similar!
PS It won't surprise you to know that I'm no fashion plate but hopefully I look reasonably presentable!

rowyn you’ve listed a few challenges you have to overcome, but with a lot of experience I’m sure you’ve found your own lovely style as well being comfortable ???

I would love to have a choice! I take size 2 (wide fitting) shoes and have very little choice. I like "Pavers" although I have noticed that "Hotter" now do size 3 shoes (it used to be 4 upwards). I find I have to pay at least £40 for shoes/sandals/mules - and there is still a fairly limited choice. Sadly, I also have quite sensitive feet as I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes when 70 and have diabetic neuropathy in my feet. Comfy is about all I can tolerate in any case, though I do have one pair of fairly smart (Burgundy Patent) "Mary Janes"! Trainers and canvas shoes are usually too big for me. Finding something even smaller than a 2 is out of the question!

I wobble so much in heels! Never have been very good with them, and having broken a bone a few years back by falling onto concrete I am absolutely phobic about falling as the recovery period was so boring, inconvenient and time wasting.
So it's flat shoes for me - but I buy them in lovely colours that match my clothes, or wear silver, other metallics, or pretty floral fabric shoes in the summer. Hotter often do comfortable shoes in beautiful colours and patterns - they detract from the 'sensible' look!

I love shoes, I love brightly coloured shoes, I love flat shoes, I love boots (red, brown, black, green, blue and purple). BUT, now I am a few weeks off 80 I have swopped my stilettos for kitten heels and have no trouble with them. Have just bought a pair of emerald green kitten heel sling backs, gorgeous. I do have walking shoes for longer walks - the right shoe for the occasion.

Your new shoes sound wonderful, and I'm not even a shoe fan. smile

Comfortable feet these days although I have never worn high heels. My day to day smart shoes have always been good quality loafers/moccasin style plus a couple of pairs of shoes for special occasions but not comfortable enough for much walking. Over the last 6 or 7 months I have rotated round 3 pairs of Ecco shoes (actually a bit wide for my narrow feet) and have found that the half dozen small callouses under one foot - not at all painful or uncomfortable - have all disappeared. I'm quite proud of being over 70 with no corns on toes grin

I have always loved shoes but have never been into high heels. I have very high insteps so suit shoes with ankle straps, particularly T bar best or lace-up shoes. Slingbacks are very uncomfortable as are court shoes with no straps. I have always loved patent leather, too, possibly because l was not allowed it as a child. My daughter only takes size 2 but, in her twenties, likes Doc Martens, Vans, Converse etc which makes things much cheaper for her as she gets the children's version.

I have had a pain shooting up my big toe for a while now, I was going to make an appt with GP but then lockdown came along.
My mother had a painful bunion and looking at my foot I think this is what it might be. I'm only 5ft 2inches and miss my heels [Only for socialising] flats at home. Outfits don't look the same in flats. Feel old and miserable!

I used to love heels until I shattered my ankle which is now full if metalwork. So trainers, sandals or flat boots for me now. I’ve hung on to one pair of taxi to table or car to bar heels, but can’t remember the last time I wore them! As a teenager I wore stilettos all day every day, travelling into London and dashing out to oxford street in my lunch hour with never a thought for my feet. Surprisingly they look pretty good, the only part of my body that don’t depress me!

Broken ankles ,foot and heel put a stop to high shoes unfortunatly.
Mum wore stilettos until 80s,she only stopped after operations for hip replacement and feet problems. Her feet are shaped like the shoes.
I found shoes with a slight heel which were so comfy I got two pairs, one navy ,one black.
Got home one to find I had one of each on. Only my daughter noticed.
Sadly, after the 2nd fracture,I could not wear them, so they went (walked !) to a charity shop,

I still love nice shoes but go for comfort now.
